5 out of 5 eggsFantastically reliable

Pros: Gigabit
Jumbo frame support (confirmed with testing - don't forget to turn on jumbo frames/packets on your devices to take advantage of this)
Front-facing lights indicate difference between 100 Mb and 1000 Mb connection
Durable metal housing
Internal power supply means no annoying wall-wart
Rack-mountable with inexpensive bracket kit
Has been running strong for 4 years, never an issue, it's behind a UPS, so it usually runs for several months between power cycles, hey maybe more than a year, I just never have to think about this switch!
Truly plug it in and forget about it...for a long time

Cons: Didn't come with Rack mounting kit (for 19" racks)

Other Thoughts: I certainly paid more for this switch than some cheap-o one, but I've been so happy with it that I'm totally glad I did. I don't do a lot of reviews, but this switch has earned one from me.

1 out of 5 eggsNo holes to wall mount

Pros: My Trendnet 8 port switch is great so I thought this one would be.

Cons: The only reason I can't give 5 stars to this is that the TEG-s16dg does not cutouts to hang it on screws on the wall and doesn't have any mounting brackets. It wouldn't cost anything to have 2 cutouts to hang it on screws.

I have a Trendnet 8 port switch which is mounted on the wall using 2 cutouts to hang it on screws on the wall. I wanted to replace it with the TEG-s16dg but the TEG-s16dg does not cutouts to hang it on screws on the wall and doesn't have any mounting brackets. Unfortunately, I may return it.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for taking your time to provide feedback on the TEG-S16Dg. We typically list wall mounting options within the specifications. Unfortunately the TEG-S16Dg is not wall mountable. However, we do offer a solution for rack mounting the unit. The ETH-11MK mounting kit is available for the TEG-S16Dg and TEG-S24Dg for standard 19” racks.

5 out of 5 eggsTrendnet 10/100/1000

Pros: This switch is the heart of my network and runs everything fine. I don't have to reboot this switch weekly like my last one. It just works.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: The only thing I find unusual is that everything plugs into the front. I would like more lights telling me what's going on in the front and all of the cables to come out of the back. My other TRENDnets are set up with cables in the back.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate: Post RMA

Pros: Seems to work for internal traffic well

Cons: Still kills streaming from the internet, previous switch stopped passing data entirely, this one seems to throttle it to a crawl. Only lowest quality video will stream through the switch, bypassing it allows full HD glory.

Other Thoughts: Both of us at home have serious online classes that require streaming and downloading podcasts of the lectures and this switch simply won't do it without choking. If it's set to HD, it'll buffer for 10 seconds - every 5 seconds. Bypassing the switch - no buffering at all. I have 3 other TRENDnet switches, 2 5's and an 8, and they allow the speed necessary to watch streaming video.

Maybe I got another bum switch from RMA, clearly not new because it had feet installed but I had hopes.

Sorry TRENDnet- used to be a big fan but I'll be looking elsewhere for my larger switches from now on.

Manufacturer Response:

Valued Customer,

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The power saving features are a major plus, I've done some (albeit not extensive) testing and it seems to work as promised.
I also love that the power supply is internal, it just makes for a cleaner install, less cable mess that you have to deal with.
The status lights on the front are very useful and not all competitors offer such a feature. (although a fair amount do, so at the least you could say they are par for the game with this kind of feature)

Cons: Lack of vLANing, but then this isn't a managed switch so I didn't really expect that in the first place.

Other Thoughts: At the writing of this review I've owned this switch for 7 months and the switch has been powered on continuously since the day I installed it 7 months ago (and has seen heavy use, I stream media off my home server over this switch as well as a number of other network intensive tasks). I haven't had any issues with ports dying or going into an error state and needing to have the switch power cycled

If you are looking to upgrade a SOHO network or are looking to do small batches of quick (about 20 minutes verses an hour or more) imaging this is a great buy.

4 out of 5 eggsNobody's Perfect

Pros: Simple to use
Typically reliable *see other thoughts

Cons: Didn't make it a year, but Trendnet's warranty covers it, so it's getting replaced.

[ Wasn't a router issue, so I can't justify the Asus Dark Knight at the moment...;) ]

Other Thoughts: I've got a stack of trendnet switches from a 5 port up to a 16 port which handles the main switching for the house's network. Some of these are years old and work great but the 16 port I got only lasted 10 months with 9-11 connections and on conditioned power and not once having to power cycle or be moved around in a box of network gear.

The 24h Trendnet support was pretty painless and they didn't walk me through a dumbed down script to get to where we did our tests. They were polite, understandable and understood when I said my router was mounted out of reach (12' up a wall) and couldn't simply try a different cable up there.

A drawback is no cross shipping and having to pay to ship to them, but I'm getting an actual new unit so there's that. Had to chain a pair of 5 port's for now, but they still work...

3 eggs for durability
+1 for their support

3 out of 5 eggsLasted a year and 9 months

Pros: It worked well while it lasted.

Cons: Stopped working after a year and 9 months.

Other Thoughts: This switch worked well in my network then started to slow down everything connected to it before it just stopped working. Not sure if this is just how long these devices are designed to last but I expected more.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat switch

Pros: Works great out of the box. 16 Gbe ports for a good price. Solid construction with no fan, and a internal power supply. Uses a standard 3 prong computer power connection.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: people here saying it does not have rack mount ears?.... huh? buy the other switch (TEG-S16G) which is the rackmount version, this is the desktop version.

5 out of 5 eggsA great unmanaged gigabit switch

Pros: Got this about 9 months ago, and it's still trucking along like a champ. I probably have 12-14 devices plugged in at all times, and have not had any ports go bad. It's silent. Transfer speeds cap out at around 114MB/s between two Server 2012 Release Preview boxes, which is around 915Mb/s. I am very satisified with the performance, and how it's just a PnP device. Great!

Cons: It doesn't fly?

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Performs as advertised no isses.

Cons: None, as noted it worked out of the box so I can focus on other things.

Other Thoughts: This is a product that provides 10/100/1000 performance for a reasonable price out of the box.
