4 out of 5 eggscould be a little more durable

Pros: I've used this in my backpack for a couple years now. Installed in this enclosure is a 1TB 2.5" WD Red drive. Mostly, I use this for file migrations and the like.

Transfer speeds are great even over USB2 (See other thoughts for a general speed breakdown).

The cable it comes with has been sufficient in length for my needs and has stood up to lots of travel time in my bag.

Every USB port that I've connected it to has has sufficient power and didn't require the second USB plug that they provide on this cable.

The case itself is durable....however there are some cons (below)

Cons: The carry pouch and tool is kind of a waste of time. Honestly, they are cheap and went in the trash straight away.

I wish the screws that hold in the drive were a little better. A couple of times removing the drive and putting it back in have really stripped out the plastic and also the screws. I've since drilled out the holes in favor of slightly larger screws.

Other Thoughts: Speeds over USB2 have varied depending on device, but I usually see a combined average of about 15MB/s write and 18MB/s read.

Speeds on USB3 seem even more varied based on file size and type, but mostly are averaging about 40MB/s for write and 45MB/s for read.

Sometimes, these numbers are a lot higher, but this is my average number from many many devices including servers, laptops, desktops, and NASs.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes the job but build quality isn't awesome

Pros: I like the look and the compact size. Data transfer speeds are really decent.

I've got a 1TB WD Red drive in there and it works really well.

Cons: The plastic end caps are cheap and I stripped one of the screws out when installing the HDD. I didn't use a lot of pressure and the head just mangled almost instantly.

I swapped out the screws with more substantial ones and used a little electrical tape for good measure.

It still does what I need it for, it just isn't very pretty any more.

Other Thoughts: I carry this in my bad every day to migrate users to and from computers when we swap them out. I like the USB3 speeds for that purpose as all of our computers in the company now have USB3.0 ports on them. With my WD Red drive, it's about 90MB/s read and write. Fast enough for the application I'm using it for.

1 out of 5 eggsLook for something else

Pros: Might work well as a paper weight but it maybe too light.

Cons: On the 9th use it failed.

Other Thoughts: You have been warned

3 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

Pros: Inexpensive.

Cons: I bought two of these and one was dead on arrival (DOA). NewEgg gave me a replacement after I mailed the bad one back. Neither of the enclosures work using a cheap, no name, un-powered 2.0 hub. I am not sure if this is an issue with the hub or with the enclosures. The enclosures worked fine in a powered USB 2.0 hub (Belkin) and an un-powered USB 3.0 hub (Orico) as well as being plugged directly into my PC.

Other Thoughts: I'm writing the one that I received DOA off as a fluke. You may not be able to use these with a cheap, no-name USB hub. Since the hard drives are powered via the USB ports you may want to use a powered USB hub - or plug it directly into your computer just to be safe.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great for Me

Pros: Durable case and connector.

Cons: Delivery time.

Other Thoughts: I have learned to be careful about whether an item ships from Newegg in the US, or whether is ships from a vendor in China. I have several other enclosures, and I bought two of these. My other enclosure usually fail because they are two-piece units that fall apart, or the connectors fail. The large standard USB connector definitely seems like the better choice.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what it says it will

Pros: Small, light, professional looking, fast, works as advertised

Cons: Ships from China. Newegg should do a better job of making this clear on product page as they're now representing resellers. Bare aluminum inside case - wrapped HDD in paper before inserting in case to eliminate possibility of electrical shorts.

Other Thoughts: Replaced my laptop 500G HDD with new 240G SSD. Put the old drive in this enclosure, moved all old files into one folder and use the drive as backup for all my documents, pics, etc. using SyncToy on a regular basis. If the SSD fails (doubt it, Intel), I'll just pull the oper. sys files out of the folder, install old drive back in my laptop and I'll be good to go.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality

Pros: Usb 3.0.

Cons: Was defective right out of the box. Because of it being so inexpensive it is not worth pursuing even though I could use it.

Other Thoughts: I will not buy from this manufacturer again.

1 out of 5 eggsNOT OPERATIONAL WITH SANDISK SSD

Pros: Well constructed metal case. Simple disassembly.

Cons: After purchasing this well constructed HD enclosure I installed a SanDisk 120GB SSD and found it to not work and I could not locate detailed specifications confirming that this enclosure did or did not work with SSD components. Unfortunately I must continuing searching for a well built and compatiable USB 3 HD enclosure that will work well with the SSD/

Other Thoughts: Disappointed to receive this enclosure only to find it does not work for me.
