2 out of 5 eggsNOT THAT GREAT

Pros: none prob the worst of the worst .works like junk with my 80 inch sharp flat tv , cant get netflix to play sound though this box of junk.

Cons: too dam big , doesnt fit nice anywhere.cant play surround sound all the time , sounds like trash compared to my old unit which was cheaper and played all the time , tech support like most has people who dont know a thing and speak little english .

Other Thoughts: waste of money .

5 out of 5 eggsawesome receiver.

Pros: ease of use, connectivity with other devices, integration with other sony products.

Cons: can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: I used to be a jvc electronics guy until they stopped making home component receivers. switched to sony and have not regretted the decision. This receiver puts the icing on the cake. i have an iphone connected through bluetooth and it works like a champ. I am able to access my mp3 library on my home network through the wifi without any problems. I have an all sony setup and the ease of use is awesome. I have read many negative reviews on this receiver, but honestly, most issues related to a lack of IT and computer knowledge. this receiver flat out and by far exceeds all of my expectations.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid successor to the STR-DN1040

Pros: The STR-DN1050 is a solid successor to the previous model (STR-DN1040), but the changes are mostly evolutionary. It offers reasonable, clean power output for its class, with a multitude of sound field options, producing an excellent and accurate natural tonal sound quality overall. Sony added an on-screen volume display, customizable preset options for each input. This unit also supports numerous external/mobile source connections including WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplay, MHL, and can be controlled with a smartphone running Sony's TV Sideview app. The on-screen menus are nice, and the unit itself is visually appealing. There really is no better AVR in this price range. Below are the simultaneous bench output numbers into 8 ohm loads according to S&V:

Channels Driven / THD / Power
2 0.1% 103.8w
2 1.0% 129.9w
5 0.1% 69.0w
5 1.0% 86.2w
7 0.1% 68.1w
7 1.0% 77.1w

Cons: There are still no pre-outs for primary zone audio channels to combine with an external amplifier (which I'd prefer over Zone 2 outputs), and the total power output is basically unchanged from the STR-DN1040. Sony cut the number of HDMI inputs and (like many A/V manufacturers) may be playing loose with the HDMI 2.0 specs, as I'm not certain that this AVR will ever support all of the upcoming HDMI 2.0 features.

Other Thoughts: My modest home theater setup:

Sony Bravia KDL-60W610B 60" LED-LCD HDTV
Sony PS3 (excellent for DVD/BluRay playback)
Sony STR-DN1050 AVR
Polk New Monitor speakers (awesome budget speakers when on sale):

2x 75T front L/R main channels
1x 25C center channel
2x 65T rear L/R channels
2x 45B surround L/R channels
