4 out of 5 eggsNo issues at all.

Pros: - Tons of space for videos and other media.
- Very quiet. Unnoticeable in a HTPC environment.
- No stuttering during playback of Blu-Ray quality videos.

Cons: - Feels a bit fragile. Build quality could be better.

Other Thoughts: - I am using this to store videos for watching on my Home Theatre PC.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive

Pros: Great $/TB ratio, relatively fast, tons of room.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these. One for my Xbox One, and one for my PC AND Xbox One (media storage). Really don't know what people are talking about saying these drives still spin when the PC is off...that is FALSE! I thought the same thing until I noticed when I turned my PC off, the light on the drive went out too, so I put my hand on the case and the drive wasn't spinning. Seagate must have put some kind of "smart" power switch on the inside.

The one attached to my Xbox did stay on, because I had it in Instant On mode. I changed it to Energy Saving mode, and now the drive powers off when the Xbox does.

Lots of storage on both devices. Plan on buying a hub and a few more of these drives.

1 out of 5 eggsWarranty is only 90 days!

Pros: Drive was great until the power supply died.

Cons: According to Seagate the warranty on "accessories" like the power supply is only 90 days, so when your power supply fails after 4 months like mine did, Seagate will leave you with a dead drive.

2 out of 5 eggs2/3 defective

Pros: USB3

Cons: Random disconnects. 2 out of 3 drives would randomly disconnect. That's a horrible rate. I'm disappointed in Seagate and Newegg for putting me in 2 returns in row (the replacement was bad!). Stop wasting my time.

The power adapter made a whining sound

Plastic housing

Transfer speeds were slow, like 50 MB/s.

Other Thoughts: STAY AWAY!!!!

1 out of 5 eggsStopped Working Within 12 hrs

Pros: Uhmm its got alot of space, it was pretty cheap, and it worked when i plugged it in.

Cons: I plugged it in when i first got the drive, set it up to do a complete backup of all my files and of my computer in general, went to bed. . .woke up my computer was off and so was the drive. . . turned everything back on, now my computer wont recognize the external hard drive in my drive manager, or inside of my "My Computer" but will recognize it as being plugged in. .

Other Thoughts: All in All i thought i was getting a good deal, turns out it wasnt to good of a deal considering the device stopped working after about 12 hours. . . I will probably go back to WD with my next external hard drive

5 out of 5 eggsGood so far

Pros: Huge
Inexpensive

Cons: I think the biggest con about this drive is the mixed reviews so far. I don't know if I'll every be able to trust important data to this drive, but that should really be said of every drive. I think I should treat every drive that way and have multiple backups of important documents, like photos.

Other Thoughts: I've been trying to stress test it since I got it. I started by doing a number of drive diagnostic tests on it. Then I partitioned it into 5 partitions of 1 TB each. Then I wrote an application to write 900 GiB worth of 10 GiB files with random data for each partition.

First partition finished in about 89 minutes and had a pretty constant 170 MiB/s transfer rate. It's currently finishing up the last 100 GiB of the last partition and it is averaging about 30 MiB/s, but it is jumping around a lot - I'm getting speeds between 15-100 MiB/s.

3 out of 5 eggsRandom Disconnects

Pros: Quiet, low cost per TB

Cons: Random disconnects

Other Thoughts: I am using this drive on a Windows 8.1 Storage Pool. It has random disconnects and I have to unplug the power to reset the drive. Fortunately, Storage Spaces is smart enough not to bother with the drive when it disconnects and the system just uses other drives in the pool and warns me of the disconnected drive. Since I use the parity system on my Storage Spaces, no data has been lost. Now that the drive is about 50% full, I am seeing less disconnects, probably because the Storage Space is not writing to the drive as much as when it was first put into the pool. I would not trust this drive in my pool to protect data without a parity or mirroring setup. None of my other 9 drives have ever displayed this random disconnect. So, I am disappointed with the performance of this unit and will replace it as soon as I can.

4 out of 5 eggsSeagate 5TB Expansion drive

Pros: The price for the space is good and the read/write time is good being a 3.0 drive

Cons: Drives do not have an on/off switch. I would expect the drives to run warm being in a tight poorly vented case with out a fan if left on.

Other Thoughts: I have four of these and they all work fine. I use them as backup drives and would not hesitate to buy more. An important point in my use of them - they are hooked to a USB 3.0 hub that has an on/off switch. I do not leave them on when not using them as they spin all the time when powered on.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good -- what I learned from all previous reviews

Pros: 1. Cheap, at 27 per TB;
2. Quite and minimal vibration;
3. Cool with continuous writing.

Cons: 1. Short USB cable: the USB3 cable is shorter than any other WD external HDDs USB2 cable I have. (see cable in product picture)
2. Loose DC power jack: the DC power connect does not have a firm connection in the power jack. As long as you don't touch it, it is fine. But it does feel "wobbly" like some other reviewer had mentioned;
3. One-year warranty is too short: I total agree with one reviewer's comment that said "if it goes bad, you lose all the data anyway. why would a warranty matter?". However, I would rather have a (refurbished) replacement to use as a secondary backup than a paperweight.

Other Thoughts: I read every "Cons" in every reviews of this product before purchasing this "three-egg-product", and summarized the following rules to follow regarding this product:
1. DON'T take it out of the enclosure: it seems that a lot of issues occurred when trying to take the drive out and try to use it as an internal drive;
2. DO delete whatever partition the drive comes with, and recreate one GPT partition: from quite a few previous reviews, it seems that this is the best way to utilize this drive;
3. DO try to write to it continuously for a long period of time: I filled up the entire drive with my back up Virtual Machines (large folders around 50 GB each) as soon as I formatted the drive. The overall write time is around 36 hours, and I am happy to report that there was no interruptions nor connection drops, and the temperature was just a little warm. From previous reviews, it seems that this is the "make-or-break" test -- and you want to make sure that it passes this test as early as possible so you are return a defective drive;
4. DON'T leave it plugged in when you are not using it: from previous reviews, it seems that the drive is continuously on (spinning) even when you are not accessing it. Though I did find the drive idle (no light, no vibration) after a couple of hours of no activity (writing finished at around 4 am, I checked it at 6 am). NOTE: if you decide to unplug the power when your computer is still on, eject it first (a couple of reviews said they lost data/drive after unplugging it "hot");
5. DON'T delete the original files yet: 5TB (or 4.54 TB rather) is a lot of data to lose. Keep the original files a bit longer before deleting them (I am keeping them for 2 more months).

Standing on the shoulders of giants -- thank you to everyone who tried it before me! I will update my review if I have new findings.
