5 out of 5 eggs"The Kind"

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V577 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: I am completely satisfied with this purchase. This device set up quickly and sounds great. The quality of sound is awesome and the number of features are probably more than the average user will ever need.

Cons: So far there are no cons. This device meets my expectations completely. Time will tell.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V577 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: The best parts I've found with this receiver are the six HDMI inputs, 4K and 3D* 1080p pass-through, YPAO sound field optimizer, and the two subwoofer pre-outs. Optimizing the sound with YPAO made a pretty noticeable difference, appropriating the sound in terms of distance, sound, and scalability depending on speaker placement and frequency response. When I purchased this unit, it also included a free Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 set, minus the subwoofer. The speakers lack in the lower midrange and bass, so a subwoofer was required to get the full dynamic range.

Cons: -The HDMI ports on this unit are HDMI1.4, not HDMI 2.0,, so 4K and 3D playback are mutually exclusive. The 4K functionality also only supports up to 30Hz. No additional video processing (no upscaling to 4K)

-no pre-outs for other channels, so adding additional amplifiers for more demanding speakers in the future is a no-go

-DSP functionality (Dolby ProLogic,DTS HD, etc.) is unsupported beyond 24 bit 96kHz, only the PCM signal will be heard

-OSD is only supported through HDMI on screens whose native resolution is a standardized television resolution, i.e. 1080p, 720p, etc. 1440x900 did not work for me

-Price. When I bought this for myself, it was an even $500 + Definitive ProCinema 600 5-pack. If this review were based solely on the receiver, then the price would be a huge con. For $50-70 more, you can find receivers that support 7.2 and only 4HDMI inputs, but they will support 4K@60Hz. Other receivers in this price range may also include Dolby ProLogic IIz, which adds support for height speakers.

Other Thoughts: Despite all the cons, this receiver fills my current needs and then some; it just is not as heavily future-proofed as well as some other receivers in the same price range. I use this receiver primarily to playback PCM audio from my computer, so audio quality was my main concern. The 4K@30Hz should not be a big problem, considering the price of the other equipment needed to run 4K games is still out of my price bracket, and 1080p3D on a plasma screen looks well enough to me.
