5 out of 5 eggsJust works

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: Just wire it with CAT6 / plug it into an outlet (not power strip) / hook CAT6 to switch / run CAT6 to PC - now have ethernet connections where there wasn't an ethernet connection.

Cons: Nothing so far

5 out of 5 eggsSolid addition to home network

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: Uses the newest HomePlug AV2 standard so speeds seem consistently closer to 100 Mbps or above on my network. There is a utility which you can install which will give you transfer speeds between the various devices. You can grab the latest version off the Zyxel website. I am noticing higher throughput compared to competitors PowerLine 500 devices. This unit allows you to not waste an outlet. It will also operate with other competitors HomePlug AV (older spec) units. I find this a satisfactory replacement for areas of poor WiFi on my property. That includes both N and the newer AC standards. Streaming media, online console gaming, and file transfer all work very reliably with this deployed as your network transport.

Cons: As other reviewers have pointed out the overlap of the casing is semi-large and it will be a tight fit for you to use the second outlet. Probably anything with a ground will be a tight fit. 2 prong plugs should fit without much problem.
The Zyxel utility is rather spartan. I have used other manufacturers utils and they seem more full featured.
Single port only model for this. No 4 Port units available for their Powerline 600 product line. You need to go with the older Powerline 500 for multi-port, which is also a good product.

Other Thoughts: I don't often hand out the 5 Star (or Egg) rating for products but I feel this has earned it. Ease of use, speed, and reliability combine to make this an excellent product. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well but bulkier than expected

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: Speed is excellent, I have "wired" my whole house and the speed is constant and transfer rate is excellent. The fact that this is a pass-thru adapter is also great as you don't waste a wall socket, especially given the fact of it's bulkiness...

Cons: The only issue I have with this unit is that it is bulky and you can hardly plug anything else is the second wall socket as this unit pushes it out. I have found that it's almost impossible to hook-up a 3 prong cable on the first wall socket once this unit is connected but the 2 prongs works fine.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks, but Misleading

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: Allowed TV to access Network where Wi-Fi Signal was weak

I need to do further research, but I am told you can hook this to a wireless router to extend your Wi-Fi signal even further for mobile devices.

Cons: Advertised at 600 Mbps/sec at best I get 100 Mbps/sec. From what I researched several things can affect the transfer speed. Wall warts, to how the house is wired, to interference from other sources. Since I mainly wanted to stream Netflix and my incoming internet is only 15 Mbps/sec, this works well.

DOES NOT PREVENT YOU FROM WASTING AN OUTLET! I bought this specifically for the powerpass thru freature. However, the Engineers at ZyXEL are to stupid to figure out that the housing of the unit is too tall and you can not plug into the outlet above if your power cord had a 3-Prong Plug (which 90% of power cords do today).

Other Thoughts: I could do with the slower than advertised transfer rates, as all thing dealing with computers are rated on optimal conditions. However, the lack of field testing with the powerpass thru is unacceptable. Would have given 3 to 4 Eggs if not for that MAJOR oversite!

5 out of 5 eggsI'm a powerline convert!

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: Absolutely, positively crushes any wireless networking device I have ever used. Plug and play installation, works right away, and the speeds are fantastic. I'll never go back to wireless for any device with an ethernet jack!

Cons: NONE

5 out of 5 eggsNice upgrade

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: I bought these when they were on sale at a major discount to upgrade from my '200' megabit other-brand powerline adapters. I have to say I'm mostly pretty impressed. The previous ones had some noticeable performance issues when panning streaming movies and such. Those problems are all gone now. I can jump to wherever I want in a movie in XBMC and it starts playing instantly. So far reliability has been perfect.

Cons: They are kind of big, so despite having a pass-through you'll only be able to plug in one of them to a normal outlet, thus depriving you of a socket anyway. That said they work fine and there are some easy workarounds to the 'problem.'

Other Thoughts: Just a huge improvement. Also worked out of the box with my ZyXEL 500 Mbps 4-port powerline switch.

5 out of 5 eggsNice unit-one flaw

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: I've gone through 3 powerline upgrades over the years. I made the first try when the speed offering jumped up to 85 Mbps, then upgraded to 200 Mbps, and now 600 Mbps. I'm happy with the move to 600 Mbps. The speed increase is often noticeable. For Netflix, the loading bar starts off at the same speed as my 200 Mbps units, but then takes off like a rocket to finish the initial movie loading. Large file transfers are also faster. I didn't keep testing numbers, but real scenario "feel" is more important to me anyway.

The units worked with no setup other than plugging both units into wall sockets and connecting the router to one of them. They began working immediately without the need for pairing. My old Netgear 200 Mbpd 4-port AV module was even working with this new AV2 module. That was surprising as I was expecting maybe "compatibility" in terms of keeping both the Netgear AV and Zyxel AV2 transmitter modules working, but I had removed the Netgear AV transmit module to make room for the Zyxel AV2 module and the Netgear AV receive module was still working. Nice. I did have to reset my router the next morning to make the AV unit work again, but I didn't do that on initial setup so it was expected. I did have to reset the system again a week later to make the AV module work though the AV2 module continued to work. I may need to see if my AV module needs a firmware upgrade. It's not an issue for me as I will eventually buy another AV2 module to replace it.

My home wiring works fine using powerline. These AV2 modules fix wifi deadspots and unreliable wifi by using power outlets instead. Those experiencing trouble may have home wiring problems. I've read that your breaker type can even be an issue. I have breakers that are the "good" type. I've also read that using pass-through modules may help performance as the pass-through models have added filtering that may help the AV performance too. Just make sure to plug directly into the wall socker since there are reports that plugging into a filtering power strip can hurt performance. MOCA (cable tv) units are a good alternative if your home wiring doesn't work well with powerline tech and it keeps your wall sockets open.

Cons: I've only had the units for about a month and the only unexpected issue is that the units sit high enough in the wall socket that they block plugging in a grounded plug into the free wall sock. You can still plug in an ungrounded 2-prong plug, but not a 3-prong plug. That is an unfortunate design decision as there is ample space on the module to move its plug higher to give adequate clearance for full use of the upper wall socket. It seems the pass-through model must give you the pass-through since it blocks the upper socket anyway. I was hoping to use both my upper socket and the pass-through on the module. Fail. The unit works well enough otherwise that this flaw isn't work docking a star--but Zyxel-please fix it next time around.

Other Thoughts: I read some review saying the Zyxel was using AV2 technology, but the modules weren't fully utilizing the ground wire yet and that waits for new chips in shipping models. I haven't since located that review and I haven't verified that this model fully implements the AV2 standard using 3 wires, only that the unit is HomePlug AV2 compliant. Anyone have the facts? How about a review disabling the ground wire for performance comparison to itself with a ground and with a 500 Mbps system?

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: ZyXEL 600 Mbps Powerline AV2 Gigabit Pass-Thru Adapter, Starter Kit - 2 Units (PLA5215KIT)

Pros: Great design, plug and play. Very simple to use

Cons: None right now.

Other Thoughts: Have this connected from my router to the HDTV. My router is in the family room. Took a CAT5E cable over to the circuit breaker and tapped an outlet directly off of the living room circuit where the HDTV is located.

Connecting directly to the living circuit I am getting:
Transmit: 329 Mbps
Receive: 315 Mbps
File copy: 23MBps

Previous I had it connected from a family room outlet to the living room outlet (going through two breakers):
Transmit: 109 Mbps
Receive: 101 Mbps
File copy: 5.2 MBps
