5 out of 5 eggs240GB M500 Has Been Very Reliable

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Crucial brand and the M500 model have proven to be among the most reliable you can buy.

Very stable and consistent performance.

Cons: 120GB model has slower "Write" speed than the larger capacity versions (such as 240GB and 480GB), but for most home users the fast "Read" speed is what matters in everyday use.

Other Thoughts: Laptop or notebook users will appreciate the moderate power consumption of the M500. However, if you require the absolute maximum battery life, you may wish to consider either the Samsung 840 EVO or the Sandisk Ultra Plus. Those models have lower idle power consumption which may translate to extra minutes of battery life when you're on the go. Performance-wise, all 3 brands are very similar.

2 out of 5 eggsMeh

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, works out of the box. No firmware update needed.

Crucial 3 year warranty. I hear they pay shipping as well, we shall see.

Cons: In the process of failing after 7 months of normal to moderate use.

See Other Thoughts for full story.

Other Thoughts: Just over 7 months old and I am now starting to have disk boot issues. I bought this thing because they are supposed to be more reliable than HDD and other SSD, but this is just not the case. Ive owned 2 SSD from 2 separate companies, both died within a year of normal to moderate use. I learned the hard way to keep any important data off SSD since when they fail, that's it, it's gone, and so is your data.

The issues began about 3 weeks ago, as I noticed my computer randomly restarting, since I usually leave a few apps open when I sleep/let the PC run at night. A week ago, I get a disk boot error AND master boot record error, which I managed to fix. Then, just yesterday, I get the disk boot error again, but this time the SSD is not showing up in the BIOS. This tells me the drive is going bad, and my unimportant data could be lost forever (Oh no, unimportant data!) So, I clear power to the system by unplugging the PSU, then pressing the power button, then plugging back the PSU and starting the PC normally. SSD shows back up in BIOS.

...And now the PC boots to Windows just fine. I am seriously considering going back to platter based drives for reliability, because these SSD are marketing their products with outrageous MTBF (136 years, really???) numbers, when real world data just doesn't back them up. Sure they are fast, but what's 10 seconds compared to 30, when the reliability just isn't there? My 1TB platter drive I bought back in 2006? Yeah, still truckin'...

5 out of 5 eggsMy First SSD

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very fast on an old Lenovo R60 ThinkPad laptop which only has original SATA ... I get about 30-45 minutes more battery time...So far so good...

As for the negative reviews, many times people will review a product that doesn't work right before a product that does...so the ratio of good to bad is skewed because of the good ones not being reviewed...

Cons: No cloning software is included,

BEWARE: most cloning software you download is full of spyware or is crippled and unusable I used a copy of AOME ...it is free with no spyware(unless you select it when installing don't!!) and can clone without paying as well as backup files....

Other Thoughts: Time will tell the truth of this drive....

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful SSD, even better Price

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Fast
-Good size
-Easy to install
-Cheap

Cons: Didn't fit color scheme of my build, oh well.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this SSD off of a shell shocker. It was more than half off, my main HD was failing and slowing down so I figured why not. The hardest part about the installation was figuring out how to mount it to a Corsair drive bay but I figured that out. I have not had any problems with the drive and it is sooo much faster than what I had previously. If you are looking at this to use as a boot drive, go for it. There is plenty of space to use for the OS but then also a plentiful amount of wiggle room for a few games as well as programs you want to load fast/ that you use on a daily basis.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after a year without warning

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: SSD's are fast and the price was reasonable

Cons: Failure of boot drive is inconvenient. Fortunately data was on another disk.

Other Thoughts: These drives apparently have a relatively high failure rate and when they fail they fail without warning. Avoid!

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Bought this to put some life into an aging laptop. Definitely not disappointed - the hard drive was the absolute slowest thing, and dragging the whole computer down with it.

Cons: The included spacer doesn't actually attach to anything, has no mount points or anything. On my laptop I just had to hold it in place as I slid the drive into the bay.

Other Thoughts: I searched around tons of places to find reviews on SSDs, as I'd heard a lot of bad things about the early ones. Of all the reviews, the Crucial M500 came out as a good bang-per-buck midrange contender. There were faster drives, but this was cheap.

3 out of 5 eggsWorking units are great; 2/6 faulty within 6 months

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Purchased six drives to replace corporate rotational drives, was very excited about the price, performance benchmarks and reviews at the time of purchase. The drives work great, very speedy and reliable thus far. Installation was painless, Win 7 installed no problem. End users thought the entire machine was replaced after seeing the speed increase.

Cons: Two of the six drives are constantly throwing BSOD faults and rebooting; this is very annoying in a business setting. I have done everything from updating all drives from the PC's OEM website, flashed BIOS on PC and even flashed the Crucial firmware from M3 to M5, no change. I am currently working with Crucial to get replacement drives, the process seems harder than it should be since I purchased from NewEgg (as a third-party seller), not Crucial directly.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this product to others; the 4 remaining drives have had zero issues.

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive & Fast

This review is from: Crucial M500 CT120M500SSD1 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) 2.5" 120GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: For $60, you can't beat this SSD. My PC start time from BIOS to Desktop is about 8 seconds.

I was a little concerned if I'd have to do anything different to install Windows on this drive, but everything was just like a normal hard-drive. Plus, Windows installed in about 10 minutes - way faster than it ever took on a standard hard-drive.

ArmA 3 load times were cut in half and so were DayZ Standalone load times.

Again, for 120GB at $60 it's hard to beat this drive. I wanted something that will load Windows quickly and run my three favorite games with room to spare. Once the larger-capacity SSD prices fall down, I'll get another for the rest of my games. Until then, they'll live on my standard HD.

Cons: Could have been packaged better by NewEgg. Came in an envelope with no padding.
