5 out of 5 eggsMid-2011 Mac Mini Upgraded to Fusion drive

Pros: Improved performance and additional storage in the same space as the old drive. Well worth the time and effort. This Mac Mini has been fully hot rodded with this drive, 16Gb of Ram and some other upgrades. My wife uses this for CS and photo tasks.

Cons: The process to set up and install as Fusion drive is tedious and not for those who are not comfortable with doing complex set-up.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased three of these for progressively lower prices and all are installed in Macs as Fusion drives at this time. I find these drives to be a nice balance between speed of SSD and storage of the standard hard drive.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, high capacity, SSD/HDD combo drive for a relatively low price when I bought it on sale. Can't argue with 99$ for a SSD with enough space to put my OS on and then a HDD for storage all-in-one for almost half the price of buying each drive separately.

Cons: The firmware update was a bit of a pain to do, as others have mentioned. Go to the manufacture website and download the new firmware, put it on a USB drive and then run it from there and it worked just fine for me.

Other Thoughts: Been running this drive in my new system for almost a month now, and haven't encountered hardly any problems whatsoever. Its quiet and fast and I can't really imagine running out of space with the 1TB HDD to store my files on. I have the OS (Win 7 Home Premium) installed on the SSD along with a few other essential files and my favorite game and everything is working perfectly.

1 out of 5 eggsWaste of Time and Money

Pros: good price through Newegg and delivery was fast.

Cons: SSD becomes unrecognizable after using Acronis to transfer files to second drive.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased two of these drives in the last 6 months, and both times when transffering my files to the second drive I have lost all use of the SSD drive. I bought this in the first place because my old HDD was becoming unstable. After following all of the directions exactly as written, both times I have would up with just a single 1TB HDD with no SSD to run my OS on. As far as I'm concerned WD needs to find a better way of transferring files or stick with just building HDDs. Both drives have turned out to be nothing but a waste of MY time and money. I will not buy another dual Drive EVER AGAIN. I'll wait until I can find a good SSD and install it in my laptop and mount both of the now 1TB HDDs in a case and use them as back up storage.

1 out of 5 eggsSorry, but these drives are junk!

Pros: Fast, almost....

Cons: Unstable and unreliable drive. I am now on my THIRD drive, in just three short (but very time consuming) months! Yet again another failure - surface failures, continuously.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Meagan,
We appreciate you review of our Black2 dual drive and apologize for your unfortunate drive issues. We would like to reach out to you to explore your particular issue and find a positive resolution. It may be unlikely the drive itself, but some environmental or system configuration issue to cause the same result with multiple drives. We would like to explore more deeply your “surface failures” symptom as this may point to a drive too thick for the drive bay within the computer.

Please contact us directly below, if we have not reached out to already, and mention this Newegg review so we can direct you to a team member whom will work with you to discover the root cause of your particular issue and provide a positive solution.

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic Drive

Pros: I am really happy with this drive in my N56VZ. Yes, its a 120 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD. While this is not as good as a dedicated SSD and dedicated HDD it is so much faster than a normal HDD or SDHD. I my OS, programs, and current games on the SSD and everything else on the HDD. You also get an awesome SATA to USB cable and nice packaging.

Cons: Not as fast/good as a dedicated SSD or HDD

Other Thoughts: For 120 was worth every cent.

2 out of 5 eggsBe Prepared

Pros: Good Price, great capacity

Cons: Pain to install

Other Thoughts: I though i was going to pull my hair out to make this thing work. I'll make a handy chart for anyone who wants to get this drive installed in a mere 2 hrs. (Fresh Win 8.1 OS install)
1. In order to get the drive to even be recognized at all you MUST connect it through the usb adapter
2. Download the cloning software
3. Make a clone of your current hdd (at this point the black 2 still fails to make an appearance anywhere in the device listing or drive list)
4. After rebooting your pc the black 2 is now visible to your system( Win 7 32bit)
4.5 I had to wipe and repartition the drive as the cloning software left a 1mb buffer in the front or back but Im not sure if this is a necessary step
5. At this point drivers should begin to install for the drive (at this point i had connected the black 2 by sata cable)
6. Now you should be ready for what was promised out of the box, after shutting down, disconnect your original hdd (your black 2 should be connected directly to pc) and insert your boot media. I used a 8.1 boot flash drive
7. Install as usual
8. Grab some lemonade and relax as Win 8.1 does it magic.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Bob,
Thank you for your review of our Black2 drive. The 1TB HDD portion of the Black2 drive must be locked during the operating system installation from a fresh install or clone. Take special care when cloning so it does not span across the SSD and HDD portions. Please follow the links below to our Quick Install Guide and Install video.

These drives require your motherboard to support AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) to be properly recognized and supported on your system. We provided a firmware update for this drive to achieve best performance and power management. If you have not already done so, please follow the links below to download the firmware update package; which includes instructions how to perform this update properly. Step-by-step instructions for updating firmware and installing your Black2 drive can be followed from our Installation Guide below.

“PC Installation Guide (pdf)”: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=446&type=25

Once your operating system is successfully installed on your Black2 drive and the drive is installed internally, you can unlock the 1TB HDD portion of the drive and prepare it for use with the installer software. Please follow the link below to download this utility.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, Pain to Install

Pros: None (yet), drive would be fantastic but I can't get the horrible software to work

Cons: Provided software is terrible, if you're trying to upgrade from a drive over 120gb, you have to clone just the os and programs to the 120gb SSD and then install it before you can unlock the 1tb hard drive. This would be okay if the cloning software actually worked, but all I get are errors that I'm copying too much, or it shows that I'm selecting to copy 0mb.

5 out of 5 eggsBreathed new life into MBP

Pros: Fast! Startup time for me was lagging, sometimes I would wait 10 minutes before my computer was up to full speed, now I wait 15-20 seconds, and after sleeping, it wakes instantly (I almost wonder if it actually turns off).

Works as a fusion drive, I didn't have to install apps separately onto the SSD, it "just works"

Doing a clean install of OSX was super easy, check this out: http://macs.about.com/od/OS-X-Yosemite/ss/Perform-a-Clean-Install-of-OS-X-Yosemite-on-Your-Macs-Startup-Drive.htm
Then migration from the old hard drive was super easy, as well.

Includes SATA --> USB cable, very handy, instant backup drive :)

Cons: Setup for mac/osx is NOT plug and play, and the paper instruction manual in the box doesn't mention this. You'll need to update the firmware, and boot from the old hard drive to configure the new one (using included SATA --> USB cable).
Plug in the USB, or go to the WD website, they DO have superb instructions, and all the files you'll need to update firmware and configure the drive.
You'll need 1-2 8gb USB drives (or eternal hard drives), tools to open your mac (phillips and what I think is a t6 screwdriver, for me), and about 1-2 hours to set things up, and then another 3-6 hours for migration (I left mine on overnight)

Other Thoughts: I love the speed, and love that it wasn't too complicated to set up. I had read that this drive wasn't compatible with OSX, but that's no longer true.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Idea - Implementation Needs to Be Improved

Pros: I have used Western Digital drives since 2001 because of their reliability and 5 year warranty. I usually use their Black or Velociraptor drives, and in the last few months I have started to use the Intel 730 SSDs as boot drives. In this case, I needed a hybrid drive for my laptop such as the Black 2 which would give a 120 GB SSD as the boot drive and a 1 TB mechanical drive for storage.

Cons: I have 3 cons about this product - 2 of which I was aware of prior to purchasing the product, but went ahead as there was no other alternative:
1)The 120 GB boot drive is small - after installing Windows 7 Pro and Norton which uses 54 GB, I have 66 GB remaining for all the software, ideally a 20 GB pagefile and 20 GB spare (hard drives don't work too well if they are at 98% capacity)
2) The 1 TB portion is a 5400 RPM drive - why not 7200 RPM? This is meant to be a speed up with the latest technology, right?
It was the third con that infuriates me:
3)I followed WD's instructions exactly and after installing the OS and many drivers for other components, I proceeded to install the special drivers for the Black 2 to enable the 1 TB portion - at that point, I encountered an error where the WD software requires that AHCI is enabled rather than RAID. I tried to switch from RAID to AHCI but was unable to despite numerous attempts. In the end, I re-installed Windows 7 to solve the problem. I lost 3 hours because WD's instructions were inadequate.

Other Thoughts: WD is a good manufacturer - the only HD manufacturer I have used in the last 14 years. This product hasn't been well thought out - the design decisions reflect WD concerns rather than End User concerns. I will note that other than the AHCI issue, I had no other problems - I mention this because other users appear to have encountered other issues that I did not. Oh, also remember to upgrade the firmware - it will resolve some of the concerns other users had.
