3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: Built-in IR; quick transition from dark to light; manual settings for day/night only; good clarity once focused (for 640x480); decent wifi range.

Cons: Ability to adjust to outside ambient light compared to other models near non-existent. Hours wasted attempting to dial in brightness, contrast & color saturation.

Other Thoughts: If using these in a strictly interior home/office scene, where light conditions are more controlled and dominated by artificial light, these cameras are very nice for the price point. In areas w/ predominant exterior lighting, e.g. four season room or protect porch area, this has to be one of worst cameras I've dealt w/. Trendnet cameras have dominated the majority of installs I've performed and proven to be stalwart units in every climate and condition, from sub-zero to trapped in a box under the sun. But while the IP551 d/n camera has no fewer options vs. some of the older, similar and less expensive models, it was completely useless in areas where natural sunlight provided nearly all illumination during daylight hours. These were to replace 2 older model Trendnet cameras assisted at night by external IR flood lamps. No luck. Relegated to basements and hallways now.

5 out of 5 eggsTV-IP551 video led to arrest of attempted burglary

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: House broken into but TRENDnet TV-IP551WI caught the suspect on camera. This led to the arrest of the suspect based on photo evidence (auto and body/face pictures).

Camera is setup indoors looking out the front window. Police were very pleased with the photo quality and low cost of the camera.

Purchased 2 more. Latest hardware shipping is v1.1R (latest available as of July 2014).

Cons: Included software is limited.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend the TRENDnet line of cameras. Video recording is a must for any security system.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: Night vision

Cons: Difficult set up
Inferior camera quality

Other Thoughts: I was excited to get this, thinking it would be an upgrade from my D-link DCS-931L. My D-link produces a nice picture but lacks night viewing. However, Trendnet took hours to set up. Then the downloaded app has limited features (forcing you to purchase an upgrade to get the benefit of all the features listed).
The only advantage this has over my D-link, is the ability to view the camera in the dark. I might have purchase the upgrade to app had the camera quality been okay. It's not. The image quality this camera produces is so inferior to my D-link that I'm sending it back and getting a day/night D-link camera.

1 out of 5 eggsWireless fature defective

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: There are no pro's, as I cannot set up product, and have not used product

Cons: I called TRENDnet tech. support, after several minutes on hold, a person took my information, and informed me that someone would call me back. That was more than two weeks ago. I believe that I am past the time to return products (4 cameras). If Newegg would accept them back, they would charge me a re-stocking fee. I regret making the purchase of products from TREDnet, who has no customer service skills whatsoever. Yes, I also emailed them, and did not receive a response. Do yourself a favor: Contact customer support of a manufacturer, before you buy the product! *I had to select an egg...otherwise, I would not even give one egg!

2 out of 5 eggsCould be winner, if audio was clear

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: Picture quality is solid, including low light/no light scenes. Using as the better infant monitor than purpose built devices and picture quality at the is fantastic. Can turn of the LED light using the configuration so as not to wake my daughter. Solid options for email/FTP. Supports wired and wireless. The app works well on Android for view from Trendnet.

Cons: Audio is totally worthless. Very annoying cracking sounds constantly. Tried all options, wired, wireless, latest firmware from march 2014. No improvement. Other reviews indicated audio issues, but it sounded like the firmware update would address it. From my experience, they have not. I have 2 of these. Have not tried the other one, but I suspect it will be the same.

Other Thoughts: My first IP camera. Love the picture, hate the audio. Check Google for Trendnet and audio issues. Maybe common across several lines. Perhaps support will help. Everything else I own from Trendnet is top notch. Not sure how they let this one slide. For the price, it maybe worth the picture own, but functional audio would have made it perfect.

4 out of 5 eggsFree should be Free.

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: Excellent camera, easy setup, connects to wireless network and is easily accessible from anywhere on the network. Excellent night vision quality.

Cons: "Free App for smart phones" charges to unlock all features. App freezes after 5-10 minutes of use.

Other Thoughts: We bought this camera to setup as a baby monitor. It works wonderfully for this purpose. The tablet app works well for checking on the baby when he sets off the audio baby monitor at night, but can't be used exclusively as a baby monitor because the image will tend to freeze after 5-10 minutes of viewing. More than once, I have looked at an image of a sleeping baby while hearing him cry through our audio baby monitor.

The free app costs $3.99 to upgrade to the full version. I knocked an egg off for that.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: This is a tough one... It works? Kinda?

Maybe for $9.99 it'd be worth it...

Cons: Almost unusable due to excessive noise on audio channel. I mean, it obliterates everything else. A constant static/chop noise that will drive anyone insane. It's obviously tied to the WiFi as it sends data. So, it's a design issue at the Layer 0/1 level and won't be resolved with a firmware update. They need to replace them all. AKA: recall.

Also, the setup could be better.

Other Thoughts: How to make it work with WiFi (I have a Windows 8.1 64-bit machine):

1) Follow software to install and initiate WiFI.
2) Power cycle camera.
3) Change channels on WiFi router (one could also power cycle it) as this causes the device to renegotiate onto the network.
4) Exit out of the software, if you want to, you can start the software again and it should scan and find the camera this time.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We apologize for the experience you’re having with the camera and we’d like to make it right. Please email me at Adrian@trendnet.com with your contact information and a link to this review.

2 out of 5 eggsVideo is good sound is bad

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: Easy Setup and good video quality, LEDs can be turned off, small form factor.

Cons: Getting a lot of feedback noise on both wired and wireless connection. I updated to the latest firmware which did not help. I am using this as a baby cam so I was looking forward to using the audio but with the noise its just not possible.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend if planning on using audio

Manufacturer Response:

I understand and you are correct, it is an unpleasant experience to hear noise. Please email me directly at adrian@trendnet.com with “Newegg TV-IP551WI review” in the subject line and I will contact you to resolve this issue ASAP.

Adrian

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Camera

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: It works! Being used as a nanny cam. At full 20 fps, is pretty steady over my wifi. Night Vision is bright for what I use it for.

Cons: Power light and activity light are bright and can't be disabled by a setting. It actually kept my baby up at night with the amount of light this thing emits. Just taped over that led. Obviously not the IR ones though. Disabled sound because its horrible. I had a audio baby monitor already, so I just continued to use that. So far it has only locked up on me once in 2 months, hopefully that was a fluke.

Other Thoughts: I use my android phone or web browser to peek on my daughter to see if she is awake. No more tip toeing around or having to listen closely at her audio baby monitor. I use my VPN connection for when I am outside of my wifi to connect. Due to what I use this for, the only software I use is the TrendnetView app on my phone.

4 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551WI 640 x 480 MAX Resolution RJ45 Wireless N Day/Night Internet Camera

Pros: Easy to Setup, image quality is OK.

Cons: A bit difficult to focus. DC Power Cable could have been longer. I wanted to mount this over a doorway, using a standard wall outlet. I'll need to make a longer DC cable, but no big deal.

Other Thoughts: Remember to upgrade the firmware right away.

I had no problems using the included software to setup the camera. After removing the network port, camera signed onto WiFi automatically.

Unit is a bit bigger than I was expecting
