The Strobe 500 has all the features you expect in a powerful desktop scanner, such as a 30 images-per-minute duplex scanning speed, a 20-page Automatic Document Feeder, and Visioneer OneTouch with Kofax VRS technology. Then at the push of a button, the Strobe 500 ejects from its docking station to become a full function mobile scanner with USB-powered operation. The Strobe 500 also scans to searchable PDF for easy data retrieval, and offers Nuance PaperPort and Nuance OmniPage Pro for easy document management.

  • newegg Versatile Use the Strobe 500 as a desktop ADF scanner by placing it in the docking station. When you need to hit the road, just take it from the docking station.
  • newegg Visioneer OneTouch Visioneer OneTouch is an easy-to-use utility. It connects the buttons on the Strobe scanner with a powerful set of scanner settings to greatly improve the efficiency of your workflow. With one touch, the document is scanned automatically to email, Word, your printer, or simply a file folder.
  • newegg Kofax VRS Technology The Strobe 500 integrates Kofax VRS image enhancement technology into the OneTouch scanning process. VRS is the gold standard in image improvement technology. Imperfect originals are automatically turned into perfect scans that are easier to read for the human eye and the computer's eye. OCR results are dramatically improved, file size is decreased, and scans look as clear as the originals. And every page is custom corrected automatically, so you can batch together clean, laser-quality documents with your imperfect originals. The results are amazing.
  • newegg Text Searchable PDF If you can't search your scanned documents by their content, you might as well be looking at paper again. The Strobe 500 can scan automatically to searchable PDF. It preserves the integrity of the scanned page so that the layout, signatures, logos, and photos remain intact, but the text is OCR'd so that you can search the document by its content. This is very powerful when looking for a single document among hundreds or thousands.
  • newegg Nuance PaperPort Millions of professionals rely on PaperPort to save time and money by transforming paper documents into searchable digital documents. PaperPort combines the efficiency of document management, the convenience of superbly scanned documents, and the power of creating PDF files to bring a new level of operational proficiency to you organization.
  • newegg Nuance OmniPage Pro Nuance OmniPage Pro provides a precise OCR and layout retention solution, quickly turning scanned documents into editable, formatted text. The text can then be used in virtually any word processing, desktop publishing, or web publishing program.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent scanner for the price

Pros: We bought this scanner from Newegg in 2010. It is still a general-purpose workhorse in the office. It can give either fast, OK quality scans or somewhat slower, high resolution ones.

The software bundled with the scanner is not worth installing. You get an outdated and crippled version of PaperPort. If you have Acrobat or PowerPDF available, you'll have far better luck scanning directly with that. The Windows drivers allow using the scanner with any scanner-capable application.

The sheet feeder works reasonably well. Papers need to have a straight, uncrumpled leading edge to feed reliably. Being able to choose between single sided or duplex scanning is a great benefit.

Cons: As others mention, scanning receipts can be frustrating. The scanner allows inserting papers into either the top feeder slot (used for multiple sheets) or directly into the front of the scanner. The front-load slot is useful for a single page, as the scanner automatically grabs the sheet. Flimsy receipts don't work reliably here. They usually misfeed or get crumpled. One-by-one feeding through the top slot is the trick.

I really recommend against using the bundled software. The intentions are admirable; you turn a dial on the scanner to one of six settings, press either the single or duplex button, and scans are made, converted to a format you desire, and stored in a particular folder. In theory at least. The reality is that the software often locks up, reverts back to silly default settings, or makes unusable scans. Uninstalling and using the default Windows drivers fixed all these problems. You do, however, lose the ability to control scans from the scanner buttons.

Other Thoughts: For the price this scanner is a good choice if it is for occasional use. If you regularly scan many receipts a day, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent scanner

Pros: This is a decent scanner for the price. I've been using one for a couple years now with no real complaints when it comes to regular paper.

Cons: When scanning receipts or anything on that thin waxy type of paper the scanner sometimes just crumples them up.

Other Thoughts: When scanning duplex on a cable longer than 6' the scanner errors out and has to be reset every few pages. I've ran into this with other scanners as well so I probably has nothing to do with this model. Best to just use the included USB cable.

2 out of 5 eggsOften Frustrating to Use

Pros: Solidly built, produces quality images. provides options on resolution/file size trade-off plus choice of black and white, gray scale and color. Will produce pdf files and has a primative drawing program to edit files.

Cons: Document feeder often does not grabe the first sheet. Scanning software often locks up.

Other Thoughts: I have three of these machines for over two years. The longer I have them the less well the hardware and software works. The scanning software often locks up and to remedy this I have to either exit and re-run the program, turn the scanner off and on or sometimes reboot the computer before it will scan again. I am continually putting pressure on the paper when I insert it into the feeder so that the first page scans. Often in spite of this I am unsuccessful, the first page is not grabbed and the software locks up. I would not purchase this scanner again.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Setup was quick and easy. Paper misfeeds are rare. Too bad this item became deactivated a week after I bought it. On the bright side I found a PlusTek machine that works just as well if not better than this one, at a lesser cost.

Cons: Deactivated.

Manufacturer Response:

Good Day. I would like to understand what went wrong with your scanner. Can you elaborate on what you mean when you say the scanner became deactivated? That would help us in understanding your frustration. Thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Scanner

Pros: 1. Scans duplex
2. Scans quickly
3. Quality scans
4. Twain drivers

Cons: 1. Not made for more than about 10 page documents (you can add as they scan)
2. A few jams, but I never had a sheet fed scanner that didn't (even the $4000 ones)

Other Thoughts: This scanner is not for scanning hundreds of pages daily. It's a good personal scanner. I have emptied a file cabinet of old documents at the house. I liked it enough to order me one at work (and another for my boss)
BTW - I don't use the software for managing my documents, I mostly scan to Acrobat and manage them myself.

5 out of 5 eggsGood machine

Pros: I bought this at a deep discount from Newegg in June of 2010 and have scanned more than a thousand pages. It has taken a number of ragged-edged, creased-and-unfolded and old-and-brittle pages without complaint, and I can't blame it for the couple it shredded. Depending on paper thickness, the ADF will take more than the rated 20 pages, up to 30 or so. Using the front-feed single-sheet feeder, it scans heavier stock, e.g., covers of paperback books. The accompanying PaperPort software works fine, but I have preferred to run it from my ABBYY OCR program via TWAIN driver. Color is satisfactory.

Cons: My only complaint would be that it isn't what it isn't -- a larger, office-model scanner that would accept 100 sheets or more at a time so that I wouldn't have to constantly feed it and could do something else while it scanned.

Other Thoughts: Although this isn't the scanner's fault, be warned that although the scanning speed of 15 sheets per minute (B&W, 300 dpi) seems accurate, depending on the speed of your computer it will take a lot longer to actually digitize documents.
