5 out of 5 eggsWhat a difference the SSD made to my laptop...

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: This drive made a difference in my laptop compared to the 7200rpm hard drive that it had.

Cons: Nothing that I see as of now.

Other Thoughts: This drive had half the capacity of the hard drive I replaced on the laptop, but I don't intend to put large media (e.g. J-pop MP3s/CDs and videos/TV shows, in HD quality) into the SSD. I would store it into a large hard drive, even if it's slower, but then again an SSD isn't that necessary for storing as such.

The Magician software is top-notch, and it even offers me preset optimizations in just a few clicks. SSDs are fast these days, so I set the SSD into "reliability mode." I'm hoping that the SSD will extend the lifespan of my HP EliteBook 8560p notebook (that I bought at Newegg THREE YEARS AGO!) by another few years. Combined with 8GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory that I also ordered (but separately), that packs a one-two punch and it will get me (and my brother who is playing RuneScape on my laptop at the moment) moving pretty quickly compared to the hard drive and 4GB of RAM that I previously had.

Note: I did NOT use the data migration software. I checked the Tom's Guide forum and there was a recommendation to do a clean install. I also read the limitations to the data migration software that it wouldn't clone recovery partitions of a laptop (unless the laptop is a Samsung laptop), but it was better for me to do a clean install, even though I bought a notebook upgrade kit with a SATA-to-USB 3 adapter. The clean install allowed me to re-install Windows 7 without the unnecessary junkware, e.g. Norton Antivirus (I don't use Norton - I use Avira free antivirus!), PDF Complete, etc. I did re-install some HP utilities though along with the necessary drivers, as well as installing the latest AMD Catalyst graphics driver, something I couldn't do in the past with the hard drive installed. I'd highly recommend an SSD like this, whether it's a laptop upgrade or building a new computer.

As I said again, SSDs are pretty fast these days, so if you don't mind about performance differences between SSDs (since there are higher-performing SSDs, but may be more beneficial for "prosumer" users such as photo and video editing) and just want the lightning-fast response to your existing computer, I'd recommend the 840 EVO or any other similar SSDs priced at this point (e.g. Crucial MX100).

5 out of 5 eggsBest SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: -very fast SSD
-easy to set up

Cons: no cons yet

Other Thoughts: made my 6 year laptop feel brand new again with windows startup time taking between 30 and 50 seconds which would take 10 to 15 min before i installed this ssd ( i have a lot of programs). cloning was a breeze with the software and adapter it comes with.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, easy to set up

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: Very fast. Second 840 EVO I've bought. The first 120gb drive was used in my main tower about 8 months ago, this 250gb one went in my laptop and completely sped it up. Samsung data migration was easy as usual, installation was relatively easy as well, and Magician software is great with the RAPID mode.

Cons: Maybe a little expensive at $180 compared to other 250gb drives but well worth the money.

Other Thoughts: Great drive for a laptop or desktop. Very satisfied with boot times on both

5 out of 5 eggsIncluded Migration S/W worked like a charm

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: I was amazed when the migration software allowed me to move my entire Windows 7 boot drive to my new SSD. It was as easy as a few mouse clicks. I attached the 840EVO as an external USB drive using the SATA-to-USB converter included with my drive. Then I loaded the migration software. I ran the software, choosing my boot drive as the source and the SSD as the destination. Finally, I replaced my boot drive with the new SSD AND IT BOOTED UP IMMEDIATELY AND WITHOUT ANY ISSUE WHATSOEVER! Amazing.

The 840EVO is fast, even for an SSD. Mine was the 250 GByte model, and it is, indeed, lightening fast.

I highly recommend this drive and the use of the included software.

Cons: I have no complaints.

5 out of 5 eggsTerrific upgrade

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: UN-FREAKING BELIEVABLE!! I put this drive into a 5 year old H-P DV-6 with an AMD Turion dual core. I was hoping for some speed improvement over the mechanical HDD, but not what I got. My start-up time went from 90 seconds to 35 seconds! The whole laptop feels way faster than when it was brand new. I can hardly believe it is the same computer.
The Samsung Data Migration software worked flawlessly, except for the master boot record. ( quick fix using Win 7 repair disc) It took about an hour to clone the H-P's HDD using the USB cord (66GB's of data transferred) . After that, installation was easy.

Cons: Are you kidding me???- NONE AT ALL!

Other Thoughts: The most amazing part of this upgrade is the fact that the SSD is running on a first generation SATA port ( 3G/b) - after all, my H-P is 5 years old. Sure enough, the Samsung Magician software shows read and write speeds about half of what the drive is capable of ( same drive in my desktop run about 515-520 MB/s on a SATA 6G/b port) Regardless of what the numbers say, the 5-yr. old H-P feels peppier than it has ever been and is a joy to use once again. Kind of like saying," It has been reborn again". I do not know of any upgrade that can give this much increase in speed as simply changing to an SSD. After this, I cannot ever go back to a mechanical HD ( at least as a boot drive)
Got to give Samsung credit for this one ( the 840 EVO series)- they REALLY got it right!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Upgrade

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: - Noticeably faster than the Intel 530 Series and cheaper too.
- Included cable/adapter and cloning software works perfectly
- Included maintenance program works well too
- 3-yr warranty

Cons: None, so far.

Other Thoughts: I also have the 120GB version of this same model. The 250GB is faster for small file writes due to larger capacity. This is to be expected. This is the best upgrade you can give your laptop or desktop since traditional hard drives are the bottleneck in most systems.

3 out of 5 eggsSAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: Small.
No internally moving components.
Rapid boot speed (allegedly).

Cons: High cost for only 250 GB capacity.
Usual MSRP $205.99, however, I was able to purchase for $154.99 during a shell-shocker sale.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this SSD with the intention of installing both Windows & and 8.1 (dual OS system w/boot menu). My build has 14.5 TB's of storage so all I wanted on the SSD were the actual OS files.
Had infinite problems while attempting to install either OS due to formatting issues (this was a Windows issue however and not in any way related to the SSD).
After multiple attempts at installing Windows 7 my ASUS Sabertooth MB failed (no longer recognized any of the sATA ports other than port 0 and port 6, which was my optical drive). Don't know if failure had anything to with the SSD but I had to RMA my MB and get a new one. Have everything installed in my Cooler Master 935 HAF Stacker, sans the SSD, but have yet to muster the courage to power the system up for fear that sATA ports may not be recognized again. If so, however, at least I'll know the SSD had nothing to do with the original MB failure.
(I Also installed a 4 port PCIe sATA controller card prior to 1st MB failure and I suspect that may have had something to do with the failure.)
All in all, I would recommend waiting for the prices of SSD's to drop and the capacity to increase before making the move to SSD's, especially if you're on a budget (like I am).

5 out of 5 eggsBest SSD Available!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: Very very fast! Easy to install, smooth transition from old drive, revived my laptop giving it new life and only had to clone once. (Alienware M17 R1)

Cons: SLOW (over 4 hours) cloning process with Samsung provided software.

Other Thoughts: Although my startup times didn't iimprove very much, nearly everything else did... No delay in office programs starting up, Games load much much faster and everything really is much smoother!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome drive!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: VERY fast, sharp looks, seamless data transfer, low power consumption gives better laptop battery life, took a slightly older (but original before Dell got them) Alienware and made it cook once again! With laptop kit, took little effort to install.

Cons: With the nature of this drive, should be packaged better against impact (I didn't drop it, but see the inherent dangers). Tho a seamless transfer, very SLOW transfer took almost 4 hours...

Other Thoughts: I put in the included spacer, tho not needed in my laptop, for that much better protection. (Nice touch Samsung!) My boot up times didn't improve much, BUT when I get to daily use, it is definitely MUCH faster! --I was told this is the fastest drive available. I've done no testing myself against other brands but I am impressed with this drive!

5 out of 5 eggsCouldn't have been easier

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE250LW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) With Notebook Bundle Kit

Pros: I got the upgrade kit because this was my first time buying an SSD and I was worried that the cloning process was going to be difficult. This kit made it simple. It was really fast with the USB 3.0 transfer cable and it cloned while in windows.

Windows 8 boot times on this are just a few seconds!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I already have the cable to reuse for my next Samsung SSD purchase
