1 out of 5 eggsOverheated and died

Pros: Worked very well for a few months

Cons: One day it just wouldn't turn on. The unit was very hot and it sounded like the harddrive was still spinning, but it would not connect to network and no lights would illuminate on the front.

Other Thoughts: Very disappointed at its short life, and now its too late to RMA. Hopefully it didn't kill my harddrive that was in it too.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hardware

Pros: For the money you get a very robust file server that is very compatible with Mac, PC, Linux (but the utility is only good for PC). The Media server is also compatible with my PS3. I'm very happy with this device!

Cons: ONLY 1 BAY So keep your irreplaceable files on your local machine!

The server OS isn't very smart and lets you reuse names and screws up permissions.Make sure you avoid naming the device the same thing as the volume or share.

Doesn't automatically redirect to HTTPS on the web interface if you force SSL.

Mostly for Personal use, wouldn't share the device with others, you will notice a significant performance decrease.

Other Thoughts: ZyXEL products are really much better then I thought! Go ZyXEL!

4 out of 5 eggsServes its purpose

Pros: Easy to access admin interface
Disable/Enable individual functions and add/remove feature "packages"
All the features I need, media server, NFS, SMART

Cons: Gets hot quickly
CPU is easily overloaded which seems to slow transfer speed significantly

Other Thoughts: Had a few issues with certain file types and the media server but I think it is related to the CPU so I will try again when it is not copying files.

5 out of 5 eggsNice system with poor ventilation

Pros: DLNA/Twonky streams to both my Sony Blu-Ray player and my Samsung smart TV. This thing works well w/ a quiet 3TB toshiba HDD.

Cons: Poorly ventilated (as delivered). The 40mm fan made some noise, pushed a little air, but did not last long. maybe 1 week. The NSA started to run hot, then it overheated, alarmed, and then shut down with fan failure. CPU was not damaged.

Other Thoughts: I loved how well this thing worked, when it "worked". After the junky stock fan died, I got out the jigsaw and dremel, cut a 3" hole in the side adjacent to the Marvel cpu. I glued a hefty heatsink directly to the CPU w/ arctic alumina, I silicon-sealed an 80mm fan over the new 3" sideport. I threw away the 40mm fan. I barely hear the HDD when it wakes up, (nice Toshiba/Hitachi HDD) and the CPU never climbs above 34C during sustained transfers. I have ordered a 2nd NSA unit. This thing needed some minor cooling tweaks, but it "serves" me perfectly now. This things serves movies and music to my BluRay, and any networked device in my home. sweet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS, Love it.

Pros: I have had a number of these small NAS systems, this is the best one I have found so far. You can setup a private cloud via Polkast, great software and great product. It has fast transfer rates and works flawlessly.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsGood NAS, Good Price

Pros: I haven't had chance to take advantage of most functions, but for what it's worth (literally) don't hesitate to buy it. Interface is not intuitive but not obstructive either. Some additional functionality can be added through online community sources.

Cons: none

Pros: Simple interface, supports VMWare ESXi NFS datastores.

Cons: None... so far

Other Thoughts: Setup two units for backup rotation. Works very well for the setup.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat find!

Pros: Easy to setup, intuitive web interface with many options, Twonky media server, use any hard drive you want, fast transfer speeds, Gigabit Ethernet, small, quiet, inexpensive. I didn't even need to use the software, just the web interface.

Cons: I haven't found any cons.

Other Thoughts: I had a WD MyBook World 2TB that bit the dust. The WD web interface said that the 2TB HDD was having SMART errors. So I removed the drive and ran WD Data Life Guard and confirmed that the drive had issues. I wiped the drive and used a hack tutorial to install Debian and put it back together. It worked for about 3 months and stopped. This time the MyBook World controller board must have died because it wouldn't boot up anymore.

That's when I found this awesome NAS enclosure. I threw the 2TB drive in and got it all set up. It has been running great for 2 months now. Zyxel's web interface says the drive is healthy, so it must not care about SMART errors. I really could care less if the drive fails, because I use it only as a backup for my desktop computer. I have GoodSync setup to backup my entire user folder and synchronize changes hourly. Now I can eek out all life left in the drive and delay purchasing a new drive while prices come down. It's the perfect setup.

To sweeten the deal, the built-in Twonky media server finds all my media and using BubbleUPnP I can stream anything to my Android tablet and Galaxy S3. I've even taken it over to friend's and relative's homes to stream stuff there since it has a copy of everything.

4 out of 5 eggsWOW!

Pros: Everything (read other thoughts)

Cons: Hard drive light doesn't indicate activity. Fan a tad noisy. Limited control over access rights.

Other Thoughts: Let me preface my review by saying this is only the 2nd NAS device I have ever laid my hands on. So I am not an expert on NAS devices.

Having said that I bought this unit to replace an aging Quantum Snap server. The Snap server is pretty old, therefore it has no media services or ap support. It was strictly a networked "storage tank", but did have built in web and ftp capabilities.

I bought the ZyXel because I have been impressed with their other products so far. Plus this unit is small, and I wanted a small footprint device.

Not only does the ZyXel have built in web and ftp servers (a must for my needs), but it also has a built in media server-Twonky Media. Athough I had never messed with them before, I actually have a few DLNA compliant devices-a couple bluray players and an Xbox 360. They see my movies and music and play fine. (I haven't tried the pictures yet). Have not had to reboot the unit. Its been up about a week now with no troubles. Overall, I am VERY pleased with this unit. I haven't done benchmarks, so I'm sure its not the fastest, but its LIGHT years faster than the Snap server it replaced, and the media server features was an unexpected bonus. Web and ftp servers work great. Overall I love this box. If I *had* to pick some negatives they are:

1) HD light stays green all the time. It appears more of a hard drive "go/no go" status indicator than anything. Wish it would indicate activity like in just about every other device I have seen.

2) Fan just a little noisy. Its not bad. This is just a nit-pick.

3) You cannot set access control rights on non-authenticated users. In other words, users HAVE to log in to allow complete control over their rights. Setting a share to "public" allows all local network users (even "guests") full read/write access, which is fine, BUT...if you enable anonymous ftp, and a folder is set to public, the anonymous ftp user can't DELETE anything, but they do have write access. Not a big deal, but thought I'd throw that out there. Also, my old snap NAS allowed you to set individual file/folder security; the zyxel does not, but again, not a big deal, as my former snap nas was aimed at the business sector, the zyxel the consumer sector, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

One last note: I did NOT use the enclosed software at ALL for anything other than finding out the ZyXel's initial DHCP assigned IP address. Once I knew that I closed out the included software, and configured everything through the web interface.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: Purchased this unit on sale from another on line vendor for $59.00 with free shipping. I like that you can change or upgrade the hard drive as the need arises unlike the WD NAS which was limited to a specific HD that has been discontinued and a replacement HD for it is very $$$$. The data transfer is faster than the WD NAS. I was expecting it to be a little noisy but it is pretty quiet considering it has a small fan in it. I installed a WD Black edition in the unit..

Cons: Not really exited with the software it comes with for data transfer.

Other Thoughts: After installing the hard drive, I updated the firmware and downloaded the latest software for it to initialize the HD and all went well. Transferred all my existing data from the WD NAS and could not be happier. I am using another software backup program to back up my PC and it is working just great. I would buy another one if needed.
