5 out of 5 eggsGreat modem router! Works with Centurylink!!!

Pros: We have three computers and Centurylink "rented" modem router, the speed and quality was ... After some research and trying Netgear router, which did not work at all, I found this TP-link modem router. The package came next day in a big box well packed. It was easy to put it all together and start the installation process with the CD. But even if your smart enough and keep your wifi and Internet provider usernames and passwords, to make it work you still need to call your provider. For me it was Centurylink. First it was a guy who just would not shut up, trying to sell what ever they had there, but after more than 15 minutes screaming at him, he finally switched me to their customer service. There was a guy Mario, who was really helpful, he took me thru all process of the installation and gave me all inportant WAN info and Centurylink username and password, which you can not manufacture userself, it must be new not from the previous router and you can sit and guess for hours by yourself and it won't work. I wrote it all down in case I need it again. We tried it and it didn't work. Mario adviced me to call TP-link customer service, maybe they will help me from their side. I hang up and tried it again and it connected right away with no problem. Usually it needs some time to realize that you got a brand new beast online. Honestly it was the easiest installation of a router in my life. Because this beast is more powerful than the one that Centurylink rents, Mario advanced us to a higher speed. Now I am enjoying my Internet, browsers open quick, I can watch movies online, download something and update three computers and still love my new TP-link modem router! I would definitely advice it to you, if you want to improve your Internet quality!

4 out of 5 eggsDropped signal once in a while

Pros: Fast
Easy to setup

Cons: Wish it had more customizability in the UI (such as bulk Firewall URL filtering import or something)

Other Thoughts: Not sure if there's an issue with the actual Wireless or something on my brothers computer (ARP poisoning or something) but once in a while no device will be able to connect except my brothers PC. Reboot the router via physical button and everything works fine then

5 out of 5 eggsTP W8980

Pros: Simple to set up.
Very stable, above average performance,
IP Qos as good as the top of the line modem routers.
USB MediaServer, that works very well,
Above average 2.4 GHz and 5GHz simultaneous dual wireless,
Excellent value for money.

Cons: The only thing I could name, it comes in a bright black plastic
case that can hold fingermarks.

5 out of 5 eggsImproved Network Performance !!

Pros: Setup was easy !! ADSL connected easy only needed to know my VPI/VCI username and pass. I was worried about getting it to work with windstream here in KY but no problems whatsoever. DSL has solid connection, much better than the modem supplied by windstream, and wireless performance has improved over my old cisco router. I am a happy camper so far !! Seems to be a great bargain for less than 100 bucks !!

Cons: None so far

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: If you can get it to work it's OK.

Cons: Setup is nothing like the last TP link I had. This one is a nightmare and can only be done through IE.

If you can get into the router, getting it to put out a steady signal is almost impossible.

Other Thoughts: I bought this DSL router combo because I was so happy with my last TP Link from a few years ago. But no more.

The firmware is garbage and the performance a complete disappointment.

This piece of junk is sitting in my closet - where it will stay until my older Netgear completely fails.

I do not recommend the W8980.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,
We're sorry the modem router couldn't give you expected performance.
The modem router can be configured in IE/Chrome/Safari/Firefox.
Maybe something special affect it. We would like to work with you to figure it out.

May I have your contact? So that we can arrange our senior engineers call you back and check the issues you encountered.
