5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: Easy, easy, easy.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: really easy to set up. I am running a security system. The recorder is upstairs & the router is downstairs. I'm running the powerline adapters through a circuit breaker & there are no problems - video feed is good.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Powerline adapters

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: Fast
Easy Setup
Small Size

Cons: Cannot be plugged into a GFI socket.

Other Thoughts: These have worked very well for me. I am able to get a desktop working in the garage with reliable internet. I would recommend this product if you cant get a cable or wifi to the device needing to be networked.

3 out of 5 eggsReliable Daily Dropout

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: This system was easy to set up and get working. I haven't measured the actual throughput with any kinds of stress tests, but my daughter has been quite happy with it (except as noted below) and she watches a fair amount of video on the Internet.

Cons: For weeks at a time, my daughter will lose the signal once every day. She generally just reboots her computer, but sometimes she also has to reboot the router. Then the problem will go away for a while, ony to return. I can find no fix for this constant problem.

Other Thoughts: At $99.00, this is a pretty pricy connection system. If it cost less I probably would have given it 4 eggs, but considering the cost I expect a stable and reliable signal and not one that drops out once a day for weeks at a time.

1 out of 5 eggsOverheats and stops working

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: It works great when it works.

Cons: Overheats and terminates internet connection. I have to unplug it and wait until it cools down.

Other Thoughts: Since the 1 year warranty already expired there is nothing I can do to request repairs or exchange. Now I am looking at other brands with at least 2 years of warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally a solution for poor wireless

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: 500 Mbps is a lie, but knowing this I am pleased with the 70-80 Mbps I am able to get from accross the house and upstairs to the furthest room. I was never able to achieve these speeds with Wireless-N, and had to suffer with dropouts constantly. Now I can finally stream HD TV to a wireless laptop and enjoy the full 50Mbps Cox internet speeds. All without running

Cons: again, 500Mbps is false advertising, but knew that before buying.

Other Thoughts: Something I found was interesting was that I tried the previous model from Best Buy first - XAVB5101. That model had a 1Gbps port, but I was only able to achieve about 45Mbps. After returning them and buying the XAVB5201 from Newegg, I was happy that the speeds are actually faster with 70-80Mbps, even though it only has a 100Mbps port.

When the 2 XAVB5201's were plugged into the same wall outlet, it was going about 105Mbps.

5 out of 5 eggsAn added benefit

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: Adapter works with other brands of powerline adapters.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I decided to add try additional adapters so I could try more computers on my network. The following adapters worked well together:

1. TRENDnet TPL-308E2K Powerline 200 AV Nano Adapter Kit Up to 200Mbps

2. NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

5 out of 5 eggsInstant goodness

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: Worked instantly, no setup needed.

Start to finish setup for 4 outlets was about 5 minutes after running one extension cord.

Speed = 50mbit

Cons: My only complaint, and it doesn't seem to be the products fault, is that you need to plug direct into a non-gfci or surge protected outlet.

Other Thoughts: My previous wireless was pulling about 3mbit in the farthest room. Now it's 50. awesome.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent Simple Device that works

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: 1. Exceptionally easy installation.
2. Worked well for transferring files between computers on the network.
3. Worked well for downloading or uploading files to/from the internet.
4. Worked well for internet browsing, watching movies, etc.

Cons: 1. None that I experienced.
2. Cost could be a con.

Other Thoughts: I used the 2 device system on AMD and Intel CPU computers.
I used the system in multiple rooms and multiple circuits.
System worked decently.
No complaints from my standpoint.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple, but effective!!

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: Simple to set up and use. Just plug one of the adapters into an electrical outlet near your router and connect it to the router with one of the provided Ethernet cables, then plug the other adapter into an electrical outlet near the computer that you wish to network with and attach it to the computer with the other Ethernet cable, and you're set.

Cons: The "500 Mbps" speed claim seems a bit optimistic to me, but it's not enough to take an Egg away from it, ratings-wise.

Other Thoughts: This is a great product to use if you wish to eliminate unnecessarily long Ethernet cables between a computer and the router, particularly if they are located in different rooms or on different floors in your house or apartment.

5 out of 5 eggsworks very well but definitely not at 500MBps

This review is from: NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter Kit (XAVB5201)

Pros: Easy set up. Literally just plug and play. The adapters are on different circuits in my apartment but all circuits terminate to the same electrical box and they work at decent speed. I ran LAN SpeedTest lite and got around 38 Mbps write and 43 Mbps read for a 200 MB test file. Prior to purchasing, I have read that the 500 Mbps speed is really bogus so my expectations were tempered. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase because the room where I have this set up really gets horrible wifi coverage. I was running an Alfa USB adapter which is awesome at grabbing signal but for some reason my wifi was still slow on the computer in that room. I attributed this issue to interference given that I am in an apartment. However, these Netgear adapters really did the trick for me. I will come back and update my review after a few months to see if there are any issues in their longevity.

Cons: nowhere near the advertised 500 Mbps

Other Thoughts: As long as you don't expect to see the advertised 500 Mbps speed, you should be pretty content with these adapters. They are very easy to set up. I think my 4 year old niece can do it if all I had to do was direct her.
