4 out of 5 eggsAmazing NAS for our SMBs

Pros: Very much a plug & play device, with very minimal knowledge of networking required to set it up. Works like a charm on the network as well as being able to access it from anywhere in the world and on any of the devices!

Cons: At the end of any software updates, the admin screen says its restarting the computer, but never gets to the restarted screen. Maybe something to do with the NAS OS.

5 out of 5 eggsA new freind

Pros: Its very easy to install and setup, all you have to do is follow the instruction. It is my first time owning a QNAP NAS drive. I am still learning about its many features. I have maxed out the ram on the nas to 3gb. It comes with 1gb. The transfer speeds are fast and is quite under load. I have it set at raid 1 since i only have 2 4tb hard drives one is made for nas from seagate the other one is a wd green( ik ik).

Cons: Some of the app you have to google to find the QPKG since the app do not work sometimes for the app center.

Other Thoughts: I am learning something new every day for the QNAP there is alot of info on the site and forums

4 out of 5 eggsNice, but not great!

Pros: Disk redundancy, applications, throughput speeds, power consumption.

Cons: Only comes with a gig of ram, and when decoding, it can take a bit of time to get an entire media library done. I wouldn't use the on the fly decoder as well, don't think the machine can handle that.

5 out of 5 eggsQnap TS-469L

Pros: Relatively fast uploads/downloads.
Streams well without fluttering so far.
Very quiet.
Runs cool

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Populated with 3 WD Red 2GB HDD. During the first 2 days in operation, unit dropped network connections many times while transferring music, photos, and videos from another computer. Both were attached to a 5-port switch. Moved unit to another separate port which solved the problem. Unit has been operating as expected for 2 days. Still learning the OS but there is plenty of online help and Qnap site.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING!!!

Pros: this thing is feature packed, AND FAST!!! the amount of things this little box is capable of at this low price completely blew my mind. HTPCs are dead.

Data transfers with dual NIC hits a total of 170MB/s when moving files to multiple work stations.

Cons: Low on RAM for 1080p viewing via XMBC, but you can upgrade the ram easily just as if it were a laptop. Buy a $20 2GB RAM module and you are good to go. it works but you can see an occasional stutter when running on the stock half gig of RAM. upgrading the RAM fixes this. no eggs lost for this.

Other Thoughts: I bought this thing to replace a Synology unit that was moving slow, which itself was purchased to replace a Buffalo unit which more or less was not moving at all.

-I am using a 2GB samsung RAM module I pulled from a Dell laptop in this thing, works like a charm.
-Running 4x 4TB WD RED drives in RAID 5. Formatting+sector check on all drives took 10 hours. on my Buffalo unit the same thing took 5 or 6 days. truthfully i don't recall whether it was 5 or 6. in either case it was totally unacceptable.
-DO NOT use regular desktop drives in NS units. they can't handle it and they will die fast.
-I plugged in a 4TB USB drive that was running 2x4TB drives in RAID 1 into this thing via USB 3.0 and effectively turned that old drive into a NAS too. AWESOME!

if this unit was made by a big name like Seagate, Buffalo, D link, WD, etc, they would be charging $800+ for it. it is that good. don't hesitate. buy it.

Cons: Received DOA. I have purchased 4 units for work and one for home. The fifth one I received DOA. Not acceptable.

5 out of 5 eggsRAID Config Thoughts

Pros: Just a few comments to RAID configuration. I have this system in the mail and will load with four 3TB enterprise drives. Research indicates that RAID 5 should ONLY be used if storage space is your absolute highest performance. Read/Write suffers due to the parity overhead. The gurus I read it from say RAID 10 is the only way to go if performance and fault tolerance overshadow space.
I see many reviews here where folks have set up RAID 5, and I presume that might be 3 drive with hot swap.

Cons: I've only read about firmware issues with MAC's AFP. I will test and review as I have a mixed network.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, user-friendly product

Pros: Easy to use QTS OS that gives you complete control of your device from anywhere.

Great features that work as designed.

I use this device inside a Windows domain along with apple products and it works each and every time with no issues. Hyper-V and VMware work like a charm.

Mobile apps that let you manage the system and its contents from anywhere.

Ability to view and share any media type to anyone, anywhere at any time. I stream my movie collection to my Android from anywhere - have not used Netflix since this went online.

Backups. Thank you for giving me the ability to retain the data once its deleted on network drives (can be configured for how long), backup of the entire OS configuration and simple replication to external devices / cloud space.

Cons: Mobile apps still can use a facelift and some tweaking. Combine the half a dozen apps into one since they all serve the same basic purpose.

Price - while the OS is great the hardware is not exactly screaming but is more then sufficient for what's it designed to do.

Other Thoughts: Final Grade - Solid A.

Setting up is easy. Upgrading to larger drives without loosing the raid or data is simple.

For IT folks who are looking to merge their thirst for IT knowledge (Hyper-V, VMware, domains, NAS ...) and simplicity of storage and media unit all in one - this solution is it. I downsized my entire configuration to this, 1 host each for Hyper-V and VMware, switch and router. This provides the storage that is truly flexible in every way.

While many features are available through other sources - this is great all in one solution that easy to manage
