Ideal networking solution for home and small business environment requires high degree of convenience and flexibility in functionality, configuration and maintenance. Home users and network administrators have been struggling to maintain multiple devices in order to support functionalities required while at the same time ensuring that a secure environment is provided.

The DIR-880L is a concurrent dual band wireless router upgraded to latest 802.11ac(draft) standard technology while staying compatible with IEEE 802.11b/g/n and IEEE 802.11a networks. The 5GHz standard adopts higher modulation as well as 2.4GHz does that all can reach best performance than competitor (3Tx+3Rx PHY rate up to 1900Mbps: 2.4G 600Mbps + 5G 1300Mbps). It upgrades your network to the next generation of wireless technology and makes your wireless connectivity faster and wider to meet the blooming demand to multimedia application. User can enjoy the higher performance of wireless networking while streaming for more and more digital multimedia devices. That also improves wire performance by NAT acceleration and expands the wireless coverage with "Advanced AC Beamforming". Moreover, DIR-880L supports two USB ports (one is USB2.0, the other is high speed USB3.0) that can easy access and share everything you want via mydlink shareport APP on everywhere.

1 out of 5 eggsD-Link Dir-880L

Pros: Good product when it doesn't lose connection.

Cons: I'm having a problem with the router having lost connection every morning. I have emailed dlink 2 times now concerning this problem and to date (over 1 month) they have not replied to my emails or called me on this problem. This is not the dlink that used to be.

Other Thoughts: I've owned 3 other dlink routers over the years and the only time I had a problem in the past dlink was fast to respond and help rectify my problem.
I will not be purchasing another dlink product in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsReview of AC1900 - great range, simple admi

Pros: Easy to setup
Simple interface
Good range
Power button for easy power-cycling

Cons: Less advance settings

Other Thoughts: The AC1900 was one of the easiest routers I've setup. You can do it though a free app on your smartphone, or by simply pluging it in and typing 192.168.0.1 in your computer's browser -- a setup wizard will guide you through the process. From the wizard, you setup your admin password and wireless logins. Although I did have to reboot my computer before the setup worked correctly (I had no internet connection until doing so).

The admin interface is extremely easy to use, but perhaps a little too easy. I found advanced settings to be somewhat sparse. For example, I was unable to turn off the QoS Engine, which for whatever reason causes issues for an iPad 2. But I found removing all devices from the priority box nearly does the same thing.

This router replaced my TP-LINK TL-WDR4300 (which in turn replaced my D-Link DIR-655). Where I haven't seen much improvement in speeds, I have seen a huge increase in range. Before, my smartphone (GS5) would only have a few bars when in my livingroom (the router is located in my office on the lower level of my house), but now I get full bars not only in my living room, but in my front yard -- it even extends to the street.

The 5GHz frequency extends much further than my old router; before I wasn't even able to get 5GHz in the livingroom. Keep in mind that a 5GHz connection will have a lower range than 2.4GHz - higher frequency signals don't penetrate through objects as well. But it's nice in that there are less people in your neighborhood likely using it, so there are less interference problems on 5GHz. For me, the 2.4GHz ran without any interference from neighbor routers and I didn't need to tweak anything for it to do so (unlike past routers where I've had to play around with different channels).

The power button on the AC1900 is nice too; I don't have to unplug the router when doing a power cycle (the button makes it quick and easy). And setting up forwarding was really simple. Such as Remote Desktop and HTTP. No issues there whatsoever. Connecting to my company's VPN worked like a charm as well.

Overall, I find the AC1900 operates well, with most default settings working right off the bat. But if you want a more advanced admin tool you might want to look at replacing the firmware with a third-party solution.

4 out of 5 eggsworks well

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: The intranet login site is very finicky. Sometimes it has demanded only a Chrome browser. For this minor hassle I deducted an egg.

Other Thoughts: Upgrade the firmware to DD-WRT for more options.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Device

Pros: I used to have DIR-655, DIR-625 models from Dlink. I liked them all in the past. But with increased demand of wifi connection quality for video calls through apps, I decided to choose an "high-end" yet affordable device. DIR-880L is an excellent choice:
1) wifi signal is instantly stronger and longer range than prior models. Quality of video/voice calls through wifi improved
2) simplified management interface. The interface becomes lot more intuitive
3) The "reserved IP" feature is lot more stable. Old 655 model has a problem with IP address reservation

Also, Dlink customer support is great. An agent (ID=AR004620) helped me to resolved an network issue (Ticket#=C6653331)

Cons: I hope a few things will be added to the next firmware release:
1) time schedule for "Guest Wifi" access. For example, my home wifi is on from 7am-11pm everyday. But, I only want guest wifi to be on Sat & Sun only from 3pm-10pm. This was possible for old model 655, but not for this new model
2) QoS: there are only 11 space for QoS but I have 25 devices connected on the network (1 NSA, 5 digital phones, 3 network printers, 2 PCs, 2 Chromeboxes, 2 network media players, and the rest of iPad and Android). Since I am quite technical, I hope to be able to further control QoS setting--allow advanced users to edit the technical categories of "Highest", "High", "Medium" and allow users to add categories with customized settings
3) The web interface should add "system management" tab to allow users to click a button to reboot the router without going downstairs
4) Web filter: currently only allow digits like 1.1.2.3 but I hope they will allow words like "google.com"
5) I hope to see "help tips" for each setting so that users can read those tips and decide whether to turn features on or not.

Other Thoughts: Currently, with many of us are using iPad and android devices, the need for a high-end consumer router with strong capability of traditional wired traffic handling (PC web surfing and file access to NAS) and the current demand of a strong and reliable wifi is great. After using Dlink for over 10 years, I know Dlink produces offer consistent reality and quality. However, I have been waiting on Dlink for over 3 years for a worthwhile router to come out. This 880L is the one with the best quality/price ratio and with simplified user interface yet with enough control to set the router.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgraded Wifi Router

Pros: 3 external antennas, easy setup, 3.0 USB port, Top Notch Customer Service Support, excellent reliability, established brand.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is an upgraded router from another DLink (DIR-655) that I've had for 6 years. I purchase another brand starting with letter "N" but had one too many drop signals. I've decided to go with this model after reading positive reviews. Customer service rep (Leny/Case# C6649922) was quick and professional in resolving my setup issue. Thanks DLink!

5 out of 5 eggsSuper Router!

Pros: Dual Band goodness. Very easy to set up. Lots of options.

Cons: It's huge!

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace my aging DGL-4500 and I have to say, I couldn't be happier. It's nice that this router can simultaneously broadcast in both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz at the same time.

The setup was very easy, even when assigning static IP addresses to all the wired and wireless gadgetry that I have in my apartment.

Setting up the guest network was just as simple.

I will say, the unit itself is ginormous. Which may or may not affect your decision to purchase.

All in all a very nice wireless router.

1 out of 5 eggsNo MAC filtering on this router

Pros: The color is nice.

Cons: This router does not allow you to see MAC address or do MAC filtering. Also, there are no 3rd party firmwares that support this router. WiFi range is not good on this router. I have several security cameras on the property and at distance, they often drop. AC speed slow.

1 out of 5 eggsPort Forwarding/Virtual Server only for 15 devices!

Pros: It's fast, stable and nice/clean UI, good range

Cons: Limit of 15 devices for Port Forwarding/Virtual Server!

I consider myself an average user, but I do have bunch of IP cams that needs to be accessed outside the network. Hence first feature that I was looking for is to configure port forwarding (in Dlink it's called virtual server which seems backwards to me coming from Netgear) and I was surprised to find out that this high end router only allows up to 15 devices to be configured in Virtual Server or Port Forwarding. If they increase the limit beyond 15 devices via firmware update, it's a 5 stars from me.

Other Thoughts: I've updated from R7000 because it was having compatibility issues with some of the clients. Comparing to R7000, The both have about the same 5Ghz range, but DIR-880L has better reach with 2.4Ghz band. The throughput is slightly better with the R7000, but overall browsing experience I would give this to DIR-880L, It feels snappier to browse internet, stream HD videos etc...

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback as we take the input seriously and we are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with the DIR-880L. We will pass on the information you have provided to our Product Management team for consideration. If you ever run into any issues with the camera feel free to contact our technical support team for assistance by calling the toll-free number 1-877-453-5465. Thank you for choosing D-Link.
