5 out of 5 eggsHappy customer

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Solid, good price tag, long lasting.

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: I have 3 x 3TB Toshiba HDDs, 2 of them for backing up and 1 for daily use. Although the backup ones are not powered up much and the daily one I just bought recently but I think they will last for good amount of time. My last one 3TB Seagate threw me errors and asking to backup/replace after just 2 years of use. None of my WDs have done that to me. Toshiba is good too. Highly recommend if you can get them when on sale.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: I do a lot of video recording and editing and needed to upgrade over my WD Blue 1Tb drive.

Not only is this drive triple the storage of my old drive but after testing its actually faster and at less than twice the cost. 185 MB/sec vs 158 MB/sec write speed.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Simple to install like any other SATA drive.

3 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 good

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Good performance. Coping 2.5TB of data averaged 120MB/sec from a source Seagate 3TB drive.

Seems to run cool even at 7200 RPM in a tight space with normal airflow.

Cons: One of the drives died after one day. I was careful to full-format both and copy data to them, after which I checked SMART for any errors, which there were none on either drive.

Other Thoughts: Interestingly, the failure of the 2nd drive was instant and total. I heard repeated click seeking sounds, and then Windows froze from lack of drive access. After reboot, the drive doesn't show up in the BIOS or Windows. I wasn't able to use my normal drive recovery tools as the drive could not be identified.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter Than Expected... so far

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: First thing's First. 2.72TB in Windows is the right size for a 3TB drive. Windows lists "Tebibytes" but calls them "Terabytes" ...

The difference is Tebibytes are 1024 Gibibyes, Which are 1024 Mebibytes, which are 1024 Kibibytes, which are 1024 Bytes.

Terabytes are 1000 Gigabytes, which are 1000 Megabytes, 1000 Kilobytes, 1000 Bytes...

So 2.72 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 2,990,671,627,550.72 ... or just a hair under 3TB (some lost in formatting and/or decimal rounding)

So before you complain about the size not actually being 3TB, know that if Windows lists it as 2.72TB (Which should actually be listed as 2.72TiB) then it is 3TB

Anyway...

+ Faster than WD green/red/purple
+ Cheaper than most 3TB drives
+ Quiet
+ No errors or issues out of the box
+ 3 Year Warranty

Cons: - Heated up quick (see other thoughts)
- No Cables or Screws included (Minor con)

Other Thoughts: After testing, I put this in an external bay built in to the top of my PC case and proceeded to load this thing with 2TB of movies. HW monitor showed it heating up to 45c while my other drives that were inside the case and had fans blowing on them were between 34c and 38c... I aimed a small fan set on low at the drive, and within a few minutes it was under 40c.

One nice thing is how quiet it was. This was 2 feet from my head, completely exposed, and I never heard it at all. Loaded everything with no problem, then I put it in my HTPC, and with the airflow in there, and the fact that I won't be stressing it with 2TB of a data dump again, I am not worried about the temps...

So far, I recommend this drive

5 out of 5 eggsGood solid drive

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Lots of storage, good price and reliable. I have 3 toshiba 3tb drives 1 I bought over a year ago and still running strong the rest are still fairly new but I expect them to last for a couple of years or until I need to upgrade to a bigger drive.

Cons: Doesn't come with any accessories

Other Thoughts: This drive is not plug n play please bring it to a professional if you don't know how to properly format this drive I'm tired of reading all the negative reviews of people saying it shows only 764gb when installed that's because you don't know how to properly format this drive so stop embarrassing yourself and bring it to a professional to install it for you a properly formatted drive should show 2.72tb

It clearly shows 3 years warranty on the box on the anti-static bag and on the warranty paper that comes with the box so I just debunked a couple of fake reviewers for you guys. And no I do not work for toshiba or any of its affiliates just tired of reading reviews of people whining cause they don't know how to properly install drives and are illiterate.

Like any other product buy it and try it for yourself don't buy it or skip it because of reviews.

4 out of 5 eggsQuite Relianble and Fast

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: So far quite reliable. Fast. Works well in QNAP NAS servers.

Cons: OEM Drives are more prone to DOA or quick failure, but the Retail Boxed units are good.

Other Thoughts: These drives come in 1, 2, and 3 TB sizes. I have 6 of the 2 TB drives in one NAS unit, and 8 of the 3 TB in another NAS. The 2 TB drives are several years old and are performing flawlessly; the 3 TB are less than a year, but so far have shown no reliability issues. I always reserve 1 drive in each NAS as a hot spare in case of a drive failure, but so far have not needed to use it. At this price, I'm getting an extra to use as a replacement in case any of the live disks fails.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty reliable overall

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: I've had pretty good luck with these drives, I have 6 of them (total) split between two different servers. One of them is a rackmount 4U server with a 3 x 5.25 -> 5 x 3.5 bay enclosure added in, another case just has built in slide rails that lock the drives in place. They've been running smooth since September/November 2013 in 24 x 7 operation and have handled multiple terabytes of data being written/read.

In the one server they are part of a RAID-6 array along with some WD Red 3TB's, and in the 8 drive array I can typically get several hundred MB/s read speeds (yes, that's MB, not Mb).

Cons: One of the drives I had set aside as a spare, so was never actually used. It failed after 2 months of actual usage. Toshiba was good about the returns process (was able to request RMA online, everything went smooth) but I hate having to pay for shipping when a part breaks within the warranty period.

Other Thoughts: Realize that failures like this can happen with any drive from any manufacturer. The replacement drive they shipped me has been up and running for at least 6 months now, no problems. In addition to the other 5 that have not failed, i'd say the odds are pretty good. I just ordered another one.

5 out of 5 eggs15 months and no issues

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: I've been using this as a storage drive for video files in a media PC for over 15 months and it's been working flawlessly. The retail box is the way to go with this one, as I've seen far more complaints about the bare drive (probably due to it being damaged in shipping due to it having less protection). The 3 year warranty is also nice (though I've seen horror stories about Toshiba's RMA process, it's more the fact that the company seems confident about the drive life more than anything).

Cons: There is no Toshiba drive utility program like Seagate's SeaTools or WD's diagnostics, so I couldn't do a full drive diagnostic on it when I got it as I do with all my drives. Instead, I did a Windows full format (not quick format), which should pick up any problems, and it went fine. Still, I would like to see Toshiba create an actual drive utility that works with this drive so you can test it from a boot disc or bootable USB.

Other Thoughts: With larger hard drives (>2 TB) generally receiving terrible reviews lately, it's hard to find one that's reliable. HGST seems to get the most positive reviews for bigger drives, but their prices are way above the others. I think this drive (retail only) is about as good as it gets in affordable large storage.

1 out of 5 eggsS.M.A.R.T. Failure in 6 months

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: None

Cons: Nothing good to say. Drive lasted 6 months before smart failure. Not fond of having to pull the screen on a iMac to replace the drive or do another restore. Toshiba has some quality control issues with as many failures on the these drives. Even if I do an RMA I don't want another one of these drives so lets see what happens.
