5 out of 5 eggsGood product, we keep purchasing them.....

Pros: Uses TWAIN drivers, that work with our legacy programming as well as new programs that use this standard.

Well built, fast scanning. We have been purchasing them since November of 2012 and have more than 37 of them. I cannot tell you much about the software that come with the scanners as we don't use it.

Cons: Every once in a while the power saving time out feature has to be reset so it does not shut down the scanner, but they can be counted on one hand the times it has happened since we have been using them.

We have had 1 scanner that needs to be returned under warranty (actually I think it is the power supply, not the scanner).

Other Thoughts: Absolutely would recommend this to others and have recommended to others that have asked about "a good scanner to buy" for personal use.

5 out of 5 eggsI must concur with the 5 egg below

Pros: I'm not sure why on both the 281 and 283 these few bad reviews exist. My situation is very similar to the below 5 star review. I've used the 281's for quite awhile now and have moved on to the 283's. Both are capable little scanners for the price. For the most part they just work. I was impressed enough that I bought one for home use, scanning documents and receipts, etc to reduce paper clutter and enable me to retrieve information from my home pc remotely.

Cons: I must also agree that the standby mode is a nicety for some maybe, but not in a work environment. I immediately turn it off.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased probably 20 of these scanners so far and they just keep working. Great value for the price. As with most scanners nowadays, it is TWAIN compliant.

5 out of 5 eggsIgnore the 1 Egg from the liar below

Pros: This lightweight, durable machine performs admirably through our EHR system. It does everything we require of it. I have installed a few of these (I also have plenty of the PS281s which were succeeded by these 283s. I've never had a problem any of these units (or the 281s) during or after the initial setup. I highly doubt the guy who gave 1 egg is deserving of his 5 egg tech level proficiency. He got his eggs switched around. I scanned the installation disc with Vipre, no trojans present. The fool below probably uses Norton, McAfee, or Microsoft Security Essentials. As far as calibration is concerned, there's nothing wrong with the provided sheet. It fits perfectly, every time. We scan hundreds of medical records a week and there are never any problems with image quality. This machine is excellent, especially considering the price point. Again, ignore the moron that gave 1 egg. I run an IT Dept for a private medical group with 13 doctors spread out over 7 offices. Although we barely use these machines outside of our EHR system, I have tested the ability to scan to PDF and it works fine using the included software. You just have to configure the options as you want them. This is more proof that the imbecile below is nowhere near a 5 when it comes to his tech level.

Cons: No tray to catch the papers after they're scanned. Standby mode is rather annoying, I always disable it. I got tired of my staff calling me to say their scanner doesn't work (which was always corrected by having them press the scanner button on the device itself to wake it from standby mode).

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy!

Pros: Free return shipping with Shoprunner!

Cons: First, the installation disk has a trojan imbedded in the primary scan management program so don't even try it. I pull the software off the manufacturers website and that seemed ok though. The software is terrible and the scanner can't actually do what its description says. Its output format does not include pdf and it cant do OCR on the fly. Pretty much makes it useless as an office document scanner. The calibration on the thing, which most such devices never need, is wonky at best since the paper included is slightly too wide for the scanner. Most of the images it produced were skewed even when the paper feed was perfectly straight. Not even consistent about that though otherwise I'd have thought it wend back to the calibration issue. Last, this thing obviously has holes drilled for a paper catch tray but it doesn't come with one and just spits the paper out in a disheveled pile. Maybe I'm spoiled by the Canon M160 at 5 times the price, but this thing is unmitigated junk.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry you had problems with your PS283. Our support group in southern California could have most likely got you up and running quickly. All of our scanners can scan to searchable PDF and the include ABBYY Finereader as part of the software bundle. If you were having problems with PDF and OCR and your virus detection, it may be possible that your disk was defective.

I'm not sure what was going on about the calibration sheet being too wide. I had our warehouse manager spot check some of our inventory and the calibration sheets are all to spec. Incidentally, you can use a sheet of plain white printer paper to calibrate the scanner. Calibration is only necessary when you first install the scanner. However, if you notice streaks on your images and cleaning does not remove the streaks, you can re-calibrate the scanner to eliminate the artifacts from your images.
