1 out of 5 eggsEpic Fail

Pros: Cheap

Cons: No 64 bit functionality, even with the 64 bit drivers

Other Thoughts: Bought five of these for traveling users who have ultrabooks. They just need occasional hard line when hotel wifi is abysmal. Win 8 x64 recognized them, but could not start the device. Pulled the 64 bit drivers from the net and loaded but no go. Checked on Syba's site at http://www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=1163&currentPage=1 and there, on the software requirements tab it says 'Windows 7 32-bit Only'. Really? In 2014? 32 bit only? My bad for going the cheap route.

2 out of 5 eggsAll of them are of the same MAC Address

Pros: This thing is convienent when you dont want to spend time inserting PCI netcards.

Cons: All 5 I bought have the same MAC address so that they can't be working for me. I need them to have different hardware addresses so that I can get additional data usage.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize that this product was made with the same MAC addresses.

However, our newer models do have different MAC addresses.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

3 out of 5 eggs50 - 50

Pros: The first one I installed (end of 2011) worked properly on a Windows XP notebook, and still does. And these are very inexpensive.

Cons: The instructions Syba support mentioned in another review below are almost entirely in Hieroglyphics (Chinese). Why is that? And the so-called "drivers" on the CD are actually setup.exe files. In addition, even after you run the setup, you still have to update the driver through device manager after it's installed. Combine this with the Hieroglyphic instructions (plus the compression method used, described below), and there are going to be a lot of unhappy (English speaking) customers.

As far as success with these USB network ports, I had bought two of them at the end of 2011, one for a need I had then, and one for the future. Well, the first one I used worked fine, and still works fine. But the second one is a different story, now that the future has arrived. This one was installed on a Windows 7 64 Bit Tower PC this morning, and it does not work. First, the Win 7 64 bit "drivers" were not on the CD, so I had to download them from Syba's web site. I uncompressed them, ran the setup, then "updated" the drivers, and Windows installed it and could "see" the device. But it wouldn't get a network address. So I rebooted, but still no network address. Looking at my network switch, I noticed the port that it was plugged in to wasn't lighting up. So I switched ports with another that was lit (so I knew it was a good port on the switch), but that light went out. So I switched network cables, but the port still would not light up. So then I switched USB ports on the PC, eventually trying all six of them. And it never worked. So the second one is trash. And thus the title of my review, 50 - 50.

Also, the files are compressed in a RAR file. Why? They're on a mini CD that can hold 225 MB and the files are about 12 MB, unzipped. A LOT of people don't have 7-Zip or other programs that can unzip RAR files sitting on their PC just waiting for Syba to give them a RAR file. Syba has done the same thing with the driver on their web site; it's compressed as a RAR file. Why not at least Zip them up, since Windows XP and newer all have Zip support built in? This seems thoughtless to me ... just like the Hieroglyphic instructions.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with Win7 64-bit

Pros: Works just fine with Windows7 64-bit even though both Newegg and Syba's web page says it dose not. I just downloaded the 64-bit driver off Syba's page and everything installed just fine. Tested it on my network and it was good to go.

Cons: Little cheaply built, but it was $7. In one of my USB ports it does not stay solidly connected to the PC and device manager drops it occasionally. Reinserted it several times and it has been fine since.

3 out of 5 eggsFinicky, but functional

Pros: It works, sorta.
It's inexpensive.

Cons: Only 100Mbps, only USB 2.0

Other Thoughts: I have ordered two of these. On both of them I noticed that some plugs fit fine and others do not lock in at all. One of them uses the opposite cabling from what you would expect and it does not appear to be auto-MDX compatible (in other words, I have noticed I have had to use a crossover cable where a straight-cable should be used; or a straight cable where a crossover should be used)

That being said, it works, I can always make an extra cable, and I have this, a straight cable, a crossover cable, and a crossover adapter in my dispatch bag, which all fit, so in a pinch I always have what I need.

1 out of 5 eggsNot good at all

Pros: The indicator light works.

Cons: The adapter has no plug and play functionality.
The driver CD contains nondescript folders with drivers that do not work anyway.

If you are trying to replace or diagnose a faulty network card, having to download the drivers ruins the point.

Other Thoughts: One is better off getting a slightly bigger and more expensive adapter. If you have a wireless device (using windows) but no wireless at certain locations such as at home or at work, then this might be useful.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We do apologize for the nondescript folders on our CD. Please note that we are currently updating this CD, and in the future customers will receive a much better organized CD with a much better user instruction sheet as well.

Our technical support team is available to help 9am-5pm M-F. Feel free to contact us during those business hours at support@sybausa.com

SYBA offers an on-line RMA form, the user can easily fill out the form and submit it for a quick RMA return and exchange. It is SYBA's policy to answer all customer inquiries within 24 hours (M-F)

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great after installation. No trouble.

Cons: Requires experience/understanding of driver installation.

Other Thoughts: Just had to figure out which driver version to install from the included CD. (Really not a difficult task for some one that understands how to install drivers... like me :-p)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Good

Pros: Wouldn't work with the drivers on the mini-cd rom provided. After hounding the internet I found one at the SYBA web site. Installed it and it worked first go down.
Very happy. We'll see if that true in six months or so.

Cons: Driver problem on the mini-cd.

1 out of 5 eggsCan't find drivers

Pros: None

Cons: Neither Win XP SP3 nor Win 7HP can find the appropriate drivers on the provided mini-CD.

Other Thoughts: Can't say if it is good or bad since I can't get it to work. Maybe you get what you pay for.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Chuck,

We are sorry you were unable to get this card installed in your systems. This product's users manual indicate the actual paths to install the driver in a given operating system. 3 out of 5 eggswhat you save is what you get

Pros: Cheap and...."worth" every penny.

Cons: The first unit I recieved was non-functional. Newegg replaced it convinently enough. However the second one seems to sometimes work and othertimes just immediately fail driver installs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

There is a very easy and quick way to test this product. Please contact SYBA support team. Please provide Windows version and type of network setup you have in your e-mail

We are more than willing to provide all of our customers with prompt exchanges whenever a product becomes defective.
