5 out of 5 eggsStunningly Sharp

Pros: This lens is probably the pinnacle of superwide to "normal" zooms (which most DX shooter tend to find the most versatile range) ever made for the Nikon F-mount. Nice and fast fixed 2.8 aperture, and the crispness of the images it yields is stunning. In this regard, this lens utterly thrashes the Nikkor 18-70, 18-55, and 18-200. I have used all of these and the image quality of this lens is noticeably better, especially over the miserable but cheap Nikkor 18-55 and the mediocre but insanely versatile 18-200. The build quality is also exceptional, it is as rugged as you could expect a lens to be with very smooth movement, all-metal construction and excellent weather seals.

Cons: Extremely expensive. Very heavy and very large, especially with the lens hood attached-- literally twice the size of the Nikkor 18-70 and the Sigma 18-50. The lens hood just clips the corner of the frame at 17mm, which I'm at a loss to understand how Nikon let slip by one of their marquee DX lenses. But obviously this is a con to the hood, not the lens.

Other Thoughts: If image quality trumps equipment cost every time, either because you're a pro or because you're an aficionado with lots of cash, this is the zoom superwide to normal for you. Paired with a 70-200, the 55-70mm range is seldom missed and you have exceptional and fast glass for about every situation short of ultrawide. If cost is an object to you, take a hard look at the Nikkor 18-70 (and its successor, the 16-85) and the Sigma 18-50. For nearly three times the cost and a lot more bulk, even for professionals it is not necessarily an obvious choice, especially given that a good iteration of the Sigma is not very far off from the optical benchmark set by this exceptional lens.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply amazing glass

Pros: Stunning image quality
finest construction of any modern lens
super fast AF-S focus motor
fast f/2.8 aperature
extremely useful zoom range
Did I mention the amazing image quality?

Cons: Price (as with others of this quality) is high
perhaps a bit too heavy for some

Other Thoughts: It hurts to pay the high price, but once you see the images it produces, you quickly forget the price. The zoom range is nearly perfect for DX format cameras. This is serious professional glass and it feels like it. It is big and slightly heavy, but that makes it more steady than a light lens. A friend who is pretty small felt it was too heavy for her, but she loved the images. the weight was no big deal for me, but it is worth mentioning. In a world of plastic lenses, a big metal body with big glass is a completely different animal. As you expect with Nikon pro glass, it is weather sealed, including a gasket at the mounting flange. The silent wave (AF-S) motor is really quick and quiet.

But I was not prepared for the amazing images this lens delivers. There is a 3D-like quality to this lens that makes for stunning photographs. And that is what makes this one of the finest lenses ever made, and a Nikon legend.
If you shoot DX, this lens is simply the best.
