The Beyerdynamic DT880 is a personal favorite. They have great bottom end along with terrific detail and clarity. And although they look (and are) big, they are so comfortable you forget you're wearing them. They're handmade in Germany and all the parts are replaceable so they'll last forever. They're available in 3 impedances: 32 ohm optimized for portable devices - 250 ohm for home audio components - and 600 ohm for audiophiles using a dedicated headphone amplifier.
This review is from: Beyerdynamic DT 880 600 Ohm Audiophile Headphones Handmade in Germany
Pros: I cannot say anything bad about these wonderful headphones. The mids are full warm and crisp, the bass is full and excellent when paired with a software that can manage the EQ like a mixer. When added with an ASUS Xonar STX sound card, you will need a card or AMP to power these babies, it makes for a powerful sound set-up. I cannot give anymore high remarks to this masterpiece of German golden butter. The headphones have nice grip on the head without feeling too tight but enough to head bang whenever you feel like it to extreme proportions. To put it simply, they are like clouds on your ears. If you go on the Beyerdynamic website there are replacement parts for the earcups and headbands for most, if not all, of their headsets. The semi-open design gives you the best of both open and closed headphones which is wonderful for anything and everything since it is in between. I have looked around at Bose, Sennheiser and Shure; all cheap plastic. Although they may have decent sound, the build quality is awful! That is why I went with the all metal, except the headband and padding, pair of headphones; DT880's. You CAN NOT go wrong with these headphones. The first time I put them on, I could not stop listening to music and messing with the sound cards EQ's to get the right balance. The Germans always make good stuff that will last for years to come. Overall, 5/5 & 10/10 if you have the money, this is the way to go. Buy these!
Cons: None at the moment.
Other Thoughts: If there is any sound card I would pair with these, it would be the ASUS Xonar STX. Wonderful and easy to install and use. Full virtual 7.1, Dolby Pro Logic II and simple Dolby Headphone software with the card. FYI: DO NOT USE THE DISC THAT COMES WITH THE ASUS Xonar STX, go on their website and download the latest drivers for the card. Also, you need a free 4-pin Molex for the card to power it. I usually am a little weary to try any ASUS products now, except their monitors, but this product gets the seal of approval from me so far!
