1 out of 5 eggsaddendum to my previous review

Pros: same as previous - egg downgrade is for no response from support

Cons: additional cons: the USB3 interface fails repeatedly under any duress at all- IE: multiple streams or simultaneous playback/copy or just about any file manipulation at all...
the thing just disconnects from the system requiring a power reset

Other Thoughts: continued letters to SEDNA support remain unanswered sent two more notes in January and February - not even a form letter response to my emails -- recommend staying far away from this company - hope Newegg will respond to this as well...

2 out of 5 eggsdicey

Pros: same as previous reveiew

Cons: horrible software, non existent support on the site -
bad performance when doing any multi-tasking

Other Thoughts: the software fails on load even after quite a bit of massaging - I would have returned this but the enclosure is quite nice and i currently just hang it off my main system as a backup -

2 out of 5 eggsWorks, not user friendly

Pros: Physical design is great. Drive cover is magnetic and simply pulls off. This is a true plus for me since I plan on rotating drives often.

Drives slide in and snap in place, no tools, clips, or even plastic locks. The drives are plenty secure without.

Web GUI is simple and straight forward.

Once you can figure out setup (see Cons), it seems like it's going to work well for my purposes and I hope it will be mostly hands-off here out.

Cons: I'm a network admin, and wouldn't recommend this item for anyone that doesn't have a serious tech background. Here's why:

The user manual comes only on CD. That's understandable, probably not an issue for most people but a problem for me since my only PC (the one from which I'm setting up this NAS) has no CD drive. Speaks to the company's professionalism.
Just download it online you say? Nope. It's not out there. Would have to take the CD to work and email it to myself. Haven't got to that yet. The Quick Installation Guide is JUST helpful enough if you wrap in online research.

BUG: the device won't hold a static IP address. Instead I head to set a DHCP reservation in my home router. Would have tried upgrading the firmware, but can't seem to find any downloads online.

The company's website has a support page but the only working links on the page are RMA Requests and Contact Us. No Driver/Application/BIOS Downloads (none work), no FAQ (doesn't work).

Now, about drive configuration. This device has two bays and touts RAID 0, 1, or JBOD. My preference (and would not have purchased anything without it) is JBOD. In the Web GUI the only available drive function is format (with exFAT, not NTFS, by the way). There it NO choice to choose your RAID (or not) preference.

More about drive usage: When I unboxed, added two drives, and powered up, and got past the fact that I couldn't choose drive config, I formatted the drives and tested use. Seems good. But it must be configured in RAID 1 (mirroring) because I only see half the total storage available after formatting. So I play around with it a bit to check out rebuild times and functionality. Pull a drive and see what happens. Well, let me get to the point: When two drives are present it seems to be using only one of them. Not in a RAID configuration. Only JBOD appraently.

Lastly, user connectivity. Perhaps this is a fault of Windows 8, but it affects NAS functionality: when connecting via SAMBA the drive requests user authentication. In a home network Windows sends the PC/Workgroup name as domain with username (domain\username). The NAS of course does not recognize this. Not sure how or why it eventually worked, but it is. It's possible I'm off base as to why I had problems connecting.

FTP: Using FileZilla the connection was immediately dropped by NAS. After adjustments it required Active Transfer Mode rather than the default setting, Default Transfer Mode. Frustrating. FTP via Windows Command Prompt didn't function either.

Other Thoughts: Overall, as I said to open the Con section: I wouldn't recommend for a non-tech-industry user. Not sure I'd recommend for them.

IMPORTANT Full Disclosure: I still haven't installed the utility that comes on the CD. This (one would hope) might have relieved some of my setup frustrations. Probably wouldn't fix the functionality issues though.
