5 out of 5 eggsIt isn't a retail kit. Just a bare drive.

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Fast, large and cheap.

Cons: I had to use Acronis disk manager to partition the drive to full capacity. Windows 7 storage manager would get it done for me. A retail kit comes with software, cables, mounting brackets and screws. Toshiba has got the message yet.

Other Thoughts: I am very pleased with the drive. This is the second Tosiba that I bought and both are running fine.

1 out of 5 eggsGet it if you have time to waste

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: The low price for a 3tb drive(which is the result of a poor product)

Cons: Well, I bought the drive thinking this will be easy to install. Nope. Windows sees it as 750gb. It seems a lot of people are having the same problem as I am. So, I go to the Toshiba site to see if they can help. All their support seems to be pay as you go. So, I go to see If I can get support on the drive and the place where you enter in the SN keeps telling me it's invalid. It's not worth the hassle.

5 out of 5 eggsThey're In There

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Competitive price, good spec's, better rated than most of the other 3 TB drives.

Cons: See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Drives are too new to really say anything about them one way or the other. Bought them for a simple raid mirror. My SSD crashed and then was unbootable after installation (this happened twice). Replaced the SSD, and didn't have anymore issues.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Price was good for 3 ter drive

Cons: To update my previous review the drive completely failed after 4 days of use. Not even enough warning to save data if I had not backed up. Now waiting for RMA return.

Other Thoughts: I will be without the drive for two and a half weeks while it goes to CA, gets processed and comes back .I will also be without the money I spent for shipping to return a defective product I had only 3 days plus the hassle. Not such a good deal after all.

5 out of 5 eggsRemember to "Initialise" it Before Use

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: You must Initialise the hard drive or it won't show up in Windows. Right-click on Computer (or My Computer or This PC) and select "Manage". In the Management window select "Storage" then select "Disk Management" or similar words. Wait several seconds while Windows scans for hard drives. Your new hard drive will likely show up as "Unallocated". At any rate, it will be 3TB capacity (which is 2.72TB after you format it). Right-click on the Unallocated space and set up the drive in one or more partitions. You can also Format the drive here; choosing Full Format instead of Quick allows Windows to scan the drive for any bad sectors and deal with them. Anyway, after Initialising and creating one or more partitions, you can exit Computer Management. I suggest a reboot at this point to be on the safe side. After reboot, your new drive should show up in Windows.

Cons: A retail box should include screws and a SATA cable.

Other Thoughts: Some reviewers say they received multiple drives that were Dead On Arrival. They probably didn't realise the drives need to be Initialised before they show up in Windows with a drive letter, etc.

I wish manufacturers would provide users with a BIG, CLEAR warning label to Initialise and Format the drive before use!

1 out of 5 eggsDOA X 2

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Good price point

Cons: DOA DOA DOA

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these drives and upon arrival both were DOA returned them both for two more again DOA on both drives. Now I can not return them and have to go through the manufacturer, I would not by another drive from Toshiba if they were offered for free. Cutting my losses and ordering Seagate's from another online retailer. Don't buy these drives!!

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: It's a hard drive. Once I got past some installation issues, it seems to work just fine.

Cons: Toshiba Tech Support totally SUCKS.

Retail box item came with no mounting screws, power cable or SATA cable.

Since I was buying a "Retail Kit", I expected mounting screws, a power connector and a SATA cable. Upon opening the box, the only thing there was a bare drive. Fortunately, I had some mounting screws and a spare SATA cable. I had to unplug my Firewire power connector to hook up the new drive.

I had issues having the drive recognized by Windows and all Toshiba could do was suggest I call the computer manufacturer. See other thoughts

Since this procedure has to used every time you install a new drive, you would think that Toshiba would know about it and provide a tutorial or video on the subject. There is no reason the tech support people should not know this stuff.

Rant Over. Move along...nothing to see here.

see other thoughts to find out how to fix the problem.

Other Thoughts: I'm using Windows 7 64bit operating system. Once installed, the bios recognized the drive right away, but Windows would not recognize it.

Toshiba Tech Support told me to contact the computer manufacturer since it was not their problem. They SUCK at the tech support business.

It turned out that once you install the drive, you have to click on the start button and then Right click on the "Computer" button and choose manage.

Once the "Computer Management" window opens, double click on the "Storage" icon in the center pane and then double click on the "Disk Management(Local)" icon, again in the center pane.

A list of all the hard drives the bios / Windows found displays. Go to the bottom center pane and find your new drive. It will be marked as "not initialized". Select the drive, right click it and select initialize.

If your drive is larger than 2tb, then select the NTFS and GUID options and it will create a partition utilizing the entire drive. My drive is "3tb" and my drive's capacity is 2794gb..

Once the drive is initializes, you can format it, name it and assign any unused drive letter in the disk management window.

5 out of 5 eggsStill holding up strong

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Properly packed (compared to bare)
High transfer rates
Reliable
Did I mention reliable?
Very low DOA rate

Cons: None thus far

Other Thoughts: I normally do not write reviews but with several of another companies model drive dying on me all the sudden, I felt compelled to review the drive that i use in the other half of my array.

Currently have probably 12+ of these drives (bare and retail) in my network for several years now, no complaints. I use them either for straight Windows or are in a ZFS array for storage.

My suggestion is DO NOT go with the bare drives. Price might seem better but I've had more DOA's due to ordering OEM drives than retail. This is in part due to the lack of sufficient shipping materials to maintain the drives integrity.

All in all, a great drive!

4 out of 5 eggsToshiba 3 ter

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Price was good. Toshiba packed in foam sleeve to pretect drive which was good because Newegg did not provide much additional shipping protection.

Cons: This is a 3 ter drive which came partitioned into a one ter and 2 ter section from toshiba. I tried repeatedly to reformat and partition into a single 3 ter using windows software and it appeared to work but when the window was closed it went back to a 2/1 ter partition. I even used a professional partitioning software ( Easeus partition master ) Which did not work. The only thing that worked establishing it as a single partition 3 ter was adding it to my server 2011 as the server backup drive and let windows do the partitioning. That was not my original intention for the drive but was better than the hassle and delay of returning fro replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 39 Days

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3300U-1I72 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Free paperweight now

Cons: Started making clicking sounds three days ago, unable to mount anymore. BIOS doesn't even recognize it anymore.

Other Thoughts: Can't return it, can't get a refund. Not happy at all having a $100 paperweight. What a piece of junk.
