Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Why is the transfer rate far slower than 5Gbps as promoted?
A: The USB 3.0 transfer rate of 5Gbps, with a theoretical transfer speed of 625MB/s, is about 10 times faster than of the mainstream USB 2.0 transfer rate of 480Mb/s, which has a theoretical transfer speed of 60 MB/s. Taking current usage conditions into consideration, the transfer speed can achieve about 3 times that of USB 2.0. The actual transfer speed depends on the specific environment the product is used in.

2. The hub keeps suddenly disconnecting with the device while transferring data. Why is this happening?
A: If this problem is occurring with properly-installed devices, it is usually due to insufficient power supply. When the hub is transferring data - especially big data - make sure it is connected to a power source. In addition, we recommend connecting the hub to your computer with the cable provided. If not, please make sure the cable length is less than 1m, so as to ensure stable data transfer.B: Please gently push and pull the outer devices cable to let it better connected to the hub and shake the hub gently to see if they are connected solidly before use it to transfer data.

3. The devices are not being identified by my computer when connected to the USB hub, but they are being identified when connected directly to the computer. Why is this happening?
A: This problem may be the result of one of the following causes:
a. Insufficient power supply. Please connect the USB hub to a power source.
b. Compatibility between the motherboard and system. Please try refreshing the BIOS in the motherboard.
c. System or BIOS settings. The USB may be disabled in your BIOS or operating system. Please turn on the computer, press F2 or DEL to enter the BIOS interface, then select “Enable USB device”.
d. Incorrect insertion or unplugging. Do not unplug the device when transferring data in order to avoid damaging the chipset.
e. Improper driver installation. In “Device Manager”, go to “Other Devices” and select “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”. If there are any yellow questions or exclamation marks visible, uninstall the driver in “Device Manager”, and then restart your computer. The driver will be reinstalled automatically.

5 out of 5 eggsRealived

Pros: Was worried initially that the HUB came with a power adapter but all ports work w/o using the power adapter. The adapter is only needed for large power consumption items rated I believe above 5v such as printers and scanners.

Cons: Power Adapter scared me into almost returning the item. No need to use the adapter for low power consumption items.

Other Thoughts: Update the description for this item for have more information and details as what the power adapter will be needed for off the bat.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: I was looking for a just a little something to tide me over till my next build, which will have more (and front) USB 3.0 ports, and this little guy does the trick. Yes, the cable is shorter than I'd like, but I just had to change where I was going to mount the hub. The speeds are a vast improvement over the old 2.0 hub I had, and I've not experienced any disconnects or problems with using any device (USB 3.0 flash drives, SSD readers, webcam, etc.)

Cons: As stated by just about everyone, the cord is rather short for some people's setups, mine included. The only other gripe I really have, which is just a personal pet peeve, is the rather bad grammar in the user manual. You can tell it's a (rather bad) translation job, but it does have all the information you need.

5 out of 5 eggsupdate on return

Pros: Excellent service from hootoo!
I returned it and right away they sent me a refund and even wrote me a check for the return shipping cost.
Would've been nice if it actually worked tho because as I said before the design and size is awesome compared to other products out there....I will try it again if they come up with one that isn't so hard to install.

Cons: Hub didn't work properly

1 out of 5 eggsdefective unit-great seller

Pros: Looks nice and is constructed to last.

Cons: Unit was defective and would only work one time after rebooting with it connected. Plugging in a new item and nothing is recognized including the original item. Once it was unmounted it was not recognized without a reboot.

Other Thoughts: Once the seller was notified, they agreed the unit was defective and quickly refunded my purchase price. They didn't even make me jump through hoops and return an item that the only good part was the short cable.
Great seller and would definitely not hesitate to purchase from them if they have anything I needed.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It seems to work well. Read speeds from my 1TB WD Passport are ~86 MB/s. with USB2 I get ~30. I have not checked write speed since I don't have a blank drive to test it on. This is in line with most reports (USB3 ~ 3x USB2). I am satisfied.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: I run 2 x 1TB 2.5" external USB3 drives during backups and no problems with power.
I would buy this again.

2 out of 5 eggsdefective

Pros: not sure...since it didn't work. I finally got my comp to recognize hub but once I put my computer to sleep mode..it no longer recognized it. It was hard enough to get it to work...and to have it do that again just to figure out it was defective was just making me irritated.
And all those people who had trouble using it...I'm thinking it really shouldn't require this much work or effort to use it but that's just my opinion. If it worked I would've probably loved it. The size and weight was nice. Design is better than most hubs out there.

Cons: Cable short.
Defective.
I read all the good comments and was excited to try it.
Oh wells...did spend $9.50 to return it with UPS. I really didn't want to drive and wait 30 minutes in line to save a few bucks.

5 out of 5 eggsUSB3 Hub: Great

Pros: I have been running it now for over several weeks 24/7 with a USB3 Hard Drive, and a USB3 Rosewill 6XBluRay. No disconnects, works great, (& nice blue LED logo). I am using the provided external power adapter and no problems powering the two devices. Running Win7

Cons: none so far.

5 out of 5 eggsMac OSX Retina - all good now

Pros: Customer service! Initially I had problems with my HooToo USB3 hub and my Macbook Pro Retina running OSX 10.8.3. Hangs, inability to see the attached disk, etc. There are some application notes in the attached literature discussing possible issues with Mac OSX, but none of these applied. I contacted HooToo tech support via email and supplied them the information they wanted (system info, etc.). They felt that I must have had a defective hub. They sent me a new one without having to return the old one, which was very convenient! I tested the new hub extensively - powered, unpowered, boot, sleep, etc.) for about 3 hours. All good! A few notes to observe when using this with your Mac:

The hub MUST be connected at boot time, otherwise the Apple Macbook Pro is not sure what to do with it – it will not see the attached drive.

When the system powers down, IF the hub power connector is attached, the drive will not shutdown. I suspect this is because it still sees power from the powered hub, and is doing what it thinks is correct. I also suspect that Mac OSX is not sending a 'drive shutdown' command to the drive before shutting down completely. The drive does shutdown properly during sleep mode. The drive also shuts down properly when Mac OSX tells it to (every 10 minutes or so). I have not waited long enough to see if the internal drive firmware will eventually shut it down after minutes of inactivity. I realize that you cannot shutdown power to the ports while the system is off because some other device (iPhone?) may be using the ports to charge.

It WOULD be a nice option to choose whether to leave the hub on or off when the system is turned off – I don't know if this is realistic.

I find that the best solution is:

- Boot with the hub attached
- Don't use the power adapter unless you must. This way, when the Macbook shuts down power to its USB port, the hub also loses power and the drive shuts down.

The above is not possible if there is a device on the hub that requires power at all times, like an iPhone.

Oh - FWIW - I did a drive speed test to my Seagate Backup+ Desk 4TB - the drive was just as fast with the hub as without it.

Cons: The first hub was apparently bad, but as discussed, HooToo tech support made everything work out fine.
