5 out of 5 eggsSurprisingly fast!

Pros: Purchased 8 of these as a secondary tablespace array for a postgres database server. (The primary being 8 Dell enterprise SSDs) Installed on a Dell R720 with a PERC H710 card, bonnie++ reports 917MB/s seq writes, 1207MB/s reads! That's actually slower than my SSD array's sequencial rate of 843MB/s write, 979MB/s read. But as expected, the random seek latency is about 38ms with these drives, compared to 10ms with SSDs. Also, WD warranty is awesome, I always buy WD for my servers.

Cons: My observed seek latency of 38ms is significantly slower than I expected. It's also very difficult to find the average seek time of these drives in WD's official specs. So far I only found a mention of 3.6ms on a UK website, but I'm not sure I believe that. (See other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: My numbers could be due to many factors, like RAID hardware, stripe size, partition alignment, etc, etc. Take it with a grain of salt. Running queries against large 12GB tables on this array still perform faster than my SSD array, so that says something. (I'm keeping my indexes on SSD still though) Also a heads up, if you stuff these in a Dell server the OSMA going to complain that they're not official Dell drives. They'll be in "warning" status indefinitely.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good drive but noisy.

Pros: Access time, transfer rate and everything is fast. I got between 150-215mb/sec depending were the data is on the platter. I was thinking of an SSD, I'm happy with the velociraptor, there is much more capacity. There is a reliabilty we almost can't find in other brands.

Cons: I found this drive a bit pricy, because there is a huge price step between wd black and velociraptor of the same size. The performance step between both drive isn't that big, so you paid for reliabilty but it's not all justified.

The second things and the major IMHO, this is noisy as hell. It always make strong noises, even I'm in the next room I hear this hard drive scratching.

Other Thoughts: Think about putting the computer case a bit away or insulate it sound proof if you work just aside. Like I said, it's noisy.

5 out of 5 eggsgot 5 of them for boot drives

Pros: Have purchased 5 of them exclusively for boot drives. Purchased them for business hence they do not show up on my personal account. They are quite awesome for a boot drive (read other...) No problems with the Raptors what so ever, no bad sectors, not DOA, all work as expected. All passed my rigorous 24h stress test with flying colors...! I torture new mechanical drives with 'butterfly' reads/writes for 24h, then run extended surface scans before declaring them good to use for production.

Cons: None I can tell except the ungodly price for 1TB mechanical drive...

Other Thoughts: Have tested them against SSD's for booting Windows 7, there is a definite difference in boot time with the Raptors being slower. This was to satisfy my curiosity and it is FYI for you: SSD's allowed that Quad Core PCs to boot in ~10 secs, these Raptors took ~20s, WD Black took ~50s to boot, regular 7200rpm drive took well over a minute.

I still do not like the limited number of writes on SSD's...! I may be excessively suspicious, BUT ~3,000 write cycles for a MLC cell scares the socks out of me (with TRIM enabled, it is even less that that...)

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: Not expensive, FAST!!!, does what it says on the label. Low DOA rate, in my experience.

Cons: Doesn't automatically install itself. Has no feet or hands.

Other Thoughts: I've been working as a programmer and system manager for over 25 years. When I say I've got "5 - High" tech knowledge, I'm not full of hot air.

If you can't be bothered to read the specs, you should expect to be disappointed with the results you get. Look, the industry is moving to the 2.5" format. It allows for more disks in the same amount of space. Yes, it won't fit in a laptop. No one said it would. It also spins at 10K RPM, which a laptop is unlikely to support even if you could get it in one. Think heat dissipation. Think your laptop can deal with the heat this drive must emit? Don't fool yourself. I haven't measured the heat from this drive, but it's going to be more than a 5400 RPM disk.

Now, for those who could use a helpful suggestion, here's some for free. This drive is for a 2.5" bay/sled. THIS drive, the CHTZ, is NOT for a 3.5" bay. It works well for what it's intended for.

If you want a 3.5" version, get the DHTZ for something like $20 less. Just never remove it from the heat sink! You'll void your warranty. They've got a warranty sticker over one of the DHTZ's screws. The DHTZ's heat sink is pretty significant, so buying the cheaper product just to throw away the heat sink is wasteful, and since it ends your 5 year warranty, is pointless. If you want cheaper, less warranty, and 2.5", get a DIFFERENT DRIVE ENTIRELY. I'm not going to recommend another model, as that's YOUR fun, and I won't take it away from you. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive but needs 12 volts!

Pros: Fast, small

Cons: 12 volts required. Most laptops and "optical Drive bays" only provide 5 volts.

5 out of 5 eggsno heatsink - designed for servers

Pros: only way to get SAS-like performance in a low-end server with Intel or other host-RAID controller that only supports SATA. Also, consumes less power than a comparable SAS drive.

Cons: costs more than the model with heatsink kit? I'm guessing this has to do with expected warranty claims as these bare drives are likely to be subjected to heavier use and potentially not cooled as well.

Other Thoughts: if you're buying this for your workstation, you need to have a fan-cooled hard drive bay. If mounting in 3.5" bay, better to stay silent and save money and get the model that comes with a heatsink.

** This is perfect match for a 4-bay 2.5" hot-swap enclosure from iStarUSA. The 6-bay enclosures don't have enough height to mount these drives.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and cool

Pros: So far it boots a lot faster than my WD Caviar Black 1Tb. It runs at 34* C when writing and reading my installations after boots. Runs 34-37* when playing games. Solid construction. Cool looking. It runs as loud as the Caviar Black 1Tb.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I plan on buying a second one of these and an ssd so that I can have a safer and higher performance disk drives through raid configurations. These would be excellent. They read fast and stay cool

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Correction

Pros: -Extremely fast
-Fair price for what you get
-Large storage capacity
-It is and it does exactly what the advertisement says "Enterprise" should automatically tell you "for servers and workstations, not for laptops"

Cons: -Does not come with the WD Icepack Heat-sink Mounting Kit, so it will most likely require a mounting bracket, but the advertisement clearly states this: "BARE DRIVE"

Other Thoughts: This is another balancing review. I own an older, first generation VelociRaptor with SATA III and a 74GB capacity. I bought it for next to nothing just to give the 10,000 RPM thing a try. I was amazed by the drive's ability to keep up with, and in the case of re-write speeds, surpass my (older) SSD's performance. The previous person should not have given the PRODUCT a bad review when it is the WEBSITE who made a misrepresentation. These drives rock! Furthermore, once again, we have someone who has given themselves a 5, or "High" rank in tech knowledge (only electrical engineers and those as educated should be doing this,) yet he/she is claiming one must be "very careful" not to order the wrong thing when it should be very clear upon first glance (even to someone with average Tech Knowledge) that this is not a laptop drive.

3 out of 5 eggsItem is in the wrong catagory

Pros: It looks like a great drive and provides lots of storage + speed for a small price.

Cons: This is NOT a Laptop drive. It is found under laptop internal drives but it is not it required a heatshield that actually makes it a 3.5'' dive. If you are not paying very close attention you will have to RMA your order too.

Other Thoughts: I would bet it works great on desktops.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD VelociRaptor 1TB Enterprise hard drive, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
While these drives have a 2.5 inch form factor, they require the Heat Sink (Ice Pack) which make these drives actual form factor 3.5 inch or desktop drives. These are ideal for High-performance computing, 3D rendering, digital content creation and editing.
You may want to consider the WD Black Mobile drive, which is a 7200 RPM performance-based drive, in the 2.5" form factor.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Amazing drive! i have had it for over a year now and the read and write speeds are incredible! It is almost as fast as my SSD! A great drive for any computer. (Except laptops, LOL.)

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: Why yes i do have other thoughts, thank you. So yeah, i do not know what he was thinking, or if he was.
