5 out of 5 eggsUnreal performance

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This is by far one of the best upgrades I've done in a long time!

Windows boot and shut down times have been cut down significantly, with all applications opening up virtually instantly. Load times in games are just laughable now. But the most pleasant surprise was how painless the migration process was.

Samsung migration tool clones your OS drive right from within Windows, and makes it extremely simple. Copied all content from a 500GB WD Blue (about 50% full) in around 40 minutes (SATA to SATA). As long as you close out of all applications/files, you shouldn't have any issues. Also disabled my network card to avoid problems.

One shut down and drive swap later, picked up right from where I left off. Except now with a Windows 7 WEI score of 7.7 for HD transfer rates, and an overall score of 7.6 (up from 5.9).

Cons: Already had been exposed to SSD performance at work, just wishing I hadn't held off for almost 3 years before upgrading my home gaming rig. Was mostly waiting for the $/GB ratio to become more reasonable though.

Be warned that you may develop SSD-itis, and be inclined to upgrade all of your OS drives to SSDs. Already considering a Samsung 1TB SSD for my Mac OS X drive (hackintosh).

Had some initial concerns about the overall longevity of SSDs as well, but research addressed these fears, considering my average daily read/write amounts.

Other Thoughts: SAMSUNG 850 Pro drive went on sale almost immediately after purchasing this drive, and includes a promo code for Assassin's Creed Unity. But didn't want to deal with hassle of returns and re-cloning, though from SSD to SSD, it probably would've been like 10 minutes. Too happy with this drive to send it back - highly recommend it!

1 out of 5 eggsDied with no warning

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: When it worked, it worked really well.
- It was fast
- It was a trusted brand (Samsung)

Cons: When it worked it worked, but now it's dead. It died without warning. I lost everything, except what I had backed up.
- it WAS fast
- it WAS a trusted brand (Samsung)

It will be a while before I buy any more samsung ssd's. I am looking for a more reliable option.

2 out of 5 eggsGood speeds - BAD quality.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Good speeds..

Cons: This "SSD" which I expected to really make my computer much more reliable has now failed on me. It has forced me to erase the disk due to "invalid node structure". That was the only way I could get it to turn back on. My computer would not start up after restarting the system a couple weeks ago or so. Since erasing the disk, the system turns on, still has decent speeds but now restarts my computer randomly just like my old-stock hard drive. This is horrible, I now have to deal with getting a replacement and due to the fine print!!!! I AM GETTING A REFURBISHED MODEL IN RETURN.. That is your 3-year warranty, if it'll even go that far.. You get a choice of only a reworked model.. I am so disappointed in this purchase. Not to mention this was my first time dealing newegg, samsung, and .. seagate got thrown in there due to stupid workers at samsung. .. this has been truly an awful experience. I can only PREY!! that my "new" refurbished model will surpass the life that this "SSD" got me.. A whole 140 days, not so solid.

Other Thoughts: ... I'm kind of speechless. I could go on though.. but let's not.

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the best SSDs on the market!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Quite simply one of the best SSDs on the market!

Yes, there was an issues that resulted in slow read speeds of older data and some of the other reviews have stated but I don't (unlike others here on this site) that giving this product a "1 Egg" review is justified. Samsung pushed out a fix for the issue. Now, if they had not fixed then yes, this product would indeed deserve a "1 Egg" review but again, they fixed it.

I call upon those people who did write a "1 Egg" review to update their review to reflect the fact that Samsung fixed the issue. Let's face it, SSDs are still new territory in terms of computer tech and thus will have issues that come about. It's what a company does after an issue crops up that determines how good a product is. In this case, Samsung stepped up to the plate and did the right thing.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought this SSD over at another site because they had a lower price than Newegg at the time I bought it.

5 out of 5 eggs500GB SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I have noticed a significant reduction in load times from a cold start. Also, programs load much quicker. The Window 7 score went from 5.9 to 7.4

Cons: None at this time

Other Thoughts: Only been using this drive for about 1 week at the time of submission. I am using the Samsung as my main drive for programs and document storage. All media and download files are stored on 4 other 1 TB drives.
SYSTEM:
Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe
CPU: i7 920 - 2.67 MHz
Memory: 12 GB
Video: AMD R4850 (soon to be upgraded)

1 out of 5 eggsTLC Flash bug, not MLC

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Flooded market with cheap SSD drives which brought down the price of the competition.

Cons: TLC Flash bug for which there is a software fix. It is available on Samsung's website and I suggest that anyone with an 840 basic or 840 EVO get the app to re-flash their drives.

Other Thoughts: My apologies on my last review. I meant to say TLC flash instead of MLC flash. Most modern SSDs are made with MLC flash where Samsung has used the new lower-cost TLC flash in the 840 and 840 EVO. The problem is the same and it involves old data that has started to decay thus causing the on-board controller to have slow read issues. In some cases it is really bad. I've done the fix and it takes about an hour for the 500GB model plus back-ups, removing them from RAID array and system, doing the fix x 2, rebuilding arrays and copying backups back onto them. So in reality it takes around 5 or 6 hours to do everything in a two drive RAID 0 array. Time will tell if it is a permanent fix but I have my doubts. Google a program called HD tach to check your drives.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Unhappy about MLC flash bug

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast and lower cost with a slick app to make them even faster.

Cons: Fast and lower cost with a slick app to make them even faster. I list these as cons since this is what convinced me to buy 8 of these drives. With the recent revelation of the MLC flash memory voltage decay and the necessary firmware "fix", I honestly don't trust the longevity of these drives anymore.

Other Thoughts: I have five of these 500GB drives with one in my laptop and four in two RAID arrays. I also have three others in different sizes. Now they ALL have to be flashed with new firmware because of the firmware bug. The two RAID systems will have to be cloned and dis-arrayed because the firmware fix doesn't work with RAID. The firmware fix itself is quick but the extreme inconvenience is not. It will take me hours to go through all of these and then what? Another firmware fix down the road? I have lost all confidence in these drives now. If it took Samsung 6 months or more to realize that they had a major issue with how the voltage decays in the MLC flash then how can they know how it will last over the long haul? I can't see this being good for read/write speeds over time.
