A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

184-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR SDRAM memory for desktop computers. Standard 184-pin DIMMs are available in PC1600 DDR SDRAM, PC2100 DDR SDRAM, PC2700 DDR SDRAM, and PC3200 DDR SDRAM.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgrading Dell Dimension 3000

Pros: I bought this memory for a 2005 Dell Dimension 3000. I am not a gamer so an older computer is fine for my needs. However, Dell tech support said I would be unable to update this to a modern computer. They were wrong! I replaced the existing memory with this kit of 2GB DDR 400 (PC 3200) as suggested on the Crucial website so that I could run Windows 7 32 bit version. In case anyone else is considering a similar upgrade, you should check the processor and motherboard limits yourself instead of relying on Dell. They are in the business of selling people new computers, not helping you make the old ones last forever. In addition to adding more RAM than Dell said was possible and Windows 7 which they said was incompatible with the Dimension 3000, I added a PCI video card ZOTAC NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 (low power so I would not need to upgrade the PSU) and a beautiful IPS monitor Dell S2240M. Several years ago I had upgraded the hard drive.

The conventional advice for those on a budget is to find an inexpensive refurbished computer to replace an aging computer, and for those not on a budget the advice is to buy a new computer every few years. However, my cost for RAM and the video card was $55 for each and Windows 7 costs $85 if you need to purchase it. WEI rating improved from 1.0 to 3.7 (a processor limitation.) Other scores after upgrade are RAM 4.5, graphics 4.6, gaming graphics 5.5, and hard disk 5.9. For my purposes the computer is not yet obsolete.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Crucial was recommended by two books that I purchased to learn more about upgrading computers.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what we needed

Pros: Bought this to upgrade my parents' computer instead of them spending money on a new PC. The sticks were easy to install and have been working great from the very beginning. The price was good too.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgraded My HP Pavilion a1230n

Pros: Dropped right in and worked with no issues. A huge improvement from the stock RAM.

Cons: Price still feels a bit steep considering the computer I'm upgrading is pretty old now by most standards. Not a deal-breaker.

5 out of 5 eggsRely on it

Pros: It always works without a hitch.

Cons: I didn't get it in the first place.

Other Thoughts: Been using Crucial for many years. Purchased a different brand for 3 builds and of course nothing but grief for all of them eventually. I know better than that, just wanted to try sometthing different and paid twice for it. Always rely on Crucial.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Works as promised

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: If you are upgrading an IBM Thinkcentre be aware that you cannot use all of the memory that is installed as the bios has up to 1.25 gig taken. You can go into the bios and disable serveral options to free up some memory. I got it down to 0.5gig.
