3 out of 5 eggsEasy setup but far from advertised speeds.

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit

Pros: Super easy setup. It really couldn't get any simpler. Plug into wall and either hook it up to your router and your pc. Easy as that. Instantly recognized the other adapter in a couple rooms away.

Cons: Far below advertised speeds. I have the Linksys WMP600N on the same PC and my speeds have always been good but living in an apartment building it is starting to get cluttered with everyone having a wireless router. I wanted to try these out to see if I could get both stability and speed without having to rely on my wireless card. While my wireless card can cap out around 75 mbps across my personal network these powerline adapters could only manage 30 mbps at their best. I tried changing outlets and setting them up again but no luck. My average speed was around 15 mbps. I suppose if you are desperate and have no other option these may work but for the 100 dollar price tag I think they aren't worth it. I will be returning these as soon as possible.

Other Thoughts: These may work in a brand new apartment or in a new house but in my apartment I had absolutely no luck getting what I would call "good speeds for the money".

5 out of 5 eggsas close as Gigabit that you can get

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit

Pros: The change from wireless to wired with this device is notable and seamless. (almost) GB all the way.

Cons: Because I do not have cable I use over the air antenna and this device interfieres with the signal somehow. Not a big deal and it is not related with the speed or the network connection.

Other Thoughts: if you want a wired connection and you have GB all the way to your NIC card then this is the way to go.

3 out of 5 eggsA Little Less than Expected

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit

Pros: New AV2 technology with a gigabit port gives theoretically superior speeds.

Cons: Like all powerline kits, real world speed really depends on your own setup.

Other Thoughts: Be careful about your needs. Based on the reviews I read for this, I was expecting network speeds exceeding 200mbps. However, I've only been able to get about 125mbps on my LAN.

It's enough to stream any sort of HD content, but if you've got demanding network requirements, this probably isn't the best out there. But then again, if those are your needs, you'd best be running a wire anyway.

This kit meets my needs perfectly, but I am disappointed I couldn't get much past the 100mbps mark. So, I am only giving this three eggs.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes AV1 products reduce throughput?

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit

Pros: I know--not a forum.

Cons: Not a forum.

Other Thoughts: Can you connect a pair of your AV1 products into the same network (security code) and see if the PLEK500 performance goes down?

I am not yet ready to replace every connection with AV2 products. I have also found grounded versions of Homeplug AV to provide better performance than the two prong versions.

Thanks

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible !!!

This review is from: LINKSYS PLEK500 Powerline HomePlug AV2 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet Kit

Pros: If you want the short version BUT THESE they are awesome !!!

If you want the explanation here it is. My goal was to send large files (1.25 – 2.0 GB) mp4 and mkv to my media server that is upstairs in my house. My PC that is used to create these files is downstairs and cutting up the walls to run Ethernet is not an option. First I tried every form of wireless (N150, N300, N900 & even AC) all the wirelees was great for surfing and sending a few MP3’s to the media server. All the wireless SUCKED with movie transfers and copying my itunes folder to the server (40gb)

Finally I tried Powerline. Got a set of 200mbps (different brand and they worked well) a movie would transfer in 6 – 7 minutes but it was slow to web surf while this was occurring. I saw that Linksys released the first AV2 spec powerline and thought let’s try them out.

A movie now transfers in 2 – 2.5 min (and no lag while surfing and transferring at the same time). Connecting speed is between 210 mbps to 240 mpbs. Having used both 100 megabit Ethernet and eventually gigabit Ethernet in my previous home I’d place the transfer rate on these as substantial faster than 100 megabits and not as fast as gigabit. Note: these are observations not measured throughput, however I have observed a lot of networks so I am confident is stating that if you are looking for powerline adapter that can move some serious data, these should not disappoint. The PLEK 500 is expensive, but it’s also the only AV2 spec kit available – as with automobiles speed doesn’t come cheap.

Cons: The PLEK 500 is expensive

Other Thoughts: the first AV2 spec powerline - closest to wired GB Ethernet I could file
