5 out of 5 eggsVersatile Hard Drive to USB 3 Adaptor

Pros: Good Value, Versatile, Fast, Compact

Cons: Needs External Power, Flimsy USB Port, Not a Physical Dock

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a nice, simple (good price considering its functionality) and compact little device that'll allow temporary external connection of up to two internal hard drives to a USB port. It'll run 1 PATA drive (3.5" OR 2.5") and 1 SATA drive simultaneously. It has recognized every drive I've tried so far. Obviously, to get the max throughput you'll need to use USB 3.0 though it is backwards compatible.

This is not a physical docking unit so you have to setup a space that'll allow the drives and adapter to rest in a stable (and static free) position. It has a power switch which is nice as you can get everything connected properly before the drives power up. The overall construction of the unit (especially the USB port) isn't particularly robust but if you're careful everything will work great.

5 out of 5 eggsIDE / SATA Adaptor

Pros: Just the thing I needed to clear some music and files from old IDE drives which were replaced by SATA Mechanical and SSDs

Cons: None that I can find

Other Thoughts: I was wondering when they would invent something like this to make file transfers much easier.

3 out of 5 eggsNeeds Firmware/driver Update

Pros: Works OK in USB 2.0 ports

Cons: Adaptor Power switch must be OFF before plugging into USB port. The turn it on. Works OK in USB 2.0 ports Windows 8.0. Many times fails to start in USB 3.0 port windows 8.0. Error: Eject Unknown USB Device (Set address failed), this is a known windows 8.0 problem. Needs Fix.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Utilitarian Adapter

Pros: Small form factor.
Cables and drivers included.
USB 3.0
Versatile ports for all old and current I/O interfaces.
Power switch.
Convenient one touch power backup button (if you use it for that)
Fantastic Unitek customer service. (thanks John!)
Usual good Newegg replacement service.

Cons: 1st one defective. (s#%t happens!)

Other Thoughts: I have friends with computers ranging in age from new to over 10 years old. So I need a tool that allows me to access old and new drives for retrieval of data as (or before) they die off. My old adapter was still working but was larger and only offered USB 2.0 speeds.
The first Unitek adapter came quickly. I was impressed with the form factor and the fact that it came with all necessary cables and software. Unfortunately, the first unit was defective (no power) and I had to wait for a replacement to complete my review. Fortunately, it was covered by the warranty and Newegg got another one out to me about a week later. What was especially remarkable was Unitek's reaction after contacting them. They indicated correctly that it should be replaced through the Newegg system but made several follow-up calls to make sure I received it and that it was to my satisfaction. I wish all electronics manufacturers offered this kind of customer service. Wow!
After this experience I would not hesitate to purchase another Unitek product.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works great for me.

Pros: It works, and the cost is more than reasonable.

Cons: Short IDE power cable. It could be more sturdy, but I'm certain that if UNITEK built it so, it would cost a good deal more. I don't think the magic copy button placement is ideal, as it is very easy to press it when you don't intend to do so.

Other Thoughts: I thought it wasn't working for (3.5") IDE drives when I first tried to use it. What I found is that it either refuses to recognize the IDE drive, or displays it as having no data if the drive's jumper settings are not in the MASTER (Drive 0) position. I didn't see any mention of this in the scant documentation. I had no issues at all with SATA drives.

HOWEVER, this thing worked great once I got past the jumper setting misunderstanding. ALSO, I sent an email to UNITEK about my problems with IDE drives, and a tech support person actually PHONED me a couple of days later to see if he could help -- now that's some of the best customer service I've ever experienced. [At the time of the call, I had convinced myself that I had already erased the IDE drives that I was having trouble with. I later figured out that the issue was the jumper settings.] I highly recommend this device to anyone who needs its functionality. At this price, you can't lose as long as you treat it gently.
