1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Nice price.

Cons: This drive worked just fine when first installed. I have one in 3 systems. However, after a few months time, the drive goes off-line, usually for 10 to 30 seconds. Now the problem has grown to the point where the system crashes or does not always boot.

Other Thoughts: For your own well being, DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue experienced with the V300 drive. We perform 100% testing on all of our products to ensure quality and reliability, detailed here: http://www.kingston.com/us/company/testing . Although even with thorough testing, all electronic components have a small chance of failure. However, if this is occurring with all three drives there may be something else going on. We are here to help and can troubleshoot with you to determine what may be causing the issue. For assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

2 out of 5 eggsfailed after 1 year

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: did its job pretty good for one year didn't have any problems the whole time.

Cons: quit working one day out of the blue. at the very worst possible time nonetheless. did its job for the time but I think that an ssd should last more than one year. I think I'll try a different brand this time. 120gb seemed big at first but eventually got small and annoying.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue experienced with the V300 drive. The drive should last more than a year and SSDs in general tend to last longer than they are relevant. We stand by all our products and can replace the drive under it's three year warranty. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: it just work's.
solid performance for several months now.

Cons: It get small when you start putting a few games in there..

Other Thoughts: 120Gig is good for the os and maybe 2-3 big games but it get cramped pretty fast and I will look into buying another SSD just for games. Taking a bigger drive from the start would have been more simple.

5 out of 5 eggsKingston RMA process worked great!!!

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: SSD failed after a few months. Went to Kingston's RMA process and got the best response I have ever gotten on returning a product. 24 hour email response and then talked with an actual person when I called Customer Service. Took less than a week for a full turn-around of a new SSD.

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsKingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: At the time it was an affordable SSD and had good reviews. It defiantly sped up my boot times but that's about it.

Cons: In real world usage,(cs5, Maya, and other programs) There was no program open time improvements over my wd rapture 250 gig drive. I recently updated the firmware on the drive and no improvements. (Ran crystal disk and hd tune pro before and after the update and no speed improvements according to the results.)

Other Thoughts: If the drive dropped to the 40 usd price range then id probably buy another one and maby use it for a scratch disk. But even then with the 240 and 512 gig drives in the 100-200 price range I really couldn't see spending 40 on this drive.

1 out of 5 eggsUnrealistic Real World Specs

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Cheap when on sale (Trying to get rid of their stock???)

Cons: Don't believe the specs Kingston puts out, they are severely inflated. Do not buy these expecting them to run 10x than your hard drive, unless you have a really, really old one from the early 80's. Maybe not even then. I've built hundreds, maybe thousands, of computers over the last 30 years and these specs remind me of the old days when companies got away with inflated specs, or even vapor ware.

On a new Gigabyte MB with all the SATA controllers rated at 6Gb/s, these 2 drives I bought both run a a max of 225Mb/s when tested with HDTune. Average speed was 200Mb/s. My old Hitachi 1.5TB 7200rpm drive ran at 175Mb/s. That is a far cry from being ten times faster than the hard drive.

Like I said, both brand new drives ran at nearly identical speeds before I loaded any files on them. After I loaded 25Gb of data on one of the drives, the average speed dropped to 190Mbs. Yes, they can maintain that speed throughout the HDTune test, whereas the Hitachi starts to slow down as the buffer in it starts to empty out after 20 or 30 seconds.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes you don't get what you pay for, as in this case. Any company that uses a rating system like Kingston used for these drives is not being honest with their customers. To get their rating of up to 450Mb/s, they compressed the data before they wrote it to the drive. So, 450MB of uncompressed data might become about 200MB of compressed data. If you are writing a jpg pic to the SSD drive, or some other bit of data that is already compressed, you are not going to see speeds of anywhere near 450Mb/s. You are going to be like the rst of us and get between 180 and 200/Mbs.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Danivel,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the confusion with the specifications of the V300 drive. The V300 is our entry level SSD providing good performance at an entry level price point. The 450MB/s speed is rated using ATTO benchmark which uses compressible data in it's workload. The drive's Sandforce controller uses a form of compression to reduce the number of writes to the drive in order to lengthen it's lifespan. We have full specifications of the V300 drive that include incompressible data transfer rates available on our website and the V300's datasheet, here: http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/sv300s3_us.pdf . The expected incompressible data transfer rate for 120GB drive is 180MB/s Read and 133MB/s Write. The 10X faster rating is based on a comparison in PCMark Vantage HDD Suite scoring. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Upgraded from a WD Black series mechanical drive - the difference is night and day.
Bought on sale for basically half off with free shipping.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Even though I'm budgeting out a new monster of a rig to build, my current computer was still running a mechanical HDD as it's primary drive. I hadn't realized how cheap SSDs had gotten in the last couple years, so when this drive went up for half off, I jumped at the chance to see the difference, and it's well worth it. Easily made the last few remaining months with this machine tolerable.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid drives that perform.

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Cost, speed and reliability. I have purchased hundreds of these drives and have not had to RMA one of them.

Cons: NONE!

Other Thoughts: My company builds, repairs and maintains laptops, desktops and other hardware. These and the 240GB SSD's from Kingston have been and remain our #1 selling SSD's. Samsung drives are our #2 because of cost. With these drives selling at the price they are we are able to upgrade machines and still make a living doing so. We are not some fly by night repair shop. We actually were just voted the best PC shop around. These SSD's were part of why we received that award.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 4 months

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast for what a SSD should be.

Cons: Ran really hot when installing an OS and for moderate use. I thought it was normal for this SSD considering its 7mm Form Factor. After 5 months of use, the hard drive failed on me during class. "No Boot Device Found." I lost all my classwork in the process.

I attempted to see if it was the computer at first, but the original hard drive was able to boot without any issues.

I then checked the SSD, put it on a external dock and external hard drive case and it wasn't able to detect it.

Manufacturer Response:

Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.
