Other Thoughts: Took a chance and ordered this ELPLP49 lamp for my Epson 8350 projector. It seems that all of the knock-off lamps are dim right out of the box, and usually start to smell like burnt/melting plastic within a few minutes of use. This bulb has none of those problems.

This bulb is every bit as bright as my OEM Epson lamp. It never stank or smelled the house up of burning plastic. The only question left is how long it will last.

Even OEM bulbs die out way before their advertised 4,000 hours. My first Epson bulb died in around 1,100. My second OEM bulb is creeping up on 1,500 hours, but it's started to get very dim, and even in a pitch black room, can be very unwatchable if it's a dark movie or a low-quality video.

I'll report back if it dies prematurely. As of now, my plan is to go a couple months and probably grab a couple more just to have them on hand.

If you're in the market for an ELPLP49 replacement, this is the one to take a chance on. It's either that, or pony up to Epson.

Pros: Great picture quality. These are the manufactures bulbs.

Cons: This is my 2nd replacement bulb. The first two (including the one that came with the unit) lasted 1700-1900 hours. I would be shocked if this one lasted 4000 like advertised.

Pros: There are a lot of aftermarket versions that many have had issues with from premature failure to damaging their projector. This is the true Epson factory replacement. It works fine.

Cons: None. Identical to my old one in looks and performance.

Other Thoughts: Next time, if I don't upgrade to 3D, I may just try the lamp only rather than the full replacement cartridge to save money. I can fiddle with my old one without much risk now. Take this opportunity to clean/replace your air filter too.
