4 out of 5 eggsWell Respected Brand

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: For the money, a good fit hands down

Cons: If you never have to call or contact ZyXEL customer support for any help or product information, this is the perfect unit for you. Calling or contacting them is a nightmare and they don't seem to reply to email very well either.

Other Thoughts: There are models that do not respond in the web security to https: but they don't tell you this and make you purchase upgrade system. If you are trying to block facebook for instance, this isn't a good model to buy. You need to spend some $$ on the upgraded versions.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Performing Firewall with Good Security Features and Good WiFi Range

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: This is an excellent firewall for this price range. It has a nice set of security features. Setup was straight forward and the menus were easy to navigate and pretty well laid out. Only rarely did I have to do a little bit of hunting to look for a particular setting or item. Even updating the firmware was easy. This unit would be good for a home or small, possibly medium sized office setting.

The WiFi range is very good, and the antennas are removable, giving you the option to upgrade to larger antennas.

The case is a combination of metal and plastic and has enough weight so that the attached cables don't pull it off the desk.

As you climb up the levels of firewall devices you tend to need a higher level of knowledge and understanding of network and security appliances. You should have no problem setting this unit up with just general/basic knowledge of routers and firewalls. There are a lot of features and settings, so if you do want to put together a complex setup, that will require a higher level of knowledge and understanding.

Excellent US based tech support.

Cons: The first unit started having WiFi problems a little after a year. It needed to be reset regularly to get WiFi working again. Tech support set up an RMA. Unfortunately the RMA replacement was defective and needed to be RMA'd again. I had to dock an egg for the two failed units.

When the fan turns on, it's a bit noisy. It's more of the high pitched whine that it makes that is more annoying than the actual sound volume. For the most part I only hear the fan going on during restarts. I don't run enough things to cause the CPU to heat up much.

Other Thoughts: I always recommend using a firewall, whether it's in a home or office setting. With so much personal and financial information on your computer and transferred online, it's worth the extra security. You should also always use a full Internet security suite, not just an anti-virus. And yes, you can use software firewalls, like those included with Internet security suites, and a hardware firewall together. It's just another layer of security and protection.

I used to own the ZyXEL VFG6005N for over a year. I upgraded to this unit mostly because I wanted a stronger WiFi range, which this USG 20W definitely provided. I also wanted to step up to the next level of security features, which this also provided.

I used the ZyXEL VFG6005N for over a year. Then I upgraded to the ZyXEL ZyWALL USG20W. I had the ZyWALL USG 20W for a bit over a year as well, and now I just upgraded to the ZyXEL USG40W. I've been very happy with each unit and the US based tech support.

4 out of 5 eggsProbably the best firewall router for small businesses

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Lots of settings means lots of customization. If you need two subnets, need them to be separated from each other, and need different restrictions to each subnet, this is the device for you. Third party router firmware, like DD-WRT, just can't compare for all those features.

Cons: Lots of settings means lots of complication. Be prepared to study, research, and test. And each test requires a restart which requires 4 minutes of wait until it reboots. Also, sometimes the device just stops working. You'll have to unplug it for a long time, as in several hours, before it will start working again. Keep a backup router handy for such down times.

Other Thoughts: If you don't want a separate wireless access point and need a firewall router, this is your best choice.

3 out of 5 eggsBe ready to read the knowledge base

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: A host of possible configurations to handle many different consumer and small business situations. Bought two for two different locations and established VPN to join networks from both locations.

Cons: Extremely difficult to configure and hours reading Zyxel knowledge base articles, u-tube self help and email help desk. The manual that comes with the device is next to useless and is more like a dictionary that covers every radio button in the gui. Initial setup was easy and could get internet within a few minutes. Connect the LAN and wireless networks is through a bridge function and not described in the manual anyway as a use scenario. It easily took several days to work out the details of a VPN configuration. The device itself had a very long reset period and setting were slow to talk effect. I had to reset to factory conditions twice.

Other Thoughts: Maybe all VPN routers are difficult to configure, but this one seem to take it to another level.

Get the TheGreenBow IPSec client VPN software to help debug.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value for small business firewall

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: This device has a ton of features at a very low price. It will do site-to-site VPN, as well as browser-based VPN. It is absurdly flexible and loaded with a ton of features. VLANs, granular routing, flexible management, all is here at a great price.

Cons: The interface is extremely complex. It takes a while to learn. But again, very flexible, and once you get over the learning curve, it is a great deal.

Other Thoughts: Don't hesitate to contact support for questions. They are based in southern California and I was really happy with contacting their support, asking questions, and seeing just how helpful they would/could be. I was pleasantly surprised that they were very knowledgeable and happy to explain the interface and work with me. Great service and great product.

5 out of 5 eggsBest For the Price

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: For the price you cant beat the control you have of the this, not to mention the option for a 32GB USB drive you can attach and use as a NAS.
The GUI interface is fantastic for any and all controls, words cannot describe how great of a product this is.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsWLAN Dead after 1 Day

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Full-featured, cheaper alternative to some of the other name brands for a SOHO firewall.

Cons: Difficult to set up compared to other alternatives, Wireless LAN died after a day.

Other Thoughts: Got this to replace a D-link DIR 655 as a better value option instead of one of the other more recognizable brands. I've used Zyxel wireless NICs in the past and they've never let me down, and this model got good reviews. Got it set up fairly quickly, although bridging the WLAN and LAN1 took a little bit of time, this setup process (regardless of the object-oriented interface) could have been made easier. There are good tutorials out there if you need help. However, after 1 day of use the WLAN completely died due to what must be a hardware failure. No LED, WLAN just shows as down in the admin tool. Even after factory reset, nothing. Had to go back to the Dlink which is running like a champ. I guess you get what you pay for...

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: Simple to use and setup, nice GUI, no need for CLI

Cons: Not a big fan of active cooling on a firewall, a firewall is a "set it and forget it" device for me, I have no way of knowing if the fan is still running. I would much prefer passive cooling on a device like this.

You have to buy another model or 2 up if you wan't Antivirus at the Firewall.

Other Thoughts: All in all not bad for the money, does offer options for free VPN clients as well.

5 out of 5 eggs2 ZyXel USG20W Devices

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: This is a highly configurable device. The wireless disconnects others report has not happened on either of the 2 usg20w devices that I purchased. Wireless 100% ok here. The interface is quite fast and the dashboard reports cpu and memory usage which comes in handy for me. Using and configuring multiple ssids is a very nice feature. I have connected multiple laptops and several android devices with no issues.

Cons: Casing is plastic. I like metal casing for network gear.

Other Thoughts: I have only had the my zyxel devices for a couple days but have had no issues with multiple continual network tests, wireless and wired. I set one of these up for a company 2 months ago and was quite taken with it. The company has not had any issues with their network since the purchase. The company does use the wireless connection on many devices.

These usg 20w devices are not for people that want to plug it in and be done. Bridging lan with wireless for instance is quick and easy with advanced knowledge of networking but a novice would need a youtube video walk through. I really and still in awe of the object orientated configuration and capabilities for sub $200 device.

5 out of 5 eggsConsistently Excellent

This review is from: ZyXEL ZyWALL ZWUSG20W 802.11n Wireless Internet Security Firewall with 4 Gigabit LAN / DMZ Ports, 2 IPSec VPN, SSL VPN , and 3G WAN Support

Pros: As an update to my review posted several months back, the USG20W guy just keeps on trucking, consistently and reliably. Deployed in a home office environment for a client, a small business which really doesn't have the time or the first-hand knowledge to be troubleshooting their networking gear. They just need something that simply works and works well -- and that's exactly what you get with a USG -- provided, of course, that you've updated to a new enough firmware version. This particular unit has been working well on version 3.00(BDR.2)C0 for quite some time now. The only thing that seems to bring it down are occasional power surges, which plague the electrical circuitry of the old house where it's installed. If it were not for the surges, I would expect to see several hundred-day uptimes from this thing between resets - no joke. It's nice to have a mission-critical option at the ready for clients who demand it, but would prefer not to spend into the high hundreds or low thousands for Cisco, Juniper, etc.

Cons: The sheer magnitude of the interface along with its heavy browser weight is often enough to deter many novices -- myself included at first. It *definitely* takes some time getting used to, regardless of your knowledge level, as a first-time user. Once you get the hang of this thing, though, routine actions and deployments become much faster, if not outright automated (settings export/import, command-line, etc).

Other Thoughts: Reviewers who knock this thing for being too complex or having poor this or that (much of which is completely mitigated with proper setup) could perhaps gain quite a bit of insight by stepping back and understanding the level of device that they're getting themselves into here. This is *not* a consumer-class product series (at least it doesn't appear to be the goal with the USG series). As such, in the world of networking especially, newbies need not apply, or if they do, they must understand and be ready to invest the time into actually learning networking terminology, proper networking setups and how they are achieved with the USG. Once that is done, I would anticipate many 1-egg and 2-egg reviews would turn into 4 or 5-egg reviews.
