5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: 5tb storage, worked right out of the box, no drivers to install, small size , no annoying bright lights. I have other external hard drives that have a really bright annoying light that flashes when it is accessing the drive, this one does too, but it is not bright at all, very fast drive

Cons: 1 year warranty? why only 1 year?

Other Thoughts: for $150 for 5 TB, this is a great drive for anyone that needs tons of storage, I replaced 3 1tb and a 750GB drive for this Seagate and it works well, no problems with having usb hubs that do not have enough power, 5TB? more than enough for me

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing amount of storage

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: 5TB Amazing
@$160 - $32/TB
Works fine on XP
Made to lie flat but can be put on side

Cons: Some older programs cannot read and/or write to this drive, but this is not a drive problem.

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these in a deal and have only connected one so far, but it works fine (quiet, does not run hot, connects easily like all USB). Reading some of the other reviews, maybe I should try the other one, just to make sure it works okay.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: Inexpensive 5TB drive.

USB 3.0

Cons: 1-year warranty as usual.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for the 3.5 hard drive for my server. It was easy to remove the drive and reinstall an old 500GB for backup purposes.

It is the same as the internal 5TB drive and same warranty, but a lot cheaper. I've been buying most of my home server/HTPC drives from external USB hard drives. They always seem to be cheaper and the same hard drive as internals.

I've done this with 5 different drives over the years and no failures of any yet.

3 out of 5 eggs1 Year Warranty - Really?

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: Large capacity

Cons: One-year warranty really shows a serious lack of confidence by the manufacturer.

Doesn't have a fan or any sort of flow-through ventilation, just some holes in one end of the case. Maybe that has something to do with why Seagate provides such a short warranty?

Other Thoughts: We've had several very reliable Seagate hard drives over the years, but their warranties have become shorter and shorter. If the maker has so little confidence in the long term reliability of this drive then why should we trust it with a ton of data?

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't play well with OSX Time Machine

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: Obviously, the capacity on this device is very good. I bought my copy at a discount so the price per TB was super.

Cons: Refuses to consistenly sync with Time Machine on OSX Mavericks.

Other Thoughts: I originally installed this as a Time Machine drive for my MacBook running OSX Mavericks. Sadly, I find that after a few hours, the Time Machine software throws an error, stating that the "drive cannot be found". This is peculiar because the drive is clearly visible and accessible in the Finder. I've tried erasing the drive, repairing it, even partitioning it (in case the drive size was the issue) and still get the same error. Research online shows that there is no firmware update needed on this drive, so I'm assuming this is a compatibility matter between the drive and the Time Machine software, so beware.

2 out of 5 eggsNice drive but warranty period is troubling

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: I setup the drive and installed it, did a backup to it, and all seemed good. A drive like this is targeted as big dumb storage. My experience is that it does that fairly well. I did hook it up to a USB 3 port and try copy 145GB of media files (video, music, total ~6K files), it did work and all appeared intact after the copy but I missed catching the finishing time. As far as a big dumb drive it was about as painless to install as you could hope for. For me, and I believe most real world users, reasonable speed is sufficient for archival purposes, and this meets that benchmark.

Cons: The advert on Newegg says 2 year warranty, the box says 1 year. One year is not sufficient on something that people will tend to use for an archives drive. If it’s just to do a onetime transfer of data and you have the data on another machine, maybe no problems? Not to be comical but with the size of a 5TB and a very short warranty, if you started writing today you might fill it up around the time the warranty expires.

I had a problem with the shape of the brick power supply which was fat enough to make the plugs on both sides of it on the power strip unusable. As I currently work as a engineer for mass produced consumer products, I know every penny is sensitive in how it’s spent, but design choices like this always are an indicator as the general lack of thought given to the consumer experience – there are solutions that cost more, but are not prohibitive in products which retail in this price range.

Other Thoughts: I used to work for a few different storage companies and an SSD manufacturer as a FW engineer so I have some background in drive testing. I could go exhaustively through tests running benchmarks, but what I know was always the most important parameter was how long would a drive survive. There isn’t an application or a customer I can think of where it was okay if the drive died frequently. Unless your application isn’t sensitive to having the drive die quickly I would advise against this purchase.

Stating the obvious, warranties are timed to not cost the manufacturer much money, which means that they are timed to expire before statistically significant numbers of the product start failing in large enough numbers to cost the manufacturer their profits. So a five year warranty means the manufacturer is pretty confident in their product, a manufacturer who gives a one year warranty probably hopes it will sit on your shelf for a few months before you go to use it.

For me personally, the cost of the drive while not incidental is far less important than the value I place on my data and my time to gather, sort, categorize, etc. I can’t recommend this product only for that reason and give two eggs.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: Massive amount of storage.

Plug and play.

Reasonably fast for an external drive. I copied a 1 GB file from my internal drive in under 30 seconds.

Went through a HD Tune Pro stress test without a scratch. Seems pretty reliable, although I am somewhat worried about long term reliability.

Cons: The drive is rather noisy. There is a persistent low-level whine and occasional clicks. This happens even if the device is unmounted.

The drive does not sleep when unmounted. For that matter, the device does not seem to sleep at all. This will reduce the life expectancy of the drive in the long term.

No software is provided, other than the set up software.

Massive amount of storage. This is the drive's single greatest weakness. This drive will fail in time. 5TB in a RAID array makes sense. In a single drive, not so much.

While I have not tried this yet, all prior indications show that this drive does not work reliably outside of its enclosure. This is more than a little odd as it is nothing more than a 5TB SATA internal drive with an SATA to USB conversion board attached.

Other Thoughts: It is tempting to use such a large drive to its full potential and fill it up. This is a recipe for disaster, especially if the drive is used as a back up. If/when it fails, you've just lost 5 TB of data. In this age of downloadable digital content, with nearly everyone capturing their lives in pictures and video, we can no longer assume that 5TB is too much.

1 out of 5 eggsGood Idea But...

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: This is a massive amount of external storage that moves data at USB 3.0 speed.

Cons: Over several weeks this drive irregularly disappeared from my system.

On bad days this drive locked up my systems.

Sometimes unplugging this drive would fix the problem, sometimes it took a cold boot.

Occasionally I would get a message that the drive needed to be formatted.

Other Thoughts: I tested this drive on both Win8 and Win8 systems-same bad result.

I reformatted several times, using Windows and Seatools, with no lasting good results.

When I think about making backups of my data, which is how this drive would be used by most, I want dependability. So it would be illogical to use or recommend this drive, based on my experience.

4 out of 5 eggsBeefy

This review is from: Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV5000100

Pros: Obviously the drive capacity is massive. The drive is so large you almost have to buy two just for redundancy's sake... How else would you back up 5 TB (actually 4.5 TB after formatting). In addition to being very large, the drive is reasonably fast. Read speed benchmarks at an average of 150.1 MB/s, write benchmarks average 142.8 MB/s. Not blazing, but adequate. The drive includes a 4 ft USB 3 cable and a generic power supply that fits securely into the ordinary black casing.

Cons: I wasn't kidding about buying two, it's a lot of data to put in one place, so don't over-rely on this thing. Its weaksauce one-year warranty isn't confidence inspiring either. As a nitpick, some rubber feet on the side would have been nice to make the drive able to stand vertically.

Other Thoughts: As you may notice from other reviews, the drive is not easy to use as an internal disk. You're paying for a product specifically marketed as an external hard drive, so I don't hold that against it. Nevertheless, it's good to be aware of it in case you had such plans. Don't be cheap. If you need a large internal drive, get one. Also, remember to hit "Convert to GPT disk" in Disk Management if you need to reformat.

This would be a great drive to serve as a backup location for multiple volumes on a single PC. It reads and writes within acceptable limits, doesn't make annoying sounds and remembers all the things. Tested on an ASRock based PC running Windows 7 Pro, benchmarked with HDTune 5.5 Pro.
