5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Migration software - great for converting from HDD
Speed, speed... and did I mention speed?

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Right now running a combo SSD (programs) and HDD (files0 for now and it works well enough. After getting this drive, I don't think I'll go back to HDDs again.

4 out of 5 eggsData Migration Failed Repeatedly

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: 1. Fast!!!
2. Bigger than the 250GB Samsung SSD that I'm replacing with it.

Cons: 1. Samsung's data migration software failed, repeatedly.
2. Samsung's data migration software failed, repeatedly.
3. I had to rebuild the rig's entire OS and software, from the ground up.

Other Thoughts: I stuck with Samsung, because I was very happy with the original SSD that I was running my executables from. The forced rebuild frustrates me. This was a Samsung to Samsung clone.
I would have given this SSD 5 stars, if I'd been building from the ground up. I wasn't.

5 out of 5 eggsReplaced HD in Mid-2007 iMac

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Instantaneous operation. Im floored with the speed over the old standard Western Digital hard drive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I also purchased the Icy Dock EZ Convert Pro for Mac and that fit was EXCELLENT. This SSD fits perfectly in the Icy Dock and the Icy Dock fits PERFECTLY in the iMac. The HD swap took me 40 minutes? Im no techie either. Used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive and it took about 4 hrs to load up to the SSD. Very easy process and my Apple iMac is now roaring everywhere! Quits apps in a snap, opens in 1, maybe 2 Apple bounces. Hey, Im very happy about it! Get it, you won't be sad you did.

5 out of 5 eggsBuy The Thing

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Consistency is the hallmark of excellence...and this drive delivers. Great price/performance ratio. Thinking of tying 4 of these into a RAID array for video editing.

Cons: Samsung doesn't send it to you free via a fat man in a red suit,

Other Thoughts: A great SSD. Period. Total no-brainer purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsYes it is really as good as everyone says

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: As fast as advertised. The software for migration and installation is absolutely brilliant. Probably the easiest hard drive install/cloning you could ever hope for.

Cons: They still aren't free.

Other Thoughts: Ordered yesterday morning, and my relative proximity to the Mississauga Newegg depot meant I had my new drive by 10:30 am this morning. Now that's fast delivery!
When I opened the box and looked at the installation instructions, they seemed rather sparse, and included pictures of a usb to ssd dongle for cloning that did not come with the version I ordered. I thought, uh oh!.
Put the cd in, and installed data migration and Samsung Magician software. Didn't know what else to do , so I hooked up the drive normally inside my case with a sata 3 cable I had from my motherboard purchase. Rebooted and poof! up pops the migration software, just like it said it would. ssd recognized, and waiting for cloning. Hit the button twice, once to start the process and once to finish it. Took about a half hour for 250 ish gigs.

Launched the Magician software, clicked "maximum performance" , rebooted when prompted, and that was it.

Pretty much the advertised read/writes from the benchmark, 15 second boot time! I was worried when I read up on installing ssd's and saw that some people had a few issues and had to play with it, but this was ridiculously easy.
Fantastic service from Newegg, and install software that did everything except plug the cables in. You can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesomeness

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very fast. BecnhmarkCpu has similar models at fast speeds at reasonable prices.

Cons: Runs a little on the hot side when sending lots of data through it. Consider leaving it in a cool spot. During normal operation it has no issues.

Other Thoughts: Consider screwing it on a plate to keep cooler.

2 out of 5 eggsThis SDD can fail in a catastrophic way

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: When it was working the SSD was screaming fast, and windows 8.1 would boot up after post in 4 seconds or less. I was absolutely infatuated with this SDD

Cons: The SDD failed in a spectacular way that at first made me thing my Z87-Pro mobo was bad as after post windows would start to load, then get stuck infinitely in the loading animation. Upon attempting the automated repair process, or trying to boot to the windows 8.1 or windows 7 install disks I found that windows would load the files, then just go to a blank screen. After removing every device and peripheral from my Mobo, but the DVD drive I finally narrowed the scope of the problem to the SDD.

At this point I tried connecting the SSD to open SATA ports on two other computer's running windows 7, and both of those PCs experienced identical problems.

Finally I connected the EVO 840 SDD to my laptop which was logged in using windows 7 via SATA to USB adapter windows appeared to read the drive, however anytime I tried to access the drive from Computer -> E: explorer.exe would be come unresponsive and require a restart (which would fail and remain locked), if I tried to disk management to check the drive the window was unable to display any data, and when I went to the device manager and tried to populate the drive data, it caused device manager to become unresponsive to which I have to hard power-cycle the laptop via holding the start button because windows would be stuck in the shutdown process indefinitely.

Other Thoughts: I have had a few HDD failures in the past, and when they bit the dust, they had the decency to be easily diagnosed. When this SDD fails, it apparently has a chance to be completely bricked to the point that any OS, or application that attempts to reference it will become unresponsive which prevents it from being reformatted or repaired. Even the Samsung software for data migration and firmware updates become completely locked up.

Attempting to reach the customer support has been a hassle as their hours of operations are only 9am-9pm, which is difficult for me since I work the night shift and am either alseep, heading to work, or at work during the time when they have representatives available. Additionally their website email function is broken as two different PCs and two different web browsers have been unable to select a "category" for their web form for the nature of the inquiry so I was unable to progress to detailing and submitting my inquiry.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Super fast loading on anything put of this. Windows loads super fast and puts me straight into my games with ease. On bf4 I'm the first if not one of the first to load in and start capturing flags. In all my FPS games or any game that doesn't require me to wait on everyone to load I'm there playing a good minute or more before my friends with hhd giving me an advantage over opponents still loading

Cons: Wish I would have got more space. 500gb is great im not yet half full on mine, but should have gone for the 1tb

Also it's outer shell is plastic, I expected thin metal. How ever it's in my SSD tray tucked away in my case so nothing could physically damage it

5 out of 5 eggsLovin' it

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, cooler, battery life

Cons: Wish it was a Pro

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace the original 500GB Seagate hybrid drive that came with my Samsung Series 5 ultrabook before the drive died on me. I used the Apricorn USB 3.0 wire to clone the OEM drive to the Samsung SSD and everything worked flawlessly. I use this laptop as the machine that sits on my lap in the evening for casual gaming, music storage and ebook repository. It's also the machine that I travel with since it's small and light and I've found that since I installed the SSD the battery lasts significantly longer. I'm pleased and would not go back to a regular HDD.
