5 out of 5 eggsGreat Utilitarian Adapter

This review is from: UNITEK HDD/SSD USB 3.0 to SATA & IDE Adapter, on/off switch and 12V/2A Power Adapter

Pros: Small form factor.
Cables and drivers included.
USB 3.0
Versatile ports for all old and current I/O interfaces.
Power switch.
Convenient one touch power backup button (if you use it for that)
Fantastic Unitek customer service. (thanks John!)
Usual good Newegg replacement service.

Cons: 1st one defective. (s#%t happens!)

Other Thoughts: I have friends with computers ranging in age from new to over 10 years old. So I need a tool that allows me to access old and new drives for retrieval of data as (or before) they die off. My old adapter was still working but was larger and only offered USB 2.0 speeds.
The first Unitek adapter came quickly. I was impressed with the form factor and the fact that it came with all necessary cables and software. Unfortunately, the first unit was defective (no power) and I had to wait for a replacement to complete my review. Fortunately, it was covered by the warranty and Newegg got another one out to me about a week later. What was especially remarkable was Unitek's reaction after contacting them. They indicated correctly that it should be replaced through the Newegg system but made several follow-up calls to make sure I received it and that it was to my satisfaction. I wish all electronics manufacturers offered this kind of customer service. Wow!
After this experience I would not hesitate to purchase another Unitek product.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works great for me.

This review is from: UNITEK HDD/SSD USB 3.0 to SATA & IDE Adapter, on/off switch and 12V/2A Power Adapter

Pros: It works, and the cost is more than reasonable.

Cons: Short IDE power cable. It could be more sturdy, but I'm certain that if UNITEK built it so, it would cost a good deal more. I don't think the magic copy button placement is ideal, as it is very easy to press it when you don't intend to do so.

Other Thoughts: I thought it wasn't working for (3.5") IDE drives when I first tried to use it. What I found is that it either refuses to recognize the IDE drive, or displays it as having no data if the drive's jumper settings are not in the MASTER (Drive 0) position. I didn't see any mention of this in the scant documentation. I had no issues at all with SATA drives.

HOWEVER, this thing worked great once I got past the jumper setting misunderstanding. ALSO, I sent an email to UNITEK about my problems with IDE drives, and a tech support person actually PHONED me a couple of days later to see if he could help -- now that's some of the best customer service I've ever experienced. [At the time of the call, I had convinced myself that I had already erased the IDE drives that I was having trouble with. I later figured out that the issue was the jumper settings.] I highly recommend this device to anyone who needs its functionality. At this price, you can't lose as long as you treat it gently.

This review is from: UNITEK HDD/SSD USB 3.0 to SATA & IDE Adapter, on/off switch and 12V/2A Power Adapter

5 out of 5 eggsDefinitely recommend.

This review is from: UNITEK HDD/SSD USB 3.0 to SATA & IDE Adapter, on/off switch and 12V/2A Power Adapter

Pros: Supports all interfaces for all hard drive types. Small unit fits in any bag. You don't even need to worry about drivers, at least if you use Linux.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I did not test the one-touch backup feature. Lack of documentation creates in me a bit of fear if it should work incorrectly. Doesn't matter as I prefer to use my own methods for getting data onto a drive.

1 out of 5 eggsDead Upon Arrival

This review is from: UNITEK HDD/SSD USB 3.0 to SATA & IDE Adapter, on/off switch and 12V/2A Power Adapter

Pros: Great little package with plenty of interfaces.
USB 3.0 a big plus.
Portable.

Cons: Received a defective device. It did not power up.

Other Thoughts: After researching all the units of this type I decided to order this one because, although a little more expensive, I thought it would be worth it to get a better quality unit that would last. Oh well. I guess there is no such thing as 100% quality control anymore. Hopefully the next one will work!?

5 out of 5 eggsEveryone should have one

This review is from: UNITEK HDD/SSD USB 3.0 to SATA & IDE Adapter, on/off switch and 12V/2A Power Adapter

Pros: It worked exactly as expected. I had one new 2TB HDD and one old 120GB HDD that someone gave me. I was able to connect both of them using the adapter. It was as simple as plugging in the USB, the power, and attaching the HDD.
Once that was done I was able to format the HDD's and copy stuff over, all without having to open up my computer before knowing that they work.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Everyone should get one of these. It's really convenient and saves a lot of trouble removing and installing your storage devices. Everyone I know worries about getting new drives that are DOA, so this makes it really easy to check. It was also convenient for me to copy files over from my friend's internal HDD without having to install it.

5 out of 5 eggsNifty device

This review is from: UNITEK HDD/SSD USB 3.0 to SATA & IDE Adapter, on/off switch and 12V/2A Power Adapter

Pros: Pretty nifty. I would have prefered toaster-style, but couldn't find a well-rated one. Each edge of the device supports a different interface, which covers all existing interfaces at this time. Small body fits anywhere for storage, such as my field bag.

Cons: none
