5 out of 5 eggsgreat chager, but huge

Pros: this charges C and D batteries

Cons: Its pretty large and deep in order to charge C and D batteries - much larger and deeper than the AA/AAA version of the same charger - hard to tell from the picture

5 out of 5 eggsthe ultimate nimh charger

Pros: purchased 2010, still runs perfectly and has actually revived several seemingly dead cells.

Cons: initially expensive.

Other Thoughts: yes, it is among the most expensive chargers money can buy but you do get what you pay for. this is a very high quality piece of gear.
i only wish the powerex batteries were as good as this charger.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat tool

Pros: Does what you'd expect, & I really like the recondition mode

Cons: A bit bulky - finding a place to keep it is tough. The LCD display is sometimes hard to see...

Other Thoughts: Very happy I bought this.

4 out of 5 eggsone cautionary note, use a UPS

Pros: It's never changed since it first came out -- no models, no versions -- I emailed Maha to ask and they confirmed it. So no matter how old yours is, it's the same model being sold now.

Cons: One caution, found on a blog commenting about this charger:

> ... to guarantee that your Maha C808M
> is charging at the gentler, "soft" setting you'll
> have to take the extraordinary step of
> running it through a UPS....
> ... even the briefest half second dip in power
> ... goes directly into ... default 'hard charge' setting
> no matter how you programmed it to charge your cells.

Other Thoughts: That's not a fatal flaw but it's a caution, if you're trying not to overheat particular cells. I don't know if the charger has a visible indication whether it's in 'soft' or fast charge mode, so you'd know if it had switched due to a brief power flicker.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING CHARGER!

Pros: This Charger has been Amazing so far! I have charged/reconditioned a lot of Batteries in this charger (dozens) including NIMH Rayovac, Rayovac Hybrid, Energizer, envelop & Powerex Imedion Batteries. Out of all the NIMH Rechargeable Batteries that I have had for years, only 2 of them (Rayovac AAA 15 min NIMH) wouldn't recondition, so not a big deal at all.

Cons: Not sure a Con, but weird - I have had a couple brand new AAA eneloop batteries on the very 1st soft charge that didn't register "DONE" on the charger & appeared to show Charging for many hours (overnight). Resolved this by a Soft Charge Re-Do on just those two Batteries - Not a Big Deal, but strange the way the Charger acted on those 2 Brand New Batteries...Charger does NOT charge 9.0V Batteries & it would be nice if it did - Maybe in their next Model...HINT HINT!

Other Thoughts: I wish that the good C & D NIMH Batteries were not so darn expensive, but I like having a charger that can charge those as well because I like having that option with this charger.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Massive 8-bay, I can now charge all my batteries for speedlite flash pack at once. Condition them every now and again. Then flip them over to the analyzer when I have time.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsPOWEREX MH-C808M CHARGER

Pros: This is my second charger of this model. I am still using the one I purchased back in June 2006. This unit appears to work just as well as my first purchase. Charge 8 batteries of any size at the same time. Can charge both NICD and NiMH batteries. Soft charging and conditioning feature. I always use the soft charge feature especially if you intend on getting the maximum number of charges out of each cell. A slow charge is always the best method of charging batteries.

Cons: Does not charge 9V batteries. However, I purchased a Tenergy TN137 Smart 9V charger which can charge 10 NIMH batteries at one time in less than 5 hours.

Other Thoughts: This charger has charged all of my NiMH batteries. If you insert a NiMH battery that does indicate on the LCD, leave it in for at least 1 hour and it will start to charge. I tested those batteries not shown on the LCD and they have less than or equal to .001 volts. I have Tenergy NiMH batteries that I purchased 5 years ago I am still using and I have not had to throw away the first battery.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth the investment

Pros: AAA, AA, C, D charging capability. Will charge older NiCD's if needed. Buy NiMH batteries made in Japan for best results (like Maha Powerex/Imedion). Fast, Slow, and Conditioning charge versatility a bonus.

Eight slots is perfect! Allows me to keep all my batteries fresh and fully charged.

Cons: No 9V capability. Made in Taiwan (not a big deal - Maha batteries are the quality Japanese cells and that is most important to me).

Other Thoughts: If you are going rechargeable, do it right. Buy a quality charger like this unit and quality NiMH rechargeable batteries made in Japan (not China or Taiwan).

Also, READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS! You DO NOT just load this charger with batteries and plug it in.

For high use items that will be charged frequently (like a GameBoy) use Maha Powerex batteries. For your remotes or batteries that may not be used for months buy Maha Imedion batteries. Maha chargers work great with both.

Don't let the price scare you off. Buy a cheap charger and batteries and you are not going to get optimal results. There really aren't that many options for quality rechargeable batteries. A Maha charger and Maha NiMH batteries are a combo that's tough to beat.

4 out of 5 eggsi like

Pros: It functions very well, it feels well constructed, it's versatile in types of batteries and it's very fast to charge. Soft charging is a plus. 8 charging slots seem like overkill untill you convert your household from regular batteries to rechargeables... then it just makes sense. I like the LCD that tells me a little the charge status and remaining charge, as well as the charge mode, and some other nuggets.

Cons: Pretty huge charger. I haven't seen a bigger charger.. but then again this is designed to handle D cells.
Sometimes it won't charge over depleted batteries and you need a dumb charger to bring the voltage up to a level this charger will recognize.
No 9v charging capability... I'm forced to use some other dinosaur charger for 9v's.
Power connector end seems like it might be moderately easy to bend or damage. Its design is similar to a ps/2 port on a mouse or keyboard.

Other Thoughts: If they upgraded the power connector to something more sturdy, offered a 4 cell charger version and made a way for the charger to manually charge the extremely depleted cells just high enough to automatically charge the rest of the way, I would give this item all 5 eggs... but these things make me feel like it is worth a 1 egg deduction.
