1 out of 5 eggsPoor outdoor camera

Pros: nice automatic timer

Cons: This wonderful camera has turned out to be a bust . It is not very durable and not very forgiving of common dangers of outdoor photography First I got something in between the dust cover and the lens and lens was scratched. Second, I dropped it at the air museum and it landed on the edge of the extended lens: it bent and the lens will no longer retract and the camera is no longer for taking pictures, although it is a wonderful photo viewer. To get it fixed by Canon is over 300. To buy a refurbished one is 185.. ya used and rebuilt. Another weakness of the camera is that the lenses are not sealed to moisture. So if you blow on the lens, dust and fog will lodge behind the lens. It will eventually evaporate, but the camera is useless until then. My advice, never put you camera into your pocket, get a small belt case or something along those lines, and if the weather is an issue, leave it home. This camera is not built to take average outdoor and is over priced

1 out of 5 eggsPoor indoor pictures

Pros: Nice Outdoor pictures

Cons: Slow response time. Most indoor pictures in automode use high iso and no flash resulting in grainy pictures. Almost all my indoor pictures in auto are iso1600.

Other Thoughts: I own the previous model sx230 but since this is the current model I figured a review would be more helpful here. In my opinion this is the most frustrating camera I have ever owned. I took my canon camcorder hfs20 and took side by side shots and the camcorder took better indoor shots every time.

4 out of 5 eggsReponsive and Durable

Pros: Good bang for the buck. Zoom is mega close up! Took it up to the mountains while snowboarding in Vail.

Cons: Colors are a little lackluster compared to Nikon J1. CMOS sensitivity could be better.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Camera, Great Package, Great Price

Pros: This camera is likely the best pocket camera on the market right now. I formerly owned a Canon SX100IS. This new unit has higher quality video, and audio (stereo). It's more compact and lighter than the older models. The wide angle (25mm) and 20x optical zoom are top-notch. This model also allows zooming while filming, although it makes noise that gets picked up by the mic in quiet environments. The image stabilization has also improved. For pictures, the color is accurate, but a bit over-saturated. There are many tools to manipulate photos, maybe too many. Burst mode is great: 10 photos in a second. Slow-mo is nice too, up to 240 fps. Separate video and photo buttons are extremely welcome enhancements. The mini-HDMI port is nice. It's a good all-around pocket camera, with good video capabilities. It will replace my video camera for basic video shooting. The included 8 GB SD card and extra warranty were nice add-ons.

Cons: There are no resolution settings between 2 and 6 Megapixel. I would like to see 3 or 4M. Battery life is shorter than most, mostly because of the smaller battery pack. It is rated at 230 pics/charge. Buy extra battery packs. Record time is limited by the battery, by time, and by files size: One hour and 4GB limits. I managed to get just over one hour total of 640x480 video clips on a fresh battery. Flash recharge time between pictures is less than impressive, probably 4-6 seconds. Using an A/C adapter (extra) means taking out the battery and installing a 'blank' battery that has a socket in the bottom to receive the DC plug, ie, no dedicated DC port. Long exposure images (over 1 sec) are locked in to ISO 100, so it's not as good as my old camera at very-low-light conditions. The GPS is not as quick to find the location as my smartphone, or dedicated GPS unit. The included software did not work on my Win XP computer.

Other Thoughts: I would buy it again, despite the cons.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat camera

Pros: -Great fast action capture in bright light.
-Good low light performance
-extreme zoom in low profile
-compact design
-easy to use
-very customizable

Cons: flash takes a little long between shots from what I've noticed. Other than that I can't find any big faults.

Other Thoughts: I'm not a camera power user...in fact up until now I've really only kept to using the camera on my phone (htc evo) and that was good enough for me. But after a vacation I found my phone severely lacking and wanted an upgrade.

I did a lot of research on which camera to pick. I'm the buyer that likes to pick the best of the best in my price range and I research thoroughly. I was going to get the sx230, but the flash really annoyed me how it took up the whole edge of the camera and popped up every time it powered up regardless of flash on/off. I'm glad to say this new design fixes that issue. the flash pops up only when flash is needed (detected by auto, or when set to on) AND it only takes up 1/2 of the corner of the camera allowing grip placement to not be affected when it does pop up.

I can't say if this is better than those in it's price range, all I can say is I'm extremely satisfied with the performance for what I use it for.
