4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Haswell Celeron (faster than replacement Bay Trail Atom in 3138 version). Fairly easy to open to replace parts. HDMI out and multiple USB's (1 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0) and an ethernet port (getting harder to come by with small chassis notebooks).

Cons: Performance before upgrades. Single DIMM for memory meaning you have to replace 2GB stick with whatever you're adding. Have to pry a little bit to get back cover off, not as easy as some of the older Acer 11.6" notebooks, but easier than the Asus netbooks.

Other Thoughts: I swapped the 2GB RAM for 4GB (must use 1.35V memory) and the 500GB HDD for a 160GB SSD (must use 7mm SSD). I cloned the HDD and the SSD boots right away without issues. I don't use the touchscreen much so I can't comment on that. The trackpad is average, but I don't notice it being terrible compared to other brands I've used.

The Pentium version of this notebook has 4GB of RAM, but is $80 more. The CPU upgrade doesn't make a significant difference, so I opted for paying $30 for extra memory and saving $50 using the Celeron Haswell.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good laptop, especially with a couple upgrades

Pros: +Perfect size
+Excellent build quality & great materials; no fingerprints!
+Nice screen
+Very good performance with SSD & RAM upgrades
+Support & documentation is excellent
+Came with physical Win 8 recovery DVD
+Outstanding value proposition for a daily use laptop, even considering cost of upgrades

Cons: -Glitchy touch pad
-Keyboard keys very small
-Out of box performance leaves a lot to be desired

Other Thoughts: Physical unit/usability: Good materials - outside and palm rest are a rubberized matte material that doesn't attract fingerprints. Screen is nice; 1366x768 resolution works well with 11.6" screen. Touch screen is accurate. Island style keyboard feels good but keys are on the small side. Synaptics touch pad has a ton of issues - apparently a bad driver and lots of folks have these issues according to Dell Community Forums. Best to use a mouse or wait for Dell to issue a new driver. I was able to find a Dell Synaptics driver for another laptop model that was not possessed (XPS9500)

Performance: Just fair out of the box. Celeron 2955U is good for most tasks. You will notice the [slower] speed difference if you're coming from a Core i3 or higher. With SSD and RAM upgrade, performance improves to very good. Upgrading is easy (see tips below). Sound is good for a small laptop; Waves Maxx software helps a bit. Lots of customization options in the Dell Audio settings.

Misc/Etc: No 3rd party bloatware installed on my unit; just Dell stuff, some of which is useful. A full Win 8 recovery DVD was included. Documentation & support on Dell's website is excellent. Diagrams and instructions for hardware upgrades are easy to follow. Drivers and factory installed software is easy to find on the support site. Additionally, Windows 8 s*cks.

Tips: Get a SSD. Backup/clone the stock drive using Apricorn EZ Gig software and transfer it to SSD. I went with a 128GB SSD. Consider this, with Win 8.1 + preinstalled software + Office Professional Plus + about a dozen other apps and my important pics and documents, I still have 75% space left, 'tho I store most of my files in the cloud.
Upgrade the memory. If you're wondering whether to go with 4GB or 8GB of RAM -- yes, the 1137 supports one 8GB 1.35V stick of RAM (and probably even 16GB). In my opinion, 4GB along with a SSD is definitely the sweet spot and the best value. I had an 8GB stick in my older Dell Inspiron 1121 and there wasn't much of a noticeable difference between 4GB and 8GB. With RAM prices up there, I think 8GB for this model is overkill, even for a power user.

Overall: Excellent value. Easy to upgrade. Very good performance with upgrades. Perfect size. Well made.
