2 out of 5 eggsSo far, so bad

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Not many.

Cons: High failure rate.

Other Thoughts: I purchased four of these drives for a Synology NAS and set them up to run in RAID 10. Over the course of two days, I set up the NAS, set up the RAID, ran a parity test, and then copied some files to the NAS. On the third day one of the WD Reds failed completely. Three days of operation! Here's hoping the other three last a bit longer than that.

I have a fifth Red that I had purchased just over a year ago for my HTPC. That drive has a mind of its own. It appears to be close to failure (failing to write, disappearing from the system, etc.), but keeps hanging on and passing all tests. Very strange.

The best part about all of this is that WD makes you pay to return their defective products. Ain't that just a kick in the...

I guess it's time to try another brand, but the quality of all hard drives seems to have taken a nose dive over the last five years.

4 out of 5 eggsRunning 3 of this in a software RAID5 setup

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I purchased 3 of these to run under linux via mdadm in a RAID5 setup. Performance is as expected and no complaints about the drives.

Cons: 1 was DOA upon delivery and had to be RMA'd for a replacement. Docking an egg for that.

2 out of 5 eggsCrashed after 5 months

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I had five of these installed into my Synology DS-1513+ in RAID6 configuration.

Thankfully I can have up to two HDD's fail and still not lose any data...

Cons: What a shame, crashed after 5 months of minimal usage.

Other Thoughts: I always thought WD HDD's were good to go, they have never failed me in the past but five months of usage is pretty bad.

4 out of 5 eggsYes - shipping with nasware 3.0

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Can't comment much on this. Good price point and we'll see how the reliability is. Giving it 4 eggs as they are currently running and copying up in a QNAP nas.

Cons: Listing is incorrect and I was unable to get a definitive answer on what version of nasware these drives were shipping with. Neither newegg NOR WD were able to answer the question. In fact Newegg said that they were most certainly shipping with 2.0 as that is what is in the product description....they were wrong.

4 out of 5 eggsreliable

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: So far none of my 30 WD Red gave up on me.
Some of them have more than 8000 hours on Linux ZFS volumes.
For the "price" they are the most reliable drives I found.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Why aren't all drive reliable ?
I do not really care about performance .. I just want them to work.
When I want speed I just use SSD anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS Use

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Drive has been running great 24/7 for over 9 months now. Used in a home-built NAS running Linux, can stream 1080p files to a HTPC without issue.

Cons: Like ANY drive, it will eventually die, that's a fact of life. Keep good backups.

Other Thoughts: Just bought another

4 out of 5 eggs4 Of these

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: * Updaeted to NASWARE 3.0
*Fast
*Reliable
*4 drives-- none DOA yet!

Cons: *Earlier revisions seem to have bee prone to issues.
*May have to run WDILDER to prolong life-- haven't tested yet on NASWARE 3.0 Drives

Other Thoughts: I have bought 4 of these over the past few months, the first two in the spring and summer, and now I just bought two more last week. I'm trying to spread them out to make sure I get different batches. The two I just bought have the updated NASWARE 3.0 firmware

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: It's a major upgrade over standard mechanical desktop drives. Quieter, less power, less heat, and faster data transfer. As good as it gets for mechanical SATA.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Very impressed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I love these 3TB Reds.

Fairly cheap for what you're getting.
Faster than green drives, better lifespan than green drives, lower power than green drives, lower temperature than green drives.

Cons: None. I'll be buying a few more soon enough. (Not for a bad reason, I just want more storage)

Other Thoughts: I have two of these currently in my home server. Great for streaming media around the house.
