4 out of 5 eggsupdate should have posted when I wasn't tired and grumpy

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-810DR AC750 Dual-Band Wireless Router

Pros: Low price. Solid stability sfter reset and firmware update. Suprisingly decent range in 2.4ghz. Dirt cheap for a 5ghz ac router.

Cons: 5ghz band is extremely short range. We have a very small appartment and if go into the bedroom with my cell phone and shut the door, about 30-40 ft away, I will loose 5ghz signal. 2.4 is meanwhile still at full strenght.

Other Thoughts: i don't run any network drives or stream media other than over the web so this I can't speak as to the total speed you will get. I only have a 25mbps fios line so that is all this needs to deal with. I will say that for my pc which is 10ft from the router I see no difference between the 5ghz ac and a direct ethernet cable which is nice. Also much faster connection on my phone in ac.

When I wrote my first review I had been up Very late setting everything up and wasn't able to call up tech support, I just assumed the thing was trash by the way it was behaving even after a firmware update. I had a Lot of trouble getting into the router using the http //tew-810dr address. It would basically just sit there forever thinking and finally say that there was no such webpage. I kept getting booted out of the settings and back to the log in screen when I was clicking thru the settings menus in the router. I was having issues with my devices connecting or staying connected, or just plain really slow transfer speeds, and had to keep power cycling the router. So yeah I just figured it was junk and I was tired and pretty upset by that point.

There were a couple things that solved all my issues.

One was made in a reply to my last review by a customer service rep, before I even had a chance to call them, which actually impressed me quite a bit. It was to just use the reset key on the back of the router. I am not sure why but it made a huge difference in stability. No more dropped connections with devices, and much improved transfer rates. I haven't had to power cycle the router in weeks now.

Second was in the settings under advanced administration management, under idle timeout. From the factory it was set to something like 100seconds, which is useless. So basically every time I was refering to something online to see how to set it up or reference an old setting, the router would time out and when I went to make the change it would boot me back to the log in page. Extremely annoying to say the least. I bumped it up to 600 seconds and have had zero issues with being booted out since then.

The third was to stop trying to login using the tew810dr adress. I still pretty much never get to the login screen using it. I just use 192.168.10.1 and it works every time. You can also change it in the settings to use any ip adress you want if your paranoid about people trying to log in.

Overall as it is now I am pretty happy with it especially for the price. It could definitely do with better range in 5ghz but in our small apartment it is perfect.

4 out of 5 eggsOk router I guess...for the price

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-810DR AC750 Dual-Band Wireless Router

Pros: Small, doesn't seem to get overly hot. Simple setup. Wireless range and speed is good enough (actually way better than my netgear AP which I paid 4x as much for) and no drop-outs (yet...time will tell)

Cons: leaves me wishing I could put DD-WRT on it or get another router that could.

Other Thoughts: I actually bought this as a christmas present for my 11yr old autistic son who seems to have a special knack for all things technical. He was wanting a wireless router so he could learn about IP traffic, port forwarding, NAT setups, etc. He was all excited when he opened it. However I feel like I failed as a parent with this gift because within the hour he had it setup and running perfectly in a double NAT setup with ports forwarded for his minecraft server, and he made the comment that he "wished it was more complicated and had more options like my router". So I threw together a little pFsense box and now he's happy. He uses this Trendnet as an access point now that is attached to his pFsense box. Which he also successfully got working in a double NAT setup for his minecraft servers. In the end, it all worked out ok. I docked an egg due to the limited setup functions available for customization. Performance is good otherwise.

1 out of 5 eggsaplying for return now

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-810DR AC750 Dual-Band Wireless Router

Pros: inexpensive

Cons: I just spent an hour trying to get thru the menu structure and update the firmware in an attempt to get some stability out of the web interface. Half the time I go to a new menu or try to make a change in the settings I get dumped out back to the login screen. That is on the off chance I actually make it into the settings that is. Most of the time after typingg in the management ip adress it just sits there till the browser times out and I have to power cycle the router to get it to work. I tried using a different browser and finally tried updating the firmware as I said. No dice, still dumping me out to login page.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello David,

We are sorry to hear that you are having an issue with the TEW-810DR. It definitely should not be operating in this fashion. If you have not done so we recommend performing a factory reset on the router by pressing and holding in the recessed reset button located on the back of the router. If you are still unable to log into and configure the router properly please email adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-810DR AC750 Dual-Band Wireless Router

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: A piece of junk. Discontinued model. Reset button stuck inside. I can't change default settings either through router or through inaccessible management panel URLs. Manufacturer's support is non-existent. Total waste of time and money.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you are having an issue with the TEW-810DRU. The reset button is recessed, you will need a small pin or object to press it. You will feel the button depress. Press and hold it in for 15 seconds and it should reset to factory default settings. If you still have issues with the unit please email adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include a link to this review.

4 out of 5 eggsReally good one

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-810DR AC750 Dual-Band Wireless Router

Pros: 1. At $26 it is good enough for a AC router.
2. setup is easy and many functions are very good(separated SSID setting, ipv6 support)
3. connection is fast and stable, much better than the router from Optimum.
4. I don't experience any automatic reboot or signal lost.

Cons: 1. The coverage of 5G signal is not good.
Only one wooden door makes my signal only 175mbps, not 433mbps as claimed. I've no idea how to improve it.

Other Thoughts: It is still a very good router at the price under 30 bucks.

5 out of 5 eggsWow!!

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-810DR AC750 Dual-Band Wireless Router

Pros: After going through Belkin router for almost 3 months I decided to buy this one. The belkin wifi router was showing speeds of 10 mbps max.

INstallation was a breeze. Soon after installation the speeds were 45-50 mbps as expected. Loved it

Cons: so far so good

1 out of 5 eggs5GHZ Band - 150MBS?

This review is from: TRENDnet TEW-810DR AC750 Dual-Band Wireless Router

Pros: Cheap price for entry AC router; Intuitive UI; small form factor

Cons: 5GHZ band maxed out at 150MBS which is far less than the claimed speeds; no technical support at all. You get waht you pay for.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Please check the capabilities of your network adapter. You must have an 802.11ac adapter capable of 433Mbps to take advantage of the TEW-810DR’s wireless AC capabilities. It sounds like you may have an N150 adapter. If you have an 802.11ac adapter and can still only connect at 150Mbps please email Adrian@trendnet.com and we will have someone assist you as soon as possible. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.
