5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Laptop

Pros: Excellent all round value for the price point, small footprint and back-lit keyboard.

Cons: USB ports are spaced too close together and only one port can be utilized at a time.

Other Thoughts: This is a great little laptop with ample memory and storage for general use applications. Certainly not a "gamer" machine, but I don't play games anyway. I purchased the laptop because I didn't want a big footprint and, its proven compatibility with Linux. So if you're not a fan of "Winblows", this machine will more than fit the bill. Another feature mentioned that I didn't think would be handy, is the "back-lit" keyboard. I've come to appreciate this neat little feature, as my eyesight is not what it used to be!

One last comment. The Linux Distro installed on the laptop is pretty much useless, as others have mentioned. Go ahead and replace it with your favorite distro. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which is very snappy on this laptop and did not give me any software or driver issues.

5 out of 5 eggsAcer laptop

Pros: Cheap. Works great. Low heat output. Doesn't weigh a lot (like 2 lbs?). Comes with CD drive.

Cons: Doesn't come with windows but a dumb version of Linux. I reinstalled mint Linux on it but idk man... the only good thing about Linux (IMO) is its free and security is better (unless you install WINE) but getting iTunes, League of Legends and some other programs to work was a headache. So I installed windows 7 on it... now im happy.

Other Thoughts: Good piece of hardware. I also put a solid state hdrive in it and it boots crazy fast.

ALSO the usb ports are on the back not the side, if that makes a difference.

5 out of 5 eggsReally nice for Linux

Pros: This is a really nice for a linu laptop. Yes, as someone pointed out, it booted to an error. I was not going to keep that OS anyway. I installed Linux Mint for my wife. Google how to install linux, it is easy.

Cons: Well, it did not boot at first, but I installed another OS anyway. Pushin function fy each time to make the pad work, is an easy step, hope it is addressed soon. There is a bug report on Ubuntu for that.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Laptop

Pros: This laptop comes with some great hardware for the basic user and "mostly" supports GNU/Linux. It runs very cool, great image quality and sound quality, too! The Core i3 is a great processor that can take a thrashing for any moderate user. I wouldn't say this is ideal for any gamer, but it's great for office work, virtualization, and all around multimedia usage.

Cons: Everyone else has already said it, but I'll say it again just in case you have some doubts; the mousepad won't activate at boot. There is NO BIOS setting that changes that. Installing Synaptics in Linux doesn't help. You have to press FN & F7 to activate the mousepad. That's the only reason this machine doesn't get 5 stars.

Other Thoughts: For anyone interested in this Laptop, please don't bother sticking with Linpus (the supplied OS). It's junk. It isn't even properly installed IMO. Just install your favorite Linux Distribution and move on. I am not even sure if Linpus has any supported packages in any of the communities. In any case, the laptop is good enough to run Debian, *buntu, Arch, OpenSUSE, etc.

4 out of 5 eggsAtrractive Notebook

Pros: This is a very attractive notebook with nice features. It has a backlit keyboard which I didn't expect. It does not come with Windows which is a plus if you want to install linux. It has HDMI, 2 USB 3.0 ports. Linpus is essentially no OS at all, so plan on installing your own OS. Installing Mageia 3 took 30 minutes. Wifi and LAN worked great. I would estimate this notebook would be $200 more if it had win 8 on it.

Cons: The power jack, USB ports, HDMI, and LAN are all jammed together on the back of the Notebook. I prefer the USB to on the side. I bought a USB hub to sit on the side of the notebook. I had to reboot with the SD card inserted to get the card reader to work. Linux may not be automounting it. Minor issue.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent budget laptop

Pros: Very inexpensive for a laptop with these specs. Has a very decent i3-series CPU (dual-core, 4 threads) and a 500GB drive with 16MB cache. Not bad for the price. Acer has all the Windows drivers (Vista, 7, 8, etc.) on their support web site.

Cons: Comes with Linux, not Windows, pre-installed.
Haven't yet figured out how to install extra memory in this baby.
You need to search the Acer Support site for 'TravelMate X483' to find drivers, etc. It's not listed in their current product list.

Other Thoughts: That "con" about Linux is really just a heads up. I bought this unit knowing full well it was a Linux laptop. But I also saved myself probably over a hundred dollars by not buying a laptop with Windoze 8, which I wouldn't want anyway. I installed Windows 7 Pro with no problem. The drivers from Acer snapped right in and Windows is running flawlessly. Bought this for my son for college. Battery life runs about 4 - 5 hours.

5 out of 5 eggsLinux Only - You install Ubuntu

Pros: Really nice computer! Fast to boot, and fast to shut down. Lots of help on the Ubuntu forums for installing that OS.

Cons: Comes with Linux that you would have to know the commands for that. So, you are on your own for trying to install a 3rd party OS like Ubuntu. I received no help from Newegg or Acer on this. Learning curve for me learning Linux has been steep but getting better.

Other Thoughts: I installed Ubuntu over the Linux OS and it works great. For the touch pad to work, press Fn+F7 on startup and it will work great. Forget my other review.

1 out of 5 eggsError - [root@localhost /] #

Pros: none yet

Cons: I just received the laptop, and it started up until it became stuck on the title error message. Don't know what to do now. Nothing in the literature says what to do now.
