4 out of 5 eggsKingston SSDNow V300

Pros: The Kingston SSDNow V300 seems to have been running excellently for two days now (Monday morning) after installation on Saturday afternoon. Its Sata3 performance resulted in a Windows Experience rating of 7.9 (up from a dismal 5.9 with my previous Sata2 drive). Installation went flawlessly, and I'm not really sure the provided drivers were necessary for Windows 7. It did require some engineering to fit this 2.5" drive into a standard 4" drive bay - even with the included adapter plate. It would probably work fine in an old 1.4MB floppy drive bay if your case still has one.

Cons: The Acronis True Image HD (drive cloning) software bundled with the SSD desktop upgrade kit may
work fine to clone an older platter drive to the solid state,
however three different attempts to clone in the opposite direction (SSD to either of two older platter drives) failed. Each failure started normally with 8 minutes showing as the expected time to finish, then just after reaching the 6 minute point it resulted in a complete system hang: the drive LED stopped blinking and the mouse cursor froze on the screen. Control-Alt-Delete would NOT recover from this, I had to remove power and restart each time. Additionally, in each case, the destination drive(s) showed no signs of data transfer, but instead had been wiped clean and drive letters were reassigned. Kingston tech support chat suggested using Macrium Reflect software (available for download from C/Net) - which seems to have done the cloning job, with the exception that the new (destination) drive was unbootable without using a Windows installation cd to repair it. It's working just fine, now (knock on formica).

Other Thoughts: The decision to bundle Acronis with this drive was possibly made by some marketting drone, and shouldn't reflect on Kingston. Other than the stated problems with Acronis, this drive is NICE!
