2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: I loved how small this little goodie is. that's why I bought it. Others didn't like the screen, said it wasn't brightly lit enough, but that didn't bother me, and I really liked that it tilted generously so I could get the right angle for viewing wherever I used it. (You know - not like when you put an iPad in a Zagg keyboard case, and the tilt is One Choice Only). I also liked the price tag - that was amazing!

Cons: I had the computer up & running for several weeks. I actually found myself avoiding it, totally unlike me. The keypad was a huge problem, and the type size on the screen was a huge problem. I'm 70. Even with glasses, I couldn't see the darn thing w/o straining the eyes overly much. Control+ made the internet bearable, and in some programs, you can adjust View and/or print or type-size -- but all the main screens of menus etc were too small to see. And worse yet, the Key-pad?!?!?! - I learned to touch-type 55 years ago, and have been doing it all my life - and this keyboard had more problems than I've ever encountered anywhere, including manual Underwoods from 50 years ago! : a) Type a sentence, and then have to correct more words than not, b/c the keyboard wouldn't "register" this "e" and that "Q" and every "p" in the sentence --- which wasn't even consistent, because the next sentence would be missing r's but all p's would be present! So more than 50% of words ended up misspelled because the keyboard didn't register the keystrokes properly, & so then wasted time with corrections. And the space-bar was SO non-responisve that it just plain didn't work half the time - so a sentence could easily end up being only 2 "words" with each of them 35-to-60 characters long b/c no spaces "happened" to separate words?! MORE wasted time making typo corrections. Also - really odd "End" on keypad - had to hit something like "Fin-End", very clumsy and not intuitive at all. Wasted time finding it every time.

Slow speed could have been dealt with as others have advised. But, as is, it took more than 5 full seconds for a triple-click on a url to highlight the url, and then another 4-6 seconds to paste it elsewhere; and at least once, I counted TWELVE seconds to close down an internet screen. It could also take 8-10 seconds to bring up Word or Excel sheet. I spent more time Waiting than Doing Others' ideas about how to remedy the speed issues, would have been done, had I not been so miserable with the keyboard and the un-use-ably small print-size on the screen (My tech told me 2-3 things to do, to get the print to look bigger, and they helped barely minimally - and then several of my programs wouldn't load b/c that put the resolution off.) Lastly, I didn't like (even resented) all the menu of "junk" on the Start page. Probably my tech could have got rid of a lot of it if I'd kept it. It just seemed like a pushy hard-sell invasion of what I actually want and need. probably a Win8 issue not an Acer issue

Other Thoughts: I'd read all the reviews I could find (NewEgg and elsewhere) and thought and hoped and believed that this computer would be the answer to my Travel issues. I am SO disappointed at being unable to use it. Maybe a person below the age of 35 can see it just fine, but not me. And I don't know why others didn't reference the keyboard problems! It was beyond awful. I returned the computer, am going to try a much more expensive 13" item from Lenovo

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Nice - except the screen

Pros: Jeremiah J’s review is SPOT ON! I read his review before purchasing and I too can live with the cons. Now, I’ll add my take:

I am a IT Consultant constantly going from client site to client site. I bought this unit as a replacement for my 5 year old Asus HE1000 netbook. That netbook was awesome but just got too slow (especially playing Flash videos online).

The Acer is small, about as small as my old netbook. Screen is just a tad bigger. The Acer is a hair lighter too. That’s nice.

I installed a 256 Crucial SSD with Windows 7. It’s very fast to boot and peppy, like a computer with an SSD should be. Much faster than my netbook with the same SSD.

I like the power adapter as it’s basically a brick with a cord unlike a lot of other laptop power supplies which have a cord, brick, cord.

The keyboard has a nice look and feel.

Debated whether I’d keep it initially but it seems to fit the bill. Read the other comments though.

Cons: The screen is definitely a huge step down from my netbook….Yep, my netbook. Looses one egg for that. The contrast ratio on the netbook was far higher and the Acer just looks washed out at times. I thought this would be a deal breaker but because of its other advantages (light, fast, got a NIC, USBs, etc) I’m gonna live with it.

Not a fan of the touchpad. I opted to get this over a Mac (dual boot to Windows) because my damp fingers don’t glide on the Mac touchpads. Well, I’m in the same boat with this one. Touchpad feels to me like a Mac.

I replaced the HD with an SSD and this thing as BSOD’d on me twice. Once was when the power was almost completely out. Because how I use the laptop it’s not a big deal for me to hit the power button and just turn it back on. Boots up fully to Windows 7 in about 18 seconds with the SSD. I “think” it could be due to the cruddy connection cable from the laptop motherboard to the SSD. When I have more time I’ll investigate further. Not knocking an egg off for this just yet.

Other Thoughts: The Asus He1000 netbook I bought about 5 years ago was a Home Run Hit at the time. It basically had and did everything I wanted. Only bad thing about it was the mouse buttons that were hard to push, I lived with it. I spent roughly $400 for that unit at the time. Was hoping I’d get this Acer which would be the same but faster. Of all things, it’s the screen contrast that’s the real drawback. But again, not enough of a factor to send it back for the price and it does do what I need it to do.

Oh yeah, it does have a fan. Have no idea where “fanless” comes from. But it makes no difference to me. The fan could be 10 times louder and I wouldn’t care.

It also barely fits in my little netbook bag which means I didn't have to replace my bag as well.

5 out of 5 eggsnice little netbook, good value

Pros: Small, but not too small. Aesthetically pleasing aside from a few oversights (see cons). Pretty good horsepower and battery life (all things considered).

Upgraded to a 250GB SSD (Samsung 550 evo) and 8GB of Corsair 1.35v RAM with no issues. Runs Win7 with ease (acer supplying Win7 drivers is a real bonus). Boots in about 15 seconds.

The computer is designed to get into and upgrade easily and quickly, which is nice.

Also using a 128GB SD card for additional storage.

Cons: Acer is a bit deceptive in some of their marketing of this product. They say the laptop "doesn't need a fan", implying it doesn't have one. It does, but it is quiet.

The cunning wording isn't very endearing, I'd have a more favorable outlook of acer if they used honest wording, like "only uses its single, whisper-quiet fan under heavy loads, giving you the quietest, coolest experience possible."

The computer sports a classy, matte black finish. For some reason, the screen bezel is gloss black. Not only does it clash with the rest of the finish, its also a fingerprint magnet and is highly reflective (not something you want around the screen). Feels like a bit of an oversight.

Screen is a bit washed out, but that's pretty typical of this price range.

Tracpad is simply bad.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who wants something portable, simple and efficient. I mainly use it for internet, word processing and a few light games (doom, quake, duke nukem 3D, etc.)

I know my review is more heavy in the cons than the pros, but basically any aspect that isn't mentioned in the cons can be considered very good or great.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performer, good value

Pros: Able to be upgraded to 8 GB RAM. Good value.

Cons: Could come with better documentation or have better documentation available online.

Other Thoughts: It was easy to upgrade the RAM but there was NO documentation available that was useful as the manual did not correspond to the actual unit. The documentation showed a hatch that could be opened to access the RAM and the actual unit had no such hatch. Fortunately, there was only one screw that needed to be removed for the entire bottom plate to be removed and expose the motherboard with the RAM slots.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little laptop

Pros: I needed something small and inexpensive that still had a bit of speed. Wasn't real concerned about the power, i3 works for what I need. Added 4GB more ram, a Samsung 840 EVO SSD and a fresh copy of Win 8.1. Flies now, boots in 8 seconds, plenty responsive. Hard to believe that netbooks were all the rage a few years ago, this is the same size and not much more expensive but outperforms them by 10 times even without my upgrades. Happy with the purchase so far.

Cons: The touchpad isn't the best.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Notebook and Value

Pros: I'm not sure how the unit behaved stock, but I upgraded the RAM to 8GB and the HD to a 7200RPM drive, installed Linux Mint (all hardware works at install without any additional configuration or drivers) and the performance is excellent. Very responsive, quick boot time, etc. Even with the upgrades, still an excellent value for the performance. I used it to replace a netbook running Linux Mint and the difference is very significant.

Cons: None that I've found.
