4 out of 5 eggsNot Acceptable updated

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: This is an update to my previous review titled "NOT ACCEPTABLE"

I have since updated the firmware on this router and have had no performance issues whatsoever for the last 10 days.

I really feel bad about giving this router a poor review without doing my due diligence from the start. I know better. I rely heavily on reviews to purchase products and Im sure others do too. I have owned DLink routers for the past 6 years and have not had an issue.

Range on this router is good, and I was getting 92mb/s on my tablet. That smart beam tech really seems to work.

I actually like the fact that it is a stand up router instead of flat. Saves me room on my desk.

I have about 15 different devices connected to it at any given time with no dropouts on devices.

Cons: The only con is the price, it's a little high and the range doesnt extend outside of my home.

Other Thoughts: Sorry DLink!!

1 out of 5 eggsNot Acceptable

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Easy setup. Smart beam seems to work.

Cons: I have to power cycle the router just about everyday or my connected devices crawl. I have 100mb service. I get up in the morning and run a speed test. I get 1-2 mb until I power cycle the router only. Then I get my 100MB usually for the rest of the day. The vicious cycle continues the next day.

Other Thoughts: Range is just OK, not exceptional. I came from a D-Link 825 extreme N that I had for years without an issue, to a router that I am constantly power cycling. That is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback and want to thank you for the review. We are also sorry that you are encountering difficulties with the product. 2 out of 5 eggs2.4 Ghz wireless band dropout

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The 5Ghz band works great. Overall the router works well

Cons: The 2.4Ghz wireless band tends to drop off and disappear at times. The only way to bring it back is to set the security to none and reboot. Then turn the security back on. It would be good if you could use Tomato or DDWRT as alternative firmware as stock firmware is pretty restrictive.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback as we truly value the input and we are sorry to hear that you are encountering issues with the product. D-Link advises that factory reset the camera and then download and install the latest firmware (1.03B01) from www.support.dlink.com. If that does not resolve your problem please give us a call at 1-877-453-5465 so our technical support team can assist you. Thank you for choosing D-Link.

2 out of 5 eggsVery easy to set up

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Looks impressive - some people will love such design.
Very easy to get internet operational. Almost plug and play.
Fast LAN ports. So fast, that my computer's HDD became a bottleneck when copying a large file to it.

Cons: A mediocre coverage, both on 2.4 and 5 GHz. I am surprised that other people praised this router for a good coverage. Forget about HD video or transer of large files over Wi-Fi.
The firmware is unhandy to use; slow responding (many other routers are the same), with some features lacking (only three settings for power: high, medium, and low), no chance to set DD-WRT or Tomato. In addition to all, it requires restart after making any change (each takes between 60-120 sec).
The cloud service requires registration on D-Link website. Tested it for several hours (with HDD attached): slow and clumsy, compared with what I've experienced with routers from other companies.

Other Thoughts: I have plenty of people in surrounding area who use 2.4 GHz networks, so this may explain a bad coverage. Nobody around me uses 5 GHz so far, but the signal droped below -70 dB in 3-4 meters withing the same living room (with link speed at 14 Mbps). This is what I cannot understand.
Overall, this router makes an overall bad impression. I would expect to get a decent router for this price.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback as we greatly value the input and we are sorry to hear that you have encountered issues with the product. D-Link suggests that you make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest firmware from www.support.dlink.com. In addition, under your wireless network settings you want to check the box "Enable Auto Channel Scan" . If you are still experiencing problems please give us a call at 1-877-453-5465 so one of our technical supports can assist you in resolving your issues. Thank you for choosing D-Link.

1 out of 5 eggsCool looking disappointment

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: It is definitely a nice-looking unit with a great set of cool features.

Cons: Performs very poorly. Leaving the wi-fi aside, the machine has problems even with routing the local Ethernet traffic. There are lost packages and temporary slowdowns even between the internal gigabit Ethernet ports in the local network! The DHCP is much slower then in other routers, to the points that some devices report time out, before even getting the IP address (even on LAN!). Machines wired to the router sporadically loose network connection for unknown reasons and rebooting the router solves the problem only for a while. Configuring this machine is a total headache. After changing any of the options the router needs to be rebooted which take over a minute. Now imagine adding 30 mac addresses to the filtering table, and you are talking about a 45 minutes job. Note that the mac filtering is done for Ethernet and WIFi so you have to add even the mac addresses of machines directly wired to the router. I spent around two hours for the full configuration, so be patient if you plan to do anything going beyond a basic setup. The unit does not have standard front lights indicating status of its Ethernet ports so you never know what is really going on.

Other Thoughts: Total disaster. If you need something really working forget about this unit and consider Asus RT-NI6 (if you don't need the 5.4GHz WiFi)

Manufacturer Response:

We would like to thank you for the feedback as we truly value the input. We are sorry to hear that the DIR-855L did not meet your expectations. Please make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest firmware. If that does not solve your connection problems please contact D-Link technical support so they can assist you with the issue and guide you through the solution process. Contact them at www.support.dlink.com. In addition if the warranty period on the product has not yet expired you may qualify for a replacement. We thank you for being a D-Link customer.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: did give me concern whether this would work in a slot other than an x2 PCIe. Put in my x4 slot and downloaded an updated driver and I was off. This card sped up my backup time, eliminating hours off the actual time. I was transferring about 2-3 TB of data from 2 main SATA 3 HDDs to two SATA 3 HDDs with the main 2 in 6G mode and other two in 3G mode. Big bottleneck. This card removed the bottleneck and was pushing speeds of 100MBPS+ compared to about 10-15 MBPS.

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsUPDATE! Improved Performance

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Design, size, features.

Cons: Read below:

Other Thoughts: I originally posted subpar results compared to my expectations; however, I have seen significant boosts in speed over the past two weeks, specifically on the 5GHz channel. I am uncertain as to the reasoning for the increased performance, but I am grateful. I have changed nothing in regards to my set up or location of the router.

My 5GHz channel reaches into my living room, which is about 60-70ft from the base station and separated by 4 walls. I easily reach max speeds for my connection, 12-13Mbps down, and 1.5Mbps up.

As for the 2.4GHz channel, I have better overall coverage, but I have noticed my phone, iPhone 5s, seems to drop the wireless signal frequently at the opposite end of the house, resulting in the -1 egg.

All in all, I am much more pleased with the router after a month of ownership, and have decided to finally sell off old faithful, my DLINK DIR-655.

3 out of 5 eggsTheoretically great.

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: There's no point in reiterating the specs as pros; I'm sure you've seen them by now.

After two weeks of use, I have had stable connections with no drops; not once did I have to reboot as others mentioned previously.

Cons: This SmartBeam doesn't appear to work one bit, pun intended, in my 1974, 1800sqft, brick home. I had really high hopes for this feature, and am sorely disappointed. Walking from room-to-room and outside I saw severe drops in connection speed.

Compared to my older DIR-655, the range of this unit is comparable. I had both routers hooked up in the front corner room of my house and both units reached the same distance with roughly the same .45Mbps speed - not even fast enough to stream Spotify without buffering issues. Those speeds were recorded while outside opposite side of the house about 100ft difference with an exterior door and 4 walls in between. I truly expected better speeds from the DIR-855, but it was not to be.

The DIR-855 was in line in every way as compared to my older DIR-655; truly, the only difference being that I have a simultaneous 5GHz channel on the newer 855. Of course, the 5GHz's reach is far less than the 2.4GHz; higher frequencies do not travel as far as lower frequencies due to attenuation.

All in all, I was very "meh" in regards to the performance. In my environment, I did not see any great advantage over my older 655, which I strongly recommend. YMMV.

Other Thoughts: If you can find this router for around half the MSRP, I'd say go for it.

However, most people would be better off with a simple wireless-n router and some powerline adapters, which has been my setup for about 4 years. You could also just drop some CAT5 through the walls wherever you need it.

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased

This review is from: D-Link DIR-855L Wireless N900 Simultaneous Dual-Band Gigabit Router w/ SmartBeam Technology IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: The product was shipped and packaged securely and had all the required items needed to get going, including, router, power chord and start up manual.

Looks. The router looks great and would not be an eyesore in any room.

The router was very easy to setup and was recognized right away by all computers and wireless devices on the network.

I had to watch a couple quick tutorials on how to get to the correct screens in the admin panel to change the passwords, but really it was very simple.

The videos I watched introduced me to the cloud, which look to be a great option for people wishing to access their router remotely.

RANGE! I love the wireless range on this router. In comparing the last 3 routers I have owned this router by far has the best range. The router is in the basement and even with that outside the house I am able to get 3 bars on my cell. Walking away from the house roughly 200 yards I am still able to get a connection. Very happy with this!

I have not had any disconnects while using the router. Its solid.

The price point seems very reasonable for the quality you get in this router.

Cons: I have no cons.

Other Thoughts: Accessing the USB storage device was a bit difficult, but it was able to be locked with a password and now knowing how to get to it, Its not so difficult anymore.

Great Router!
