2 out of 5 eggsDied after 18 months.

Pros: Nice screen. Navigation works well.

Cons: Died after 18 months (during use). Would not start beyond the "Garmin" splash screen. Would not do a hard reset. This is a well recognized fault if you search the Web. Phoned Garmin tech support - confirmed that it had bricked itself, and outside warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsGarmin Nuvi GPS, YES!!!

Pros: I love using a unit that is truly dedicated to GPS functionality. Therefore, this Garmin nuvi 1490t blasted all my expectations. Responsiveness, accuracy, traffic updates, quick-recaculation, easy to use, and the conscience of never having to worry about being loss is a bonus. Another thing is having strong signals almost everywhere or possibility it has strong signals everywhere. Therefore a unit built for a single purpose is better than a unit built for multiple purposes.

Although a cell phone primary functions is calling, it has other unspecialize functions like texting, internet browsing, and GPS functions. A cell phone can't handle all these functions well (efficiently). Utilizing a phone GPS is like using a paper map.
Never use a cell phone GPS because everyone here knows that it sucks. My cell phone GPS constantly lose signal, give wrong directions, and sometimes does not function at all!!!

Cons: A very very tiny white-line appears at the bottom of the screen. Hmmmm.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst GPS, Decent Little Device

Pros: Large screen is nice. I'm not accustomed to glancing over at a device for directions. So, if I have to take my eyes off the road, I'd like to see what I need to see quickly and get my eyes back to what's in front of me. Pretty cool feature tells you which lane or lanes you can be in to make the turn/merge/exit you need to.In Los Angeles, sometimes the exits are 2-3 lanes and it's nice to know you don't have to get into the *far* right or left lanes to make your exit. (Before merging or exiting, a little diagram pops up showing you the lane(s) you need to be in.)

Cons: The "free lifetime traffic" is a little misleading. To enable traffic, you have to agree to be served up ads (so free isn't really free). The ads can be distracting, so I virtually never use it. Traffic is better/more accurate with Google Maps on my cellphone, anyway.

Touch screen can be a little finicky, but it's really not bad. Just don't expect it to react to touch like a cell phone.

Other Thoughts: I had never needed GPS services beyond what my phone could provide, but I recently moved to Los Angeles and needed something for apartment hunting in a new town. I was actually pleasantly surprised with some of the features. I had used my phone's GPS extensively in the past, but a dedicated device has some features you won't find on your phone.

2 out of 5 eggsMap updates don't work

Pros: Size easy to read looks good.

Cons: Map updates say not enough memory to load firmware update. So map updates don't load as can not get past this. Life time map useless as not enough memory. I have not added any thing no music pictures and it still does not work. I would not buy this one.

Other Thoughts: I have an very old Tom Tom and it works better. I would pass on this GPS as it's use less. I've gone to tech sites and they say the Garmin support laughed at them.

1 out of 5 eggsBad support Poor Quality

Pros: Not difficult to learn. Speaks the street names.

Cons: Map updates can only be done ONCE. If something happens during the update process your unit if fried. Email support states the obvious then ignores you. Phone support people laufh at you.

Other Thoughts: Buy the cheapest one that works for you, then throw it away when it get annoyng.

2 out of 5 eggsTurning off ADS turns off traffic

Pros: more responsive than 265 nuvi and 760 nuvi. Good size, bright screen.

Cons: ADS/Coupons pop up constantly. Per Garmin; the only way to turn off pop-ups is to turn off Lifetime Traffic! They report that this is how the Traffic feature is paid for.
Maps remain below par. Commercial data poor.

4 out of 5 eggsHandy when you need it

Pros: Mostly works well, good price, big help in navigating strange towns and cities.

Cons: Can't turn off the "recalculating" ditty that seems to play constantly sometimes. Slow boot, sometime says the target address doesn't exist, sometimes it just announces "traffic ahead" when the road is mostly clear and little traffic. Only one map update that we have to use within three months.

Other Thoughts: We have ignored it a lot when it tried to take us through some known high congestion areas but it barks at you. We just turned off the sound. We use it little on the highway but when we get to a destination town it is great for guiding us to an address we put in for a restaurant, store or hotel and returning us back to our original destination. Just how hard would it be for the world class programmers at garmin to give us an on/off button fot the "recalculating" ditty?
