Sensor & Processor The camera features the APS-C, 16M X-Trans CMOS II sensor. This sensor incorporates an original color filter array with a highly random pattern, eliminating the need for an optical low-pass filter (OLPF). These filters are used in conventional systems to inhibit moiré at the expense of resolution. The X-Trans CMOS II sensor array lets the sensor capture unfiltered light from the lens, achieving an unprecedented level of resolution. The EXR Processor II processing engine provides quick performance throughout the entire camera system, achieving start-up time of 0.5 sec, shutter lag of 0.005 sec, shooting interval time of 0.5 sec, and an electronic shutter speed of up to 1/32000 sec. The layout of components and wiring has been carefully designed to reduce image noise at high ISO settings and enables the ISO to be extended to 51200. Even at the ultra-high ISO setting, the camera produces deep blacks with minimal noise. This makes it easy to shoot hand-held even in low-light conditions.
Intelligent Hybrid AF The camera's Intelligent Hybrid AF system combines the excellent autofocus speed of Phase Detection AF with the strong low light performance of Contrast AF. The phase detection elements on the image sensor deliver autofocusing speeds of up to 0.06 sec. A new algorithm has also enhanced performance in low light and low contrast conditions. The AF-C can be used together with advanced subject motion prediction technology to perform continuous shooting at 8.0 fps. Six different AF modes are available to meet the needs of various shooting situations.
