4 out of 5 eggsGreat capacity

Pros: It was cheaper than anything else I could find at the time of purchase.

Cons: It says 5TB but you actually get about 4.5TB

Other Thoughts: I de-shelled this the moment it arrived and used it as a secondary storage drive.

If you're thinking of doing the same, then you should know that you've got to format it after removing the casing. Otherwise it will only show 500GB of storage.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty Power Supply

Pros: Cheap, Lots of storage

Cons: The power supply on it whines when the computer is off. Possible faulty capacitors. It sounded like it will die when I was using it.

Other Thoughts: Do not recommend

2 out of 5 eggsVery Slow Writes

Pros: Great price. 5TB is a lot of space.

Cons: Main con is SLOW WRITEs. I have 4 of these I got early yesterday for backing up data to copy into new raid array. All 4 are copying on 2 servers at the same time. They all started off with about 60MB/s each. but as time went on they all dropped to 30MB/S and transfering to fill them up is going to take about 48 hours to write 5TB. Way too slow.

Other Thoughts: Meh. I only needed them to backup info then write it back to new raid array. However the slow write speed on USB 3 is a major negative towards these guys. Added an extra day to my project.

1 out of 5 eggsFlawed, Slows to a crawl after copying for a little while.

Pros: Cheap, lots of space, USB 3

Cons: I returned the first one, this second one is still doing the same thing. I use this and others of the same model line (I have 3 of the 4TB versions) to offload completed projects. I'm a video editor. I'm trying to offload 3.4TB of media and set it copy last night. I watched it for about 20 minutes and it was copying at a good 130MB/sec average but when I got up it was down to around 30-40MB/sec. The first drive I had did the same thing. The other 4TB drives I have will copy all day long at 130MB/s

Other Thoughts: Something definitely wrong with this specific model (5TB).

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the money

Pros: Worked Wonderfully for a whole 19 days, and at a pretty good price for the memory size.

Cons: On day 20 after the Hard Drive's arrival it stopped working.

Other Thoughts: If you intend to purchase a STBV5000100 and it absolutely, positively needs to be this specific hard drive, for your wallet's sake purchase the drive from a seller that you already know and trust. 20 days after the merchandise arrived at my home, it stopped working. There was no stress to the drive or it's capacity, and for that almost 3 weeks, the data transfer rate was superb. Now it is a paperweight.

The seller was contacted and never replied. After weeks of waiting just to find out that I was to be left out in the rain, so to speak, my only option was to buy another hard drive of a smaller capacity - couldn't afford another 5 Tb after paying the retailer's price on a brick, especially with no communication or refund available. If you intend to purchase this drive, the only thing I can say is "Good Luck :)"

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 5TB of storage may seem like a lot of storage for some, but if you have that availability, you will use it at some point. This drive operates seamlessly under normal usage. The drive arrived pre-formatted for Windows File Systems (NTFS Partition), however that can be adjusted easily through any partition manager. The external has moderate airflow and dissipates heat accordingly. The USB 3.0 connectivity provides consistent read and write speeds, averaging between 85-95 Mb/s when transferring large files. There is USB 2.0 backwards compatibility, which is good for users without USB 3.0 connectivity.

Cons: Depending on how your computer or recording medium is set up, this drive will not go into stand-by mode. The platters will continue to spin, even when not in use. I suggest you power down and unplug this external when not in use.

Other Thoughts: I still question the lifespan of Seagate products. Under moderate to heavy usage, many drives have failed, and I'm hoping this drive does not meet the same fate during the same duration.

4 out of 5 eggsNo issues at all.

Pros: - Tons of space for videos and other media.
- Very quiet. Unnoticeable in a HTPC environment.
- No stuttering during playback of Blu-Ray quality videos.

Cons: - Feels a bit fragile. Build quality could be better.

Other Thoughts: - I am using this to store videos for watching on my Home Theatre PC.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive

Pros: Great $/TB ratio, relatively fast, tons of room.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these. One for my Xbox One, and one for my PC AND Xbox One (media storage). Really don't know what people are talking about saying these drives still spin when the PC is off...that is FALSE! I thought the same thing until I noticed when I turned my PC off, the light on the drive went out too, so I put my hand on the case and the drive wasn't spinning. Seagate must have put some kind of "smart" power switch on the inside.

The one attached to my Xbox did stay on, because I had it in Instant On mode. I changed it to Energy Saving mode, and now the drive powers off when the Xbox does.

Lots of storage on both devices. Plan on buying a hub and a few more of these drives.
