5 out of 5 eggsPlug it in and it works

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: There isn't a whole lot to say about a flash drive, but these are my thoughts.

The flash drive is 64GB, it can hold a lot. The drive is made of 2 plastics. The outer part is a softer feeling plastic that can handle being dropped, thrown or otherwise abused. The rest is the shiny plastic you are used to seeing with a lot of cheaper electronics.

The blue LED is lit only when transferring files and isn't too horribly annoying which is nice.

The read speed is not too shabby either. The write times are a bit slower with around 17MB/s average on a file transfer. The read times average about 80MB/s. This will be the kind of flash drive to store CD images and other large files meant for redistributing.

As for the average Joe, it works great for anything you could need, store it all and never worry about the space. But please, always keep a backup! We as a people will put more things on it as the capacity grows, but be leery of carrying all your eggs in one basket. See my other thoughts for my recommended application of this drive.

Cons: The write speeds are a bit shocking compared to the reading speed. You can read data at about 80MB/s, but writing is closer to 17MB/s.

The slider design is nice in that there is no cap, but there is nothing to prevent particles and other objects from going in to the connector even with the slider closed.

Finally, if you are not properly lined up with the port, you will simply close the slider instead of inserting the drive. The slider doubles as the grip and if you push too hard or have stiff USB ports, it will become very annoying to keep pulling the slider back.

Other Thoughts: All in all, I would recommend this drive for use by IT personnel for storing and taking ISO images and other large programs from place to place. This is primarily due to the number of reviews that cite failures. I have only had this drive for 1 month and have had great luck with it. But many have had failures and 64GB worth of data is a lot to lose. So always make backups of your personal data!

3 out of 5 eggsCorsair Voyager Slider 64GB 3.0 Flash Drive

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: Good size for backing up files or what ever you need it for
Feels pretty rugged and could withstand a drop
Very Competitive price per size
Recognized in 3 different operating systems (Win7, Win8 and Win 8.1)
5 year warranty

Cons: Definitely not the fastest 3.0 drive I have used as other reviewers have stated.
Although the read speeds are pretty snappy the write speeds are only slightly faster that USB 2.0.

Other Thoughts: The slower speeds is why I had to give it a 3 egg rating plus you can find 64GB drives cheaper and probably faster.
Here are my results with Atto benchmark tool:

Filesize / Write Speed / Read Speed (MB/sec)

0.5 / 208 / 3319
1.0 / 444 / 6243
2.0 / 890 / 12106
4.0 / 1820 / 19359
8.0 / 5184 / 26491
16.0 / 3846 /34942
32.0 / 7858 /38641
64.0 / 9051 / 42010
128.0 / 11883 / 41412
256.0 / 12141 / 41562
512.0 / 12999 / 40184
1024.0 / 12959 / 41110
2048.0 / 14186 / 40108
4096.0 / 14 625 / 41191
8192.0 / 16025 / 78261

In real world situations it starts to write fast around 35MBs then it will drop down to 16MBs or so. Other than the "slower" write speeds I am fine with the drive as a smple storage device and maybe that's what it was meant for.

2 out of 5 eggsGrrrrr......

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: Very fast
Decent price for specs

Cons: USB 3.0 quit working after 9 months. (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: This drive quit being recognized in any USB 3.0 slots. Recognized in USB 2.0, just not 3.0. I've tested the USB 3.0 on several different machines. All recognized the drive in USB 2.0, none in USB 3.0.

This is my second USB 3.0 drive from Corsair and both have died/quit working properly in under a year. They have amazing RAM and other products, but maybe USB 3.0 flash drives aren't their thing.

3 out of 5 eggsspeed stick

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: high capacity. inobtrusive cool slider designer. no cap needed

speedy usb3. flash drives have come a long way since the 1gb/2gb/4gb days

tried it in multiple computers and different versions of windows. no problem for system to recognize it

played videos and podcasts off of it no problem. blue led blinks when being accessed

Cons: when you slide it close, the end slinks out a bit, the usb head doesnt stay fully closed

tried to test it and drag and drop a blu-ray movie into it, it wouldn't let me, even though there was plenty of space. maybe this error is on the OS side

I don't think the slider design will stand the test of time

Other Thoughts: I would pay a few more bucks and grab the 128gb capacity. You never know...

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: Large capacity
Immediately recognized by all devices tested with
5 year warranty
Fast read speed
Sturdy design

Cons: Slider "cap" doesn't protect from dust or debris
Larger than similar capacity devices
Slow write speed

Other Thoughts: Other:
The formatted capacity is 57.6 GB. It is formatted as FAT32, great for compatibility, but bad for large files.

The write speeds aren't superb. I have older USB 2.0 flash drives that have better write speeds, but that was a selling point on those, not on this drive. The description lists fast read speeds and it does deliver them. I didn't encounter any real issues using this flash drive for small videos, documents, pictures, etc.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good write speeds

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: +USB 3.0 with good read speeds for a flash drive

+No stupid caps to lose, since it retracts back into its own case.

+64GB (57.6GB pre-formatted in FAT32)

+Nice blue led that isn’t an annoying bright light.

+5 year warranty so they must trust their product. If it did have to be replaced it shouldn’t cost much to ship it due to its light weight. Most products don’t come with 5 year warranties.

Cons: -It would be nicer if the write speeds were faster than they are.

Other Thoughts: The flash drive itself is a little fat, but I was still able to fit it next to or above my other flash drives. It has a smooth type of rubber coating on it, and I like the looks of it more than I thought I would.

The write speeds are the only thing that I am a little disappointed with. I have a 64GB microsd card that gets a little faster write speeds. Although the read speeds on this are just as good.

So far I have had no problems with it, and even transferred over 11GB to the drive without any aborts.

Tested on a MSI Z97 motherboard with an Intel 4771 cpu.

I won’t type out all the USB 2.0 speeds, but for the largest 8192 file size on USB 2.0 the write speed was 13653 and the read speed was 44369.

3 out of 5 eggsSome nice features hindered by performance

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: • Minimal packaging that was easy to open. Not frustration-free, but close enough
• Design: slider is easy to slide in and out. Easy to get a good grip on unit to keep from dropping
• Blue USB male end reminds the user to use a USB 3.0 port
• Led light indicates usage is blue and not too bright/blinding

Cons: • Plastic part of packaging was not recyclable.
• Larger than comparable 64GB thumb drives
• Performance: it’s slower than other USB 3.0 devices (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: • The performance is a deal-breaker; and, I’m surprised that Corsair fell so short in this area. Therefore, I knocked off two eggs.
• 57.6 GB of space, the non-standard 64GB is stupid and I wish manufacturers would stop the shell-game.
• Initially formatted as FAT32, so you will need to reformat to transfer files greater than 4GB.
• Transferred 20 files totaling 6.42GB in 6min 26.467 sec @ 17 MB/s
• Transferred 1 file totaling 3.33GB in 3min 20.808 sec @ 17 MB/s
• Transferred 1,555 files totaling 2.47 GB in 3min 27.81sec @ 12 MB/s

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive - Tough Review

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: This was actually a rough review for me to do, not something I expected from something as simple as a flash drive. This is going to be a pretty long review for a flash drive.

First, lets get the pros out of the way.

- Great USB 3.0 read speeds.
- Faster than USB 2.0 write speeds.
- Great USB 2.0 performance.
- Lightweight.
- Activity light indicates USB 2.0/3.0. (Flash speed)
- Slider is convenient. No cover to lose.

Here are the drives specs based on CrystalDiskMark 64-bit. Listing the best speeds achieved after multiple tests. The important numbers are the Sequential Reads/Writes.

USB 3.0 50MB MB/s:

Seq Read: 63.91
Seq Write: 19.36
512K Read: 58.95
512K Write: 13.26
4K Read: 6.763
4K Write: 1.473

USB 3.0 1000MB MB/s:

Seq Read: 75.31
Seq Write: 17.31
512K Read: 67.93
512K Write: 0.404
4K Read: 8.193
4K Write: 0.026

USB 3.0 4000MB MB/s:

Seq Read: 76.77
Seq Write: 17.47
512K Read: 68.89
512K Write: 0.384
4K Read: 6.933
4K Write: 0.062

USB 2.0 50MB MB/s:

Seq Read: 33.49
Seq Write: 14.10
512K Read: 33.06
512K Write: 11.39
4K Read: 4.269
4K Write: 1.435

USB 2.0 1000MB MB/s:

Seq Read: 34.19
Seq Write: 13.97
512K Read: 32.97
512K Write: 0.426
4K Read: 5.000
4K Write: 0.019

On USB 3.0, it takes about 4 minutes to transfer a single 3.9GB uncompressed Fraps video file to the drive. With it's transfer speed settling at around 16.5 MB/s to 17 MB/s.

To read that same file it's transfer speed topped out at about 75 MB/s. Much faster.

The averages for bulk transfers of smaller files, such as music, were only slightly slower. Writes ranged from about 15 MB/s to 15.5 MB/s.

For the sake of comparison, here are some numbers from a couple USB 2.0 drive I have on hand. The fastest being a Patriot XT , and a slower "standard" 2.0 drive, also made by Patriot.

USB 2.0 50MB MB/s: XT

Seq Read: 31.83
Seq Write: 11.16
512K Read: 31.92
512K Write: 2.957
4K Read: 11.48
4K Write: 0.016

USB 2.0 50MB MB/s: Standard

Seq Read: 24.55
Seq Write: 7.701
512K Read: 24.40
512K Write: 4.619
4K Read: 2.950
4K Write: 0.846

So there you have all the numbers I got from my testing. This Corsair Slider Flash Voyager USB 3.0 is clearly faster than any USB 2.0 drives I have, especailly in the reads where it's vastly faster. Now on to the "tough" part of the review.

Cons: Slower than expected USB 3.0 write speeds. (See other thoughts)

You have to hold the slider open when inserting the drive into most USB ports, or it will close on you. Just hold your finger on the back of the drive and you're fine.

Other Thoughts: In the cons, I list slower than expected USB 3. 0 write speeds, and that's what made this review a bit tougher than I expected for a simple USB flash drive.

When I review an item, one of the things I do is look at other people reviews to see if I have any of the same results, problems, or other similarities. I also look at benchmarks on trusted sites if they are available. Depending on what I learn, I may gear some of my testing, or do extra testing, to target specifics of other peoples results, good or bad.

In this case, it was the USB 3.0 write speeds.

You have a lot of reviews saying they had poor write speeds compared to other drives, and much lower than advertized by Corsair. I noticed my numbers were roughly the same on the writes as many of the people were listing in the review. So I decided to try and find out why.

As far as the advertized speeds go, at the time of this review, I can find no "official" listings of this specific drives speeds. No on Corsair's product page, and not here on the Newegg product page. However I can find benchmarks that show the drive getting much better write performance than I am getting.

After a bit more searching, I came across a forum thread on Corsair's website that claims there were two versions of this drive, the older CMFSL3, and this one, the CMFSL3B. According to the thread, the CMFSL3 had "been discontinued because of the availability of the the components. CMFSL3B-32GB is the replacement for it and it is slower then the first gen. "

I have no way of knowing if this is correct or not, I did email Corsair to ask, but I have limited time to do this review, so I can't wait for a response. However it would explain the slower speeds than seen on older models of this drive.

If this information is correct, it would be nice to see it officially listed somewhere.

So what makes it tough is how do I rate the drive? While I am not able to hit the speeds seen on what may be older versions of this drive, I have to base my review on how this version of the drive performs today, based on how it's advertized. Like I said above, there are no official speeds listed on Corsair's product page, or here on Newegg.

This is why I gave the drive a 5 Egg rating. It is faster than USB 2.0, and it gave me no problems what so ever during my testing. Based on that I can say that it's a solid USB 3.0 flash drive, and while there may be faster options out there, this drive worked well for me.

I will do a followup review later if anything changes or the drive gives me any problems, since I see some people saying the drive failed after 4-6 months. As of today however, the drive is working wonderfully.

Tested on two different systems.

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
FX-8350
Windows 7 Ultimate 64

ASRock Z97 Killer
Intel G3258
Windows 7 Ultimate 64

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

1 out of 5 eggswon't touch corsair stuff anymore...

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-64GB

Pros: Design

Cons: Corrupt after several month light use

Other Thoughts: I just used it to back up my important documents every week. As a researcher, I kept my experimental data/lab notes/manuscripts there. It just corrupted after several months. Luckily I still have the original copy on the office computer.
