4 out of 5 eggsGood basic Wireless Router

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: -Fair price for a 2.5Ghz unit
-Easy installation
-Works for my Comcast/Xfinity
-Simple interface

Cons: -Wireless (2.5Ghz) is okay, not the greatest. I have a studio apt and a couple bookcases can block a little bit of the signal, but negligible.
-Won't work if you're wanting to stream games e.g. NVIDIA's SHIELD Tablet. (It kind of works, but not recommended, it really needs the 5.0 Ghz)

Other Thoughts: I got tired of being charged by Xfinity to "rent" a modem. This unit is an overall great unit if you like your primary systems hardwired, and use your wireless for smaller things like smartphones/tablets. Streaming wireless is good for a 2.5Ghz.
If you're debating between this and the next model up which includes the 5.0Ghz, go with the 5.0 Ghz version, your wireless items will thank you and there will be less overall interference one sees at the 2.5 Ghz range. I wanted to use this to stream games to my SHIELD Tablet, but since it's at 2.5 Ghz, it doesn't respond well to heavy streaming. I'll most likely be upgrading to the 5.0 in the next few months.

4 out of 5 eggsSwitched

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: Very easy setup, with this you get modem and WiFi router all in one. On / Off WiFi switch very nice feature.

Cons: Not dual band or ac standard for WiFi.

3 out of 5 eggsConnected

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: No rental charges from ISP. Easy setup. Good parental controls. Advance email support warranty. Decent price range for a combo item.

Cons: I tested this router/cable modem in its separate modes...as a router and then as a cable modem with a router attached. As a router it performs better than the combo. This is also true when it is used as a modem with a secondary router attached to the network. While this is good step forward it is not better than some of the router combos you get from the cable companies. I cannot recommend this 2 in 1.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat, Not for Time Warner

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: Does what it claims to for the most part. Easy setup.

Cons: Does not work as claimed on Time Warner. I pay for 300 mbps service and get about 30. I complained to TWC about it, and the only response they give me is that this router can only possibly deliver 100 mbps, maximum. I know there has to be something going wrong over at TWC, but as it stands, this modem/router is NOT the one you want to choose if you have TWC. It used to be on their list of approved routers, but they removed it after I got it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Rob,

We'd like to figure out what is causing the slow speeds for you. Please email us at netgearteam@netgear.com with your C3000's serial number, a link to this review, your ISP, current firmware, and zip code.

Our sincere apologies for the trouble with TWC-- we look forward to getting it working like it should.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't last, horrible support

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: This device gave me better internet speeds than the combo cable modem/WiFi router which Comcast sent me as part of my service.

Cons: Large complaint - After about six months the device now dies every 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. The WiFi network either goes away completely or it starts prompting us for the WiFi password and not taking anything. This continues until we power cycle it. I have tried to contact support however they are unable to process any warranty claims. They refer me to the paid support offering through gearhead. (http://gearhead.netgear.com/home.html) Clicking the 'contact us' link on that site gives me a blank page. Apparently it's not compatible with mac, I have tried three different browsers and get a blank page on all three.

Small complaint - Connectivity with my Wii which the family uses for Netflix and other online video is much more spotty than the other.

Other Thoughts: I used to like Netgear for home devices.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Aaron,

We are sorry to hear that your C3000 has stopped working properly after six months. Our experts can help you under the hardware warranty-- please email them at netgearteam@netgear.com. In the email please include the serial number of your unit and a copy and paste of your review.

There is nothing we want more than to earn your business again.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

1 out of 5 eggsNot recommeneded

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: All in one product. Wireless works fine, easy setup.

Cons: Can not update the firmware and Ready Share USB doesn't work. I bought the router specifically so that I could hook up a flash drive and use it as quick and easy network drive but was unable to ever get it to work reliably. Netgear support is useless, after 90 days they want you to purchase a $70 extended warranty to provide any assistance.

Other Thoughts: I will never purchase another Netgear product!

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Craig,

You are right in that you can no longer receive free basic phone support. The good news is we can offer you advanced email assistance through the hardware warranty. Please email us at newegg@netgear.com with the serial number of your C3000 and a copy and paste of your review.

We apologize for the confusion and look forward to hearing from you.

NETGEAR Team

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate, customer.service

3 out of 5 eggsBetter than what your ISP would give you, but not amazing.

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: - Uses NETGEAR's newer admin UI similar to their other routers like the R7000. Admin UI is fairly well easy to use and allows for a decent amount of customization.

- No WEP option for wireless. Only WPA and WPA2.

- Has Wireless Isolation On/Off feature.

- Standard NETGEAR parental controls allow for site blocking by keyword or domain, service blocking, by schedule and has e-mail notifications for alerts.

- Router mode can be disabled you so can just use as a cable modem. Just handy if you want to use your own router.

- Has a handy Wireless Channel proximity scanner to see other SSIDs in the area. You can optimize your channel.

- Guest Network for 2.4Ghz Wireless.

- USB readyshare functionality allows for https connection.

- Admin UI has a lot of menus for logs and connection info, including downstream/upstream connection stats. Neat.

Cons: - No 5Ghz radio, only 2.4Ghz. :\

- Only one DDNS service available (www.dyndns.org).

- Remote management does not have https connection.

- Copy speed to USB readyshare drive was abysmal. rsync recorded a whooping 602KB/s for transferring a 600MB file over to a USB thumb drive. I tested both a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 thumb drive. I did not test a USB 3.0 connected Hard Drive, but speeds won't be any better.

Other Thoughts: When purchasing this modem-router combo don't be expecting premium router features. More basic things like VPN server or secure remote management is missing. However, think of it more of a replacement for the really bad cable-modem router your cable ISP would give you. This is device isn't amazing, but it is possibly way better than anything your ISP would bundle you.

Cable Modem related functions are un-tested. Only the routing portions of this WiFi Cable Modem Router were tested.

Only 2 available ethernet ports, so plan accordingly if you want to use this device with more than 2 ethernet connected machines. Get a switch.

Unit doesn't get too hot, warm to the touch only.

2 out of 5 eggsStay Away

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: The only pros that I can think of are the ease of setup and the cost of the unit per features provided.

Cons: The unit constantly rebooted, taking down the entire network for about 1-2 min every day. It's firewall also interpreted regular web traffic such as YouTube or Spotify as a DoS attack and disabling this feature in the web ui does nothing to fix this issue.

Other Thoughts: I ended up returning the device and bought a Buffalo WHR-300HP2D and a Linksys DPC3008. The two cost me $49 more than this combo router but I haven't had an issue since.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Matt,

We're sorry about the trouble you had -- we stand behind our cable modem/routers and are here to help. We recognize you've returned the router, but we hope to earn your business in the future. Please contact us at newegg@netgear.com with any further issues!

1 out of 5 eggsDont do it.

This review is from: Netgear C3000 N300 WiFi Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem Router 2 In 1

Pros: Set up worked.

Cons: Router aspect of the gateway low powered and unreliable. Signal continuity is poor. Genie interface is awful.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We'd love to help you with the problems you had. Can you get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com with a detailed description of the problems you had? Specifically, what issues did you have with the signal and the Genie app/interface?
