4 out of 5 eggsRefurb Dell from Blair Tech

Pros: Ordered a D630 but received an upgraded D830 - nice and welcome surprise, must have run out of D630's. Very clean, perfect LCD pixels, ran great out of the box. Bought it for the old style RS-232 port. Would have given 5 eggs except for a cosmetic flaw - see cons.

Cons: They sprayed some kind of de-glossing material over the entire keyboard, palm rest, and track pad area. A glob of it formed on the left click button and was sticky. Denatured alcohol dissolved it. With use the palm rest has become sticky as the material is worn. I plan to remove the material from the entire area below the keyboard and that will fix that.

Other Thoughts: Shipped quickly and packaged well in a sturdy corrugated box. No manuals or any paperwork but those are on the web. I expected some bad pixels in the display but not one bad pixel. Great price too.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I am very pleased with this computer. It was very clean: the keyboard looks and feels new, and it only has some slight wear scratches on the outside of case. It came with a new install of Windows 7 and had to run about 166 updates the first night. To my surprise, it had Open Office installed which was not mentioned on the specs list. Open Office opens the Word, WordPerfect, Excel, and Power Point documents I usually use. It will stream video online without buffering on YouTube or Hulu (obviously depends on your internet connection). It will play DVD's through the DVD drive. You can also upload software through the DVD drive. Has about 44.2 GB left on HD after all the updates etc. So far, it performs better than I expected! After a slight bump in the road (see below), everything works great. I would highly recommend the refurbished computers from Blair Technologies!

Cons: Just to be clear, there are no HDMI or Svideo ports, which I think it says in the specs.

Other Thoughts: When I first turned it on, the battery light flashed and it said "no battery installed." The warranty supplied said they would test it to see that it worked. You get two contact options in the information supplied along with the warranty paper. You get an email address on one sheet (not sure who gets the email) , and you get a number for Blair tech support on the warranty information. I sent the email, to which I got no reply, but I called tech support at Blair technology, and after a few tests they had me do, they said they would send another used battery, or they would give me a credit and would send me a website where I could buy a battery. I opted for the used battery. It arrived in 4 days! I put it in and charged it. I have been running on battery for an hour and 38 minutes, and it has 22% left as I write! They were very nice and wanted to make sure I had a working battery to start with, although no warranty is made as to how long it will work, which I expected! Again, I am well pleased!

4 out of 5 eggsNo Complaints

Pros: The purchase process was straightforward and worked as advertised. I got what I ordered and the laptop has worked well with only one hiccup which repeated itself twice.
I'll detail the "hiccup" in the cons section but so far my overall experience has been successful and satisfying. I mean... c'mon, I paid $189 dollars for a refurbished laptop that allows me to avoid Win 8 and it was shipped it to me within 7 days and it works as advertised - WIN. I'm typing this review on it as we "speak".

Cons: When I turned on the laptop for the first time the screen was un-readably dim. I tried using the Fn+ dimming/brightening keys but it didn't brighten the screen enough. I plugged the laptop into my desktop monitor and went through every option I could (power options, display management options, device settings, etc) to ensure I didn't miss something that would effect the display. It seemed to brighten the display more and when I re-started the laptop the display came on at a normal level. It then functioned well for a few days and randomly went to a unusably dim level as I began watching a DVD. Again I attempted to brighten the display with the function+ brightening key but didn't help. Yes I ensured that the "auto-brightness" feature this D630 has was disabled. I unplugged the power cord, pulled out the battery and re-started it and it fired up with the display looking normal. It hasn't repeated the problem since.

Other Thoughts: For what it is... a 5+ year-old, refurbished laptop with 2GB RAM, an nVidia video card w/128MB dedicated RAM and a 14" monitor... it works fine for checking e-mail, surfing the web and watching DVDs. For $189 it was a satisfactory deal.

4 out of 5 eggsGood so far

Pros: First off... it was cheap. $189 delivered to my door. Oh yeah - shipping took three business days! So far... winning!
I've checked out the wireless, DVD player, LAN connection, web browser and they have all seemed to work. I needed an inexpensive laptop for web browsing and simple Microsoft Office tasks. I don't know how well it will stand up but... it functions as advertised so far.

Cons: The only problem I had was that the display was set to an ALMOST unusably low brightness that I couldn't read it. I hooked it up to my desktop monitor and was able to fix the brightness easily. I could see how a computer noobie could get this product in this condition and feel like, "HEY?! WTH?" I would recommend that the technician ensure the display is set to a more usable brightness to prevent unhappy returns from folks who may not have the knowledge or extra monitor lying around.

Other Thoughts: Time will tell how well it continues to function.
