3 out of 5 eggsMixed success

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Power consumption
Low noise
4TB

Cons: Reliability

Other Thoughts: I have been running six Samsung 2TB Spinpoints for five years, and had one drive fail a few months ago. I miss that level of reliability.
Seagate bought them out -- someone wake me up when it's worth buying their drives again, my experience with Seagate is that their drives all last <1yr.

From a reliability perspective, HGST is supposed to be king, and if the Reds turn out to be horribly unreliable over the long-term, I may bite the bullet, but the HGST NAS drives are not cool, quiet drives. The layout of my room has my NAS less than a meter away, and I'm planning to go to an 8-bay model for video editing. The HGST drives would give me slightly higher throughput, but that would be mainly lost in a 10gbe setup. The extra noise is not worth the tradeoff/headache.

Nothing beats those wonderful 1TB Spinpoints when it comes to noise (aside from really expensive SSDs :>), but the Reds aren't too far back -- and the Reds have the spinpoints beat on startup noise for sure!

The real problem with the Reds, as you've no doubt noticed from the reviews, is their reliability. I have thus far ordered seven of them. Two of them I've had on alternate backup duty for something like a year now, while five new ones have been here about a week. I ran the five through HDDScan, and one of them died straight off (spins up, but doesn't latch on). Another of them died during a read scan on 31 sectors. A reboot, a pass through WD's diagnostics tools, and several scan tests later and all seems fine. I plan to mark the drive to see if this was a warning or a transient. I figure I'm running at about a 20% failure rate, which is really two orders of magnitude higher than ought to be accepted.

Aside from reliability, I'm interested in how the drives will work in a NAS. They're supposed to be happy in that environment, but what I'm seeing is very high variability in read speeds. Some drives read really fast. The drive that died was getting over 170kps, most of the drives get around 164kps at the outer rim. My questionable drive is making more like 155kps. In a NAS enclosure, I expect to run at the slowest drive's rate, and I wonder if I should pick and choose to get a good matched set. The variability is quite surprising to me.

3 out of 5 eggspoor packaging

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: 4TB

Cons: Lousy packaging by NewEgg, they were shipped in a box with very little padding around the drives and each drive was in the OEM bubble pack but the one end is essentially open and 2 of the 4 drives were partially out of the bubble pack. The bubble pack does not protect the outside edges of the drive so with the lack of padding around the drives they were free to move around inside the box. The top of the box flaps were taped but did not line up so even the taping job was sub par. I'm testing them now but doubt they will all pass...time will tell.

I will update this review after testing is final.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems Here...

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Reliable, Quiet, and Fast...what more could one expect from a NAS HDD?

Cons: Nothing so far in over a year....

Other Thoughts: I have been using this exact model drive in my QNAP TS Pro series 2 bay NAS housing a total of 3 TB of movies that serve PLEX on 2 HDTV's in my house, 1 at my parent's house remotely, and my laptop on the road. I have had no issues to date. I constantly write large files (over 50GB each time) to the drive almost daily. Media is served daily through PLEX (only form of TV for me now), no noises from drives, no latency, and certainly no failures. I do not understand how so many on this site can complain about this product unless perhaps NewEgg.com had a "bad" batch of drives in their shipping warehouse, or the people on here complaining simply ordered them from another site altogether, either way....WD has always been my first choice for HDD's and Toshiba my very last with Seagate towards the latter.

2 out of 5 eggsBought 4 - 1 failed on first day

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Big

Cons: Failure rate is not acceptable. Loaded in a RAID 10 and one of four disks immediate showed a failure

Other Thoughts: Not sure if this Red line is all that it is cracked up to be.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Donald, it is unfortunate that you have experienced a drive failure. Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses, and for this reason it is unfortunate that you have received a dead on arrival drive. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives and great Newegg support

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: These are great drives for NAS/RAID (not super high performance, but generally reliable). I ordered several, and had one DOA, which Newegg replaced promptly.

Cons: Expensive when not on sale.

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Price

Cons: Not reliable

Other Thoughts: I will see if I can return drive for replacement.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Alex, we appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the Western Digital RED, as this is not the typical experience with the product. Our drives are all rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before leaving our warehouse. There are many variables that could affect the drives integrity between leaving our warehouses prior to being installed in a computer. We recommend installing and running our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows (WinDLG) utility for Windows users, or running Disk Utility for Mac users. Information regarding our WinDLG utility and Disk utility can be found at the following link.

Regardless of the reason for your drives defect, we stand by our product, and would like to replace your drive for you directly, no questions asked, and investigate to determine the root cause of the failure.

1 out of 5 eggs50% Failure Rating

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: 4TB of space when they work.

Cons: Of the 6 that I originally bought 3 of them are RMA. One had the click of death and the other two were reallocate errors galore. Your mileage may vary.

Other Thoughts: Do yourself a favor and pick another drive for a peace of mind.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsWD Red 4TB - 2 ordered - 1 DOA

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: None

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: I'd been through the reviews and saw some stating Newegg was shipping product with old firmware and some DOA right out of the box. I really didn't think I'd be writing the same review, but here I am. Two 4TB Red ordered. One is DOA! Totally disappointed in myself for thinking it wouldn't happen to me, NewEgg for continuing to ship these defective units, and last but not least ... WD!

1 out of 5 eggsfailed in 2 months

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Purchased 2 for a Synology 214+ NAS. One drive failed in less than 2 months. Was my first WD purchase and surely my last. Never had any issues whatsoever with Seagate or Hitachi in the past.

Cons: Failure rate high

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsRunning strong

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: I have had 3 of these running in my Synology NAS for about a year now and have had exactly 0 problems.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Obviously, these are going to be louder, slower, and hotter than an SSD, but when it comes to something like a NAS, reliability is the name of the game and these have done very well so far. (That's not to say that these are particularly loud, slow or hot; they aren't.)
