3 out of 5 eggsreally good, but...

Pros: very easy to install, easy interface. fast, stable**.

Cons: Takes too long to initialize (up to a minute and a half)
very bright LEDs
Requires a firmware upgrade. people who initially get this router will be frustrated by its instability. it is only until you upgrade the firmware that it works perfectly. novice users will probably no think of this, and it can only be done by manually downloading the firmware file. Lost an egg because of this.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry to hear about the initial problems are are glad to hear that the firmware update helped. If you need any other assistance please contact our support team at

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: I always have great connection speeds with this router. I am about 50 ft from this router at all times and have never had a connection issue that originated from this router. I have only reset it one time over the course of 6 months.

Cons: n/a

1 out of 5 eggsBroke after 4 months

Pros: - fast speeds while working
- easy setup
-dual band router

Cons: -connections speed decayed over time
-5 MhZ channel fails often (dropped connection, dropped internet connection)
-WAN connection interrupts several times a day
- no new firmware for quite a while

Manufacturer Response:

Hi mgymnop,

- Do these issues start after 4 months of the router usage, or right out of the box?
- When the wireless performance degrades or the connection drops, do you happen to use any other wireless equipments such as micorwave, cordless phone, blue tooth ...etc.?
- When the WAN connection drops, what's the color of the Internet LED on the WNDR4300?

You can contact us at; please include a link to this review and any case numbers from our support team (if you have them).

1 out of 5 eggs5 GHz broke after a month

Pros: Dual band, price, DD-WRT support

Cons: I changed software to DD-WRT supported software (I was using 2 x 2.4 GHz, one for my Domain Controller with Windows RADIUS and second 2.4 GHz with RADIUS for "regular" users, 5GHz only for RADIUS users). Everything worked pretty well for a month, I was using 5GHz mostly for mobile devices.

2 Days ago, 5GHz just stopped working. LED is off, I tried changing everything on 5GHz, rebooting it and even doing factory reload, and at the end, 5GHz is just dead.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Mile Lj,

Have you tried upgrading or switching to a different version of DD-WRT? We are happy to look into this issue, but we cannot provide official support for DD-WRT, as it may be the cause of the issue. You may want to also try restoring to stock firmware to see if the 5 GHz issue persists. If it continues to happen in that case, we can investigate and get you a warranty replacement if needed.

2 out of 5 eggsKnown problems that they will not fix

Pros: When it works the features are nice. good signal strength.

Cons: Where do I start. The wps feature on this router will start up when the router is rebooted or powered on after initial setup. The problem is, that when the wps feature is running, it stops the radio functions of the router. There is no way to keep this from happening. In short, if you need to reboot etc for any reason, (which you will). your router will be useless for Wi-Fi. until the WPS stops. I have had it go for more than a day before. it is so frustrating. I have done my research and many others have found this problem. Netgear is aware of it. There support is frustrating. (oversees). they treat you as they would treat themselves. (as if you know nothing). They had me return my router to newegg and I was sent a new one. This does not help!

2. The DLNA server will not update your files as you add them to your attached usb storage. I have fought with this to. although you can access the added files from your computer through the network drive, the DNLA server feature will not see them. I had their tech support try to help with this as well. other than having me log into the readyshare app on the computer to add the files, they were not much help and the problem still persists.

Other Thoughts: I think Netgear tried to add to many features to this device. some are not needed and most do not work as they should. I hope they can work the bugs out of this device and if they do, it will be worth buying. But until they do, I would not buy this again. I have wanted to throw it against the wall a few to many times.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed Router

Pros: Not much

Cons: Not working in less than 12 months

Other Thoughts: Router has been kinda hit or miss for awhile. Looked up support contacts to find after 90 days you have to pay to actually speak with a rep. Have submitted a email ticket but from reading a few other reviews I am not expecting much. This is not a good experience to get from a router I paid $120 for in March. Hopefully Netgear will stand behind their product.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat router, bad firmware

Pros: -Dual band
-Fast Wifi
-Fast and easy setup (took me less than ten minutes)

Cons: -firmware (netgear genie) has some glitches/flaws such as:
1) internet showing up as disconnected or not connected whereas windows is showing connection (and i'm able to surf the net).
2) applying settings/restarting router takes longer than expected (3~10 minutes).
3) netgear genie app caused my computer to restart on system boots. It would load to windows 8 logo than go to blue screen of death (instead of windows 8 startup sceen) then would automatically restart and boot correctly. Uninstalling the app fixed this issue.

(one egg was deducted because of the combined issues above)

The wifi range for 5ghz was lower than i had expected too. One floor down and about 15-20 feet away i only had 3 bars, (no reason to doc an egg for this due to my high expectations.)

Other Thoughts: I've had this router for a week now (11/25/2013) and I'm happy with the performance but disappointed with the netgear genie app which was one of it's selling features. However, it's a great upgrade from my outdated linksys router but i hope it'll last just as long (8 years).

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome router for gaming!

Pros: Although I didn't bought this router through newegg (got it from a retail store), here are my thoughts. It runs flawlessly with no issues of lag when I'm connected through a gigabit wired port with my xbox. It provides enough features in it's web interface that I almost have complete control over the network. I haven't even used the 5 GHz band yet, but I don't need to since the 2.4 GHz band provides enough speed for web browsing even with 5 devices connected. Overall, this is an awesome router for home use. There are so many features of this router that I haven't even touched yet.

As for reliability, I haven't got any hardware or configuration issues yet. I didn't update the firmware yet, and I won't anytime soon. The firmware right out of the box works fine with me, and I would not recommend updating the firmware. Updating the firmware of this router is similar to flashing the bios on the computer; problems can arise if not done correctly, and not really necessary. As with computers, I would keep this router in a clean and ventilated area. I even disabled the 5.8 GHz band to save some energy. You can also reduce power consumption by pressing the wireless button, and even create a schedule for the router to work. I've included a photo of the router mounted to a wall. Again, awesome router!

Cons: The online manual could use some improvement. Took me awhile to find the section on how to configure MAC filtering on this router.
